Question regarding belts in BJJ...

If they kept training, the person who started this thread could well be a purple by now or even a brown, let alone a blue.

In my experience, a blue can take anywhere from six months up to three years. Different schools have different standards, but competition tends to even everything out (which is one of the big advantages of a martial art that values competition, and is why things like Gracie University worry me, even though I'm not a competitor myself). The average, with regular, consistent training (let's say three times a week), is about a year.

Speaking personally, I started BJJ at the end of October 2006. I got my blue belt in February 2008, after 131.5 hours of training, normally showing up to class twice a week on average. I got my purple belt in March 2011, after a further 371.5 hours, again normally just training twice a week.
