Rickson Gracie FAQ

not many athelets eat pork. Honestly, have you ever seen an athelete/fighter eating pork? I have seen hundreds of interviews of basketball, football guys and fighters. They usually eat lean beef or chicken.

Anyone know why pork is the only meat banned in the Gracie diet? I know a few of them don't eat any red meat at all, but pork was the only one originally banned. I'm wondering what the reasoning behind it was.
They are devout Muslims...doh!

Ya but what made him decide to ban pork? Most of the world finds it ok, except for Muslims. I'm wondering where he got that idea from.
Did you know that pigs are the animals with the DNA most similar to that of human beings? In fact prior to Recombinant DNA technology Type 1 Diabetics used porcine insulin(which only varied by a few amino acids) to fulfill their insulin needs.

I have read some interesting articles that have stated that eating pork is the closest thing to cannibalism and could be the reason(along with other factors) behind the overwhelming prevalence of autoimmune disorders in pork eating societies.

Mind you there is no concrete evidence to support this claims. It is however an interesting theory.

Why would religions such as Islam and Judaism go so far out of its way to avoid the consumption of pork?

I think Pork and also the combination of meat and cheese take the longest to clear the stomach and therefore aren't good for fighting/surviving lifestyles.

it's basically a their version of food combination diet.. Carlos Gracie didn't event it (even if the gracies think he did)...

Other versions of combining foods/diets have been around for centuries.

No they don't. Carlos learned the diet from an argentinian doctor whose name I can't recall, but it is explicitly stated on his biography that that is where he learned it. It is called the Gracie diet because Carlos was an outspoken advocate of this diet and the whole family followed it while under his wing.

Also as far as I have learned, the combinations are follow the logic that your body expends a considerable amount of energy in digestion, and you should therefore combine meals that require similar or compatible enzymes to break down so as not to exhaust your body or expend unnecessary energy. That is one of the reasons, this one as explained by Rickson himself.

Also the food choices and amounts are very healthy, a focus on fruit, etc.

orly?! I thought it was chimpanzee's at over 98%? Followed by, oh, I don't know, hundreds of other primates? Most of which fall within 3% of the human genome in similarity (whereas the pig is something like 83%.)

We also used bovine insulin and fish insulin. Doesn't have to do with how close those animals are genetically more than how available the actual animals are. Not like we can go round up all the chimpanzee's for their insulin.

Source please.

Oh...nevermind.

Why would religions such as Islam and Judaism go so far out of its way to avoid the consumption of pork?
Because they view the animal (incorrectly by the way) as "unclean", not because they sat down and said, "hmm, this animal is strikingly similar to us genetically!"

1. Humans don't eat chimpanzees. I meant to say the animal consumed by humans with the closest DNA.

2. Bovine insulin had greater incidence rates of brittle diabetes and it is common knowledge that porcine insulin worked best during the pre-Recombinant DNA era.

3. I think its not that far fetched to label them as 'unclean' , they do after all eat their own fetal excrement.

I would love to discuss this further but I feel that we are ruining this excellent thread.

1. Meant to...but didn't. My bad?
2. Yet doesn't change the fact that we used (and still use?) bovine and porcine insulin because they are feed animals and are/were readily available. Your argument was working on the premise that they are "close" to humans with respect to our DNA and that is why we use them. We used them because we had millions of them and it worked.
3. Again, your premise was that they were similar to humans (and that whole bit about cannibalism?) But that's not why Islam and Judaism "shun" them. Their books say they are "unclean." Not "they are kinda like us."

And this thread already has such a high "awesome" factor our little squabble is merely a pebble in a pond.

the whole reason jews and muslims don't eat pork is because of their cloven hooves, they associated that with the devil.

new rickson fact

rickson smokes weed before he rolls according to joe rogan

DK - finally read through he whole thread and I'll add on to the kudos - great job to you and all the people contributing.

Is the Choke DVD out of print? It seems the only ones available are over $100. Can I get a copy of this for a reasonable price?

Any updates on Rickson seminars?

Honestly unless you want to collect it I would simply download it and burn it. One DVD that is definitely worth the purchase is Renzo Gracie Legacy.

The real star of Choke to me is Yuki Nakai, not Rickson. In this documentary, however, it is interesting to see the locker room footage, in which Rickson is extremely focused and somewhat rude or at least curt to his family and trainers, while also allowing us some intimate glimpses of his vanity ( well known Gracie trait).

I've hinted to the wife that I want the Renzo DVD for Father's Day.

I am a collector of music - I love having the original package but I'll sacrifice just to see it.

I've had a friend look all over to download it and burn it - does anyone have a link?

I just finished reading the whole thread. Awesome. Thank you DK for the wonderful information and everyone else for the input.
