Germany put a lot of effort and money into their renewable energy programs, but they are still buying energy (generated by nuclear power plants) from France. Changing to electric vehicles creates a huge power deficit that can hardly be dealt with using renewable energies generated from today’s technology. Totally not saying this isn’t a goal one should strive for, but it’s fantasy for now.A measure like this would put the American capitalist machine into full gear.
The reward would be the US would be global leaders in renewable technology probably - you know, the shit we are currently buying from China, that much of the world will soon be on. Arguably more reward than the pissing contest of putting a man on the moon - which of course resulted in tons of technical development that benefited us all, but an equal incentive to develop renewable energy would do the same plus the direct application.
I think hybrid cars are the way to go in the next decade to reduce emissions. In parallel the state should raise awareness for renewable energies and push the respective programs. (Or say fuck it and build more nuclear power plants to supply electric cars, j/k.)
