Retirement

Snowbird in the southern US or maybe an island like Belize or Columbia.

Honestly, it's hard to say what I'll do or where I would want to live since it's realistically about 18-20 years down the road. With that being all I can hope for is for my kids to be doing well in life, meet or exceed my financial goals by retirement, and both my wife and I have excellent health. Hard to say where we would live. Would depend on many factors. Maybe retire in Hawaii, maybe stay in California. Probably not realistic to move to other countries or Hong Kong (where my wife is from). It would be nice to stay close to family (meaning my kids). Both will be in their 20’s by then. We just want to be healthy and wealthy enough to travel the world, live a comfortable life in retirement, be able to give to our children (pay off their college, help them out with downpayment for a home, etc) and pass down whatever we have left.

What's your plans, guys?

I want to move to the middle of nowhere. No phones, no laptops, no nothing.

Would be nice to have an acre of land and a river near by.

Like in 1883!
No sherdog? No thanks

As much as I like the idea of being off the grid and digitally "detoxing," the internet is how I get most of my information now so I still need it. I need to go on youtube to figure out how to plant certain plants, or catch a particular fish, or whatever.

I would very much like to do this. Unfortunately, I don’t have what one would call survival skills. So it really isn’t feasible for me.
But still, I fantasize about moving to a place like Sam Elliot’s character in Did you Hear About the Millers, where it’s secluded but within arm’s reach of a small town in which I can buy food and other necessities.

But I am going to need high speed internet so I can watch movies and play video games. Not having that is a deal breaker.

So I’ll probably just stay in my current house until my wife and I are too old to take care of ourselves at which time we’ll sell it and move into a retirement community. As long as I have enough money for the new XBox or Playstation, and some games, I’ll be fine.

I honestly don't see a point to accumulating wealth and slowly rotting away until almost 70. If I can retire Young and live a modest lifestyle, I'll take it.

Downsizing your lifestyle The closer you are to retirement is probably the best path you can take

You absolutely right but I never said I was planning to retired at 70. Am retiring in Spain at 40. I bought some very cheap 1 bed apartments and am renting out via airbnb. I just need a bit more fix income to have comfortable life. Am 28 so on the right track!

Retired at the age of 39 since 2019. Been training competing in jiu jitsu and spending 30 days on and 30 days off overseas (mainly Colombia since 2021). Except for these past 4 months :( . Been working some security shifts to help my nephew with his lawyer fees/custody battle.

I'm just talking in general. It doesn't seem like people are making any effort at all to retire earlier. They accept it for what it is and spend their money extravagantly on meaningless junk. A lifetime of junk could have bought them retirement.

If you can retire 13 years from now that is badass. How much money do you estimate needing by 40 to live in Spain?

I'll just be happy with a roof over head, a steady source of income, peace and quiet abd my health.

It's the years leading up to it that I'm worried about.

Health is a funny business. My best friend never smoke and he had lung cancer. I know guys with a dodgy liver and have fatty liver disease. So I guess I plan without thinking about health. If I die I die but till then I keep planning my last days.

I agree.

However, my recent blood clot kind of put things into perspective for me.

I'm a big bloke, 265lbs, 6ft3, and I can stand to lose a few pounds. I was always active though, moved fast, went to the gym often.

I had my clot, was bedridden for a week, couldn't stand or even sit upright at all and I have had strength and stamina issues from the end of April, right up until this week, where I finally feel like I have the spring in my step back.

I also want to shed these bloody compression stockings, and I sure as hell don't want to be a regular at St Peters.

If I die, I die, but being crippled is bloody miserable.

I would bike, exercise and swim everyday
Golf
Umpire and/or coach youth baseball
Practice writing
Volunteer work
Travel

CALPERS for me. 11 more years till I can collect.

Plan on selling my house, moving out of state as soon as my kid is 18. Sending a massive “fuck you bitch” balloons to my ex’s work (if you can call it that) when he turns 18 and I don’t have to pay her anymore
