Rickson Gracie FAQ

Why do you think that is? Does rorian and his son tell there students not to compete?would I be better off going to a place like Hollywood bjj

It only depends on what you want and/or expect of BJJ.

If you feel that it is vital to compete, then join a club that compete.

I want to compete in no-gi thats why i go to 10th planet. But I also want to concentrate on self defense but I thought I could also use what I learn from the Gracie Academy to compete. But now I hear that most people that go to the Gracie Academy don't compete and I wonder why that is or if thats true.

What are Rorian and his sons up that there students hardly ever compete.

self defense BJJ and sport BJJ (competition) are just different.

I think its because some schools train BJJ for different things. Here at my school (BTT) we train for two things. We train sport BJJ, for competitions, and we train BJJ for MMA.

As far as i know, HBJJ trains sport BJJ for comps, and Gracie Academy trains primarily in Self-Defense BJJ, though im sure they have some form of competition training. I dont know how vast or limited it may be, so i cant comment much on it.

I will say, i see a much larger amount of guys from HBJJ competing than Gracie Academy in Torrance. Not to mention, id love to learn from Shawn Williams, hes a stud.

I'm not a 100% but I think he competed in the pan ams and well Ralek fought in Dream, so is the bjj still considered just self defence?

I did not know that he competed in the pan ams.

Fighting MMA is not the same as BJJ sport.

They were. Always had been. Now the family is too big, too fractioned, and now that BJJ has been shown to the world, the mentality of "us against them" is over. The Gracie "clan" is also over, with the death of Helio. Each one is following his own path, opening his own gym. In less than 80 years they manage to start with one man, Carlos, and end with the creation of MMA and popularization of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in every continent.

That time is over. The time of rival gym invasions, challenges between masters, fights on the beach, organizing tournaments, trying to show jiu jitsu to the world, is over. Some would say that is unfortunate.

Roger has been successful in holding the banner of the family champion, even though there are no more challenges. 8 times world champion in his weight category, ADCC champion, and advocate of simple and basic jiu jitsu. A lot is expected of him, as is of Kron. Could they perhaps keep fighting for jiu jitsu?

Who knows, man.

I think it was one of Rickson problem in one of his interviews. The family is spread apart and Gracie family members are training/preparing to fight MMA by themselves. They no longer choose to have family members to represent them.

No Gracies fight in MMA by themselves. Rolles is trained by Renzo. Ralek is trained by Rorion. Roger doesn't need any training, let's be honest, but he does train with Renzo for MMA.

But that train, remember the Gracie train? That's what it was about.

I dont think we will be seeing this anymore. And it sucks.

Do you think Rickson would be better than what he is now if he didn't have all that pressure on him to be so great.

there is a new generation of gracies now. Kron, Kayron, are young black belts, guys like Clark and Ronis are comming up. And lets not forget rhalan

Don't forget Ryron,Rener, and Ralek those guys are awesome

they don't compete, they might as well be retired.

Is there some irony in the fact that the best Gracie right now isn't really a Gracie?
