Research Shows "grit" more important than IQ

We can implement affirmative action for height in the NBA. 50% of players on a team need to be 6 feet and under and 25% of them need to be 5.6' and under.

Those seven footers need to check their privilege.
I've seen this analogy so many times and I can't stand it. Height directly affects how well a person can play basketball. This analogy essentially implies that skin color affects how well someone can do a job.

I listen to Dan Carlin's podcast about the Punic war. And he said that the Roman empire was grittier than those other " states " in the ancient world.

The Roman empire was also very successful.

Sports reference: You ever notice that when athletes are talking about their superstar peers - they often say "So and So is the hardest working guy I've ever been around," regardless of the sport? They never say that the best guy on the team is also the laziest (or maybe they do and I've just never heard it).

Cristiano Ronaldo is this years best Footbal ( Soccer ) player of the world.

And he's known for his hard work.

I personally think:

A lot of work + talent = Success.

In basketball, the best players get the jobs.

With affirmitive action, that isn't true. Many of the best players don't get picked because they were born the wrong color and don't contribute to quota filling.

Except that would never happen. Its just another fantastical BS straw man you have to invent to try to defend an indefensible point.

Big difference between a societal construct(wealth distribution) which was invented by society and can be changed easily by society and born genetic differences which cannot.

Im sorry you Liberturdians are too retarded to tell the difference.

And there is no alternate universe where they would ban tall athletes to allow short ones to compete. It only exists in your confused brain.

Yeah, on top of this it also seems like there's anecdotal evidence too.

In the working world, your success is going to depend a lot on WHO you know, maybe even more than WHAT you know. That's based on my anecdotal evidence.

Two takeaways: perseverance is important to success and IQ is not the only thing that determines success. "No shit" to both of those things.

Networking is part of the hard work when looking for a job. There aren't that many people who are born into success but there are a lot of successful people.

#1- Wrong, it's easy to implement a height maximum on a basketball team. Many adult leagues do this to balance the 'fairness' of play regardless of their view on 'genetic' discrimination.

#2 - Wrong, genetic differences can be changed through eugenic programs to make things 'equal' for everyone, or simply by enforcing mandates and quotas. This was a keen leftist view until Hitler ousted the people thinking this way.

#3 - Not necessarily true, the UFC has a maximum weight class in which logic, which is a racist white construct to those that attended the latest cult seminar, would suggest they could categorize people into height classes as well. It wouldn't be that hard. All you'd have to do is measure people with a long ruler and I bet even Sohei could do it.

Has the WR stock gone down? How is is that Sohei is the anti-theses of logic in this thread?

The best MMA fighter of the past Fedor has grit and talent. He even keeps attacking when he is on his back.

The best MMA fighter of this moment Jon Jones has also grit and talent. He showed his grit in his fight against Alexander Gustafsson. He kept attacking even in the later rounds against a very difficult opponent.

In the last UFC there was a great fight between Erick Silva ( talent ) vs Matt Brown ( grit ). And Matt Brown won, because he was grittier.

When I was 9 I firmly believed that any kid in the world, if he trained hard enough and wanted it bad enough, could become an elite, professional athlete.

Then I grew up.

People need talent and hard work to be successful.

So people ofcourse also need talent.

So I think that people need to find their talent/passion and than work hard on it to be successful.

This is the equivalent of a fighter saying they had the best camp of their career on the UFC preshow and saying they are in the best shape of their career only to get demolished by an overall better fighter. Nobody wants to attribute success to winning the sperm derby.

But height directly affects ability to play basketball, skin color does not affect ability to do a job.

There is alot of wasted talent in the world. Talent alone is not enough to become very successful.

It's nature ( talent ) and nurture ( hard work etc ).

Nature and nurture are both very important to be successful.

Well, if having "grit" makes you "all that" *AND* a super-size order of fries, then explain how Rooster Cogburn ended up being a washed-up alcoholic lawman.

Explain IT!!!

*I'M WAAAAAAAITINNNNG!* HELL-OOOOOOO, PEOPLE!!

Okay...got that outta my system...now then, lemme see if I've got my around this concept:

According to this woman's compelling, groundbreaking research, there now a strong argument to be made that a person of relatively common/average intelligence who works hard, focuses their energies in a productive manner, and who most often rises to the challenges, tribulations, and setbacks that beset us all now and then has a greater shot at prosperity and fulfillment then some genius who spends his time with his thumb up his butt when he's not off folding like a wet paper bag and quitting at everything?

Wow...this should spaRk major controversies.

No... Affirmative action implies that.

I'm pretty sure that basketball is a societal construct. So, why can't or shouldn't the rules be changed again?

17 minutes of your life well spent. One of my favorite Ted talks ever... coming from someone who is successful career wise. Hits the nail on the head around "meritocracy".

Thanks CEROVFC.

That TED talk was very interesting. It also talks about people seeing themselves as losers and about envy. It remindes me of the qoute of Mises.

"What pushes the masses into the camp of socialism is, even more than the illusion that socialism will make them richer, the expectation that it will curb all those who are better than they themselves are. . . . " - Ludwig von Mises ( The Ultimate Foundation of Economic Science p. 123 )
