Remember when frank mir said heavyweight sucks?

He’s not wrong. There’s a reason the same 7 guys have been in the top 10 for what feels like eternity.

It's no coincidence that there's a correlation between the average age of the top ten increasing and the amount of turnovers decreasing; the oldest average age in the division's history (36) just so happened to be the year that had the least amount of turnovers (0) back in 2017.
In that thread I defined turnovers as:
(fighters who made the top ten who weren't in it the previous year).
The Heavyweight division has been declining since 2011.

You must be obese, don't worry you can't beat any of the lighter fighters they would turn you into hamburger meat. You like to associate your fatness with you being able to fight I know.
Yeah a lot of guys that have fought at 185 have actually finished some of the best Heavyweights out there, then you have to consider the fact the last 2 champs in the division are nowhere even close to the weight limit. Both Stipe and DC were in the 230's. There are some people on here that actually think they could beat guys like DJ just because they are obese.

Still worth watching, the chance of a KO is always looming when heavyweights fight.

Why are people expecting the same handspeed and agility and so on from people weighing 250 pounds? It's like expecting the same punching power from someone weighing 145 pounds.

It's a different breed of fighters and a different way of fighting.
No, we're expecting a basic grasp of fundamentals and respectable physical conditioning, which 99% of MMA HWs can't seem to display. It's a shallow enough division already since there's a small number of people that big, but made even worse by the fact that the best HW athletes are playing other sports.
Early/Mid 2000s HW was stacked with talent. Some of the best wrestlers, strikers and grapplers of ALL TIME in MMA. Olympic wrestlers, world champion BJJ artists & kickboxers
They only seemed good because they were competing against other jobbers.

“Heavyweights suck, the majority of us,” he continued. “We’re just not very good fighters. They’re like watching polar bears fighting over some food. Balance isn’t great. No one knows how to do submissions barely. Once you get out of the top ten, you’re really scratching the bottom of the barrel.”

I mean he's not wrong, heavyweight has always been the weakest and least skilled division out there.
Look at HW now. Overeem #5, Dos Santos #10 and Arlovski #15. Overeem is over the hill, and Dos Santos and Arlovski are both shells of a fighter. Mir isn't wrong.

It's crazy because it's kinda true.. HW not too exciting or desirable to watch right now.. But in Pride, you couldn't miss any HW fight. so I guess that means Pride HW > UFC HW Hahahah Bring it on!

Watching big dudes throw big fists has a certain appeal I can't lie :)

Yet every "skilled fighter" from Welterweight to Lightheavyweight cuts weight to avoid that division like the plague.... Yeah, that makes sense.

I think he was just talking about the lack of real HW athletes...hes basically saying after the top guys you start seeing more and more fattys and guys who are HW out of lack discipline or not wanting to diet to other weight classes..also frank is a pretty funny guy this him.kidding around too...but hes not wrong that HW would benefit from some better athletes or atleast people taking it more seriously im personally tired of seeing the whale couch bodies weve seen recently compete...

Alot has to do with the nature of HW fighting too...when anyone can drop anyone at anytime like HWs can the other skills of MMA sometimes get forgotten or some fighters/coaches focus on that side of the game instead of actually becoming better martial artists...kinda like being K.O hungry so u dont wrestle as much or jiujitsu...cuz ur banking on just clipping the guy...but this is not a good plan in the long run cuz eventually ull run into a Stipe or D.C or other tops guys who are well rounded

It's why most of you are wishy washy fans. I love the heavy fights. We should watch all fights ege. Amongst street trash. You aren't a worldstar fight fan

I mean yeah. Looking at this. The women seem to have a couple more notable names to their roster. We'll see more impressive women with time. No one cares about WMMA but they care even less about every other women's sport. I don't see why bigger guys would pick MMA paywise, unless they have a hardcore wrestling background.

Edit: I said notable by the way, not more skillful.

Two things:

1) As has been mentioned, if any of the guys from 170 or up want to fight at heavyweight, they're welcome to. SIze and strength are real things. Guys cut massive amounts of weight for a reason.

2) Elite athletes who would be in the pool for MMA heavyweight are often lured into other sports. There are other opportunities. Even guys like Hardy who are freak athletes usually only come into MMA past their prime or because they got into trouble in other sports. Guys like Mighty Mouse and Cejudo are limited to sports with weight classes (MMA/wrestling/boxing), gymnastics or horse racing.

The only division where you can have D-level athletes from other sports come in with their inhalers and combine a winning record

Mir himself is a good example. Had goofy striking, non-existent TDD, but was able to snap bones pretty easily.

There's a difference between having good striking technique and having the ability to maim someone.

Well, he's not wrong. Outside of the top 10 you have plenty of HWs that gas, are sloppy, and do nothing for 3 rounds. The kind of guys that can make HW and be athletic and skilled are already in limited supply, and on top of that the best of them go to other sports or arrive to MMA late. Maybe Dana should implement a UFC combine in order to be authorized to fight at HW lol.

At the top there is the interest of knowing who the baddest mofo on the planet is, that's the division's selling point. I'd watch Ngannou murk fools all day, skilled or not. By the way, two polar bears fighting over a piece of meat sounds like an amazing PPV main event, would watch.

100% agree with Mir here.

It is generally recognized that a big benefit of PEDs is getting in more quality training time due faster recovery, ability to go longer. Now apply this logic to HWs, whose athletic output is a fraction of say, a LWs.

And yet even a fringe TOP 10 HW can turn the rest of the roster MW and below into burger meat. I rather watch two unskilled polar bears fight than turbo manlets or WMMA.
You'd rather watch two unskilled fighters fight than smaller, skilled fighters. I guess you appreciate different things in "fighting" than virtually every fan I know.

then why do you watch MMA you fucking dolt. You can go see two unskilled polar bears go at it any time at the local bar.

I could have said you can see two unskilled polar bears go at it when you get home to your wife, but I have restraint.
