Rickson Interview Sensei SPORTv Part 2

(About moving to Rio)

Rickson Gracie is a happy man to be back in Brazil and happy to be working to spread what he loves.

Look , I have no complaints about the US. It is a country that favored the education of my kids, gave me many commercial opportunities, it is a great country. A little bit shaken by this recession but still the center of opportunities. But if you take a coconut tree to california, it doesnt give coconuts. I dont know why. You can do whatever you want, it won't give fruit.

I felt that since I went there I was feeling my energy being drained and when I close my eyes and think of what I want, to eat a papaya, drink coconut water, surf at Prainha, see and feel the energy of my friends, it wasn't there. So I had to make a choice between staying in Rio or going back to taking the freeways, saying " Hi!" to people, living a regular life. Good money, good house but, I don't live for money I live for emotion. I feel I've done a good work in the US, my gym is still there, I've done many seminars, but I'm at a point in my life in which I seek quality of life.

(About surfing)

More than with surfing, my connection is to the ocean, it is an equalizer of energy. If I feel bad I go there and feel well, If I'm too excited I'll go there and calm down. And surfing is a wonderful sport, it keeps me in contact not just with the ocean, but also a connection with.

(When asked if he was black or coral belt)

What belt am I? Some guys out there want to give me brown, but I hesitate, I'm
comfortable at purple.

(About his participation in the Hulk)

Doing the Hulk was a cool experience, I think it's valid. The day we filmed we did a lot of action, takedowns, and in editing they passed the side of breathing and control which is what Hulk needs. For me it was a great deal in my perspective to rescue certain values of martial arts. I'm sure Hollywood goes on, but as far as showing up onscreen, I'd always like to get involved strictly to bring this message of cure and benefits through martial arts, not just ego.

Jose Padilha is a good friend and we are working on a film about MMA. I am in it as a consultant. The idea is to make it as real as possible, show the pressures, difficulties, and some practical aspects like dealing with the mafya in Russia or Japan, what the champions live, many aspects. I will just be a consultant. If I show up onscreen it'll be as a masseuse or something.

(About his age)

Look I don't believe in age, I believe in spirit. I believe the person's body can age, but the mind, it has to transform, and you have to feel that your age doesn't take away any possibilities, but adds to you an experience and the ability to reduce your effort and maximize your output. Imagine if,with 25 years of competition, 460 fights undefeated, imagine if I will give attention to someone who says " you will win this one for sure", if I will place myself in the position to have to win , I will lose everything I ever accomplished. In my first fight I walked in there afraid and respectful. In my last fight I will walk in there afraid and respectful. I always try to relax about the result, the result is not my problem. I always walked in there without any attachment to that. Ready to win, ready to lose and believe it or not, ready to die.

(About fighting again)

For the last few years I've been trying to organize a huge fight for myself, to end my career. Because after 2000 my son passed away and my world was shaken and after everything went back to normal, I decided to make it happen. But never negotiating from a lower position. I won't admit to making less than any other fighter. I won't even admit making as much as any other fighter. I have to make more. And the promoters these days, the competition, meh, it has been quite difficult and probably won't happen. I'm satisfied with the status quo and I don't feel like I have anything to prove. I'm happy, fighting or not, but I'm a warrior and if someone puts money on my hand that pleases me, this possibility is always open. To me, I don't care about winning or losing, I want to put my name on a contract that will bring comfort and security to my family that will add a lot to the rest of my life.

So I'm here waiting for someone crazy enough to pay me what I want (laughter).

Cool.

So, who's going to give him the money to fight? And what type of money would he fight for? He ain't no Money Mayweather haha

This interview is a little over a year old. The answers to your questions are in the FAQ on the first page.

In the movie Choke, Rickson did an exercise for his neck, where he had this huge rubber band with a strap around his forehead, and he would walk away from where the rubber band was based with his head pulling the resistance of the band.

Where can we buy that rubber band? I asked at my local Modell's but they had no idea what I was talking about. The employee there didn't know who Rickson Gracie is either.

Most sport shops should have them if not look on Ebay under resistance bands.

Rickson graduates Caique to the coral belt.

I thought Relson already did that a couple of years ago? I thought I remember him coming over from Hawaii and promoting Fabio in San Diego, then running up the freeway and promoting Caique next?

Rickson is back on his seminars and finally starting his tour of America.

Thanks for this thread, please give as many update/info about up coming seminars as possible. I'd be @ the 1 posted but i have prior commitments both days :icon_sad:

I got to train with Rickson yesterday. It is common to hear that he expresses jiu jitsu in the purest form of all the Gracies. I have to agree...after seeing a room full of ranked jiu jitsu players constantly fail his fundamentals tests, Rickson teaches more of the philosophy and essence and less the technical.

I have also trained with Relson and Rhalan in the past and definitely notice a difference in teaching styles between them.

All of them unbelievable! But Rickson really lets you know where your game is by exposing your weaknesses and poor fundamentals.

can you elaborate the different teaching styles of Relson and Rickson?

Relson taught a bit more towards the technique and gameplan side of finishing the opponent efficiently.

Rickson focused a bit more on basic fundamentals of movement, leverage, and base.

Both really amazing teachers and have no issues with demonstrating the techniques on everyone even in their prime ages.

Once they are warmed up, you can really see the spirit in what they are teaching and it seems like they could go for days! Great teachers...

Gracies, specifically, have a tribal mentality that comes from the fact that they are a clan, bred for and built around jiu jitsu. Make no mistake, Carlos had as many kids as possible, and so did Helio, with the intention of building a strong clan to represent and spread the art they developed.

As they grew up, it was the Gracies versus the world. Nobody knew them or their art. They challenged anyone and everyone. In newspapers, in gym visits, at the beach, it didn't matter.

Those who follow MMA now think of it as a sport and the Gracies, as arrogant douchebags, but you forget that not even 20 years ago MMA as we know it did not exist and they were STILL fighting on backyards or against "masters" of other arts to show their jiu jitsu.

And now that jiu jitsu has been shown, accepted, and is respected, do you really think that they will be humble about it?

Look at what they have done. One fight at a time. One challenge at a time. All of them: Carlson, Rickson, Rolls, Helio, Carlos, Carlos Jr., Relson, Rolker, George..... they all fought for this. And they earned the right to be full of themselves, especially when they put on a gi.

Awesome, awesome post. Thank you! So much to read here, I will take this on in chunks when I have time.
