Q&A on Thailand

why do so many of you americans head to tiger.
they must be promoting themselves well in your country.
is it the mma factor cause i wouldn't piss on that camp if it was on fire

Most choose it cause they are afraid of the great unknown and are dying to be around what they consider normal. So a gym with other Americans creates this cohesion for them. Most of those guys will not set foot in the camps in Isaan or Krung Thep because they are ready for that manner of training. Also, when you google, "muay thai training in thailand" the first 2 websites listed are Tiger and Rawai. Then the wood-be muaythai practitioner goes on to those forums and reads what is being said and they think that the training is good cause someone just like them said it was.

The thing that sets Tiger apart from Rawai is the MMA factor. They have guys like Mike Swick and John Fitch going there and doing seminars and they get drawn in by the hype machine. Most Americans are gullible and conditioned very well from TV so accepting bullshit is the norm and they don't even know it. Kind of like how people here stand in line for the latest pair of Michael Jordan shoes at 5am in front of the mall. The only reason why they is to be cool, not cause the shoe will do anything for them besides get them some young high school pussy. The same goes for choosing a muaythai gym, they don't choose it base on what the gym will do for them, they see other people, mainly UFC fighters there and they take the cake. Then they come back and really haven't learned shit other than how to bad mouth someone in Thai.

we hear about alot of pro mma fighters going there to sharpen their muay thai

And they don't sharpen their skills. That's the funniest thing. The only way to get good at something is to do it consistently. The I'm doing muaythai for an hour then gonna go roll with Ray Elbe is not how you improve your muaythai.

Rawai is very active in at the stadiums in Phuket and for those who don't mind fighting a cab driver by day and a fighter at night go for it. I saw at least four fights that were what I would consider rigged. I don't blame some of the Thais for fighting for an easy pay check but the foreigners that fight these individuals at Patong and Bangla stadiums think that are big shit after they win.

They training at Rawai is great for those who don't really have a clue about muaythai and want brag to the buddies back home that they trained in the "tropics" with Namsaknoi as it states on their website. You have to go there and experience Rawai for yourself. Once you've had some good training, you know what to look for and what to stay away from. My experience was this; It was my third day there and 3 Swedish chicks showed up and were scoping the place out. All the trainer forgot what they were there for and started trying to put on a clinic and students that were on pads. I just happened to be one of them. The trainers name that I was working with name is Fhad. He tried to come at me more intensely since it appeared that they were watching us in the ring. He tagged me with the pads a couple times as if I did something wrong so when he stepped in again I Teeped in his chest and off of his feet. Some of the other trainers saw that and they immediately came over to me and another trainer named Bangman got in the ring. He not try to hurt be but I could see that he was not pleased with what I had done. As soon as I finished my rounds with Bangman, he offered me a fight at Bangla. From that point on, Fhad was looking at me dirty.

Another thing that pissed me off is they don't protect their fighters. The same day I had my incident, my friend Dani from Spain had had a match at Bangla. I remember seeing that funny red truck driving around the Nai Harn, Rawai and Phromthep Cape areas announcing the fights that were scheduled in Patong. Dani was supposed to fight a guy that had 7 fights with 4 losses. Instead, his opponent is changed at the last minute and he gets outclassed badly! KTFO in 1:39 of rd 1. Dani had a few kickboxing matches back in Spain but after the fight, we got news that his new opponent had upwards of 75 fights!!! Now, if you are a trainer at a gym and a local guy has that many fights, whether they are wins or losses, you should know who he is and tell your fighter that he shouldn't take the match instead of letting him get thrashed.

On a side note, I think Namsaknoi is only there for the easy money he makes from students doing privates. It's a great hustle and it's too easy.

so you dont like rawai because 1. fhad who probally weighs 115 pounds was hitting you hard with the pads . you missed his belly pad and teep him in the chest and he went down so bangman jumped in the ring with you and you put on such a good display on the pads he offered you a fight??? since when did bangman offer people fight because last 4 times i have been there its always up to tuk.

and reason 2. your friend not you got beat in a fight . but how is that possible because i thought all the fights were fought by taxi drivers according to you . i know for a fact i fought three thai 1 at patong stadium and 2 at bangla not one was a taxi driver . the last thai guy i fought was 6'4 195 pounds and beat my ass every round . so you can cut it out with saying the fighters they put against the farangs (not falangs)are all taxi drivers

and as for your friend dani the loss should help him in his future fights on what works and what does not. always keep your hands up

and how do you know what namsaknoi is there for did you talk to him ???
and if he is there for the money and i think he is like every other trainer who teaches muay thai because thats what you pay them for you dont think there going to do it for free. wouldnt you want to train with him?

and how many times have you fought in thailand ??

anyone trained at suwit? reviews ive read seem to be very good they also promote there own fights so im guessing even wth ittle prior experience it would be possible to get a fight while there.
im looking at going for a couple of months is the training good?
also is there any point in going to thailand for a couple of months then coming back to shitty training here in new zealand will the superior technique i learn tere stick with me or six months down the line will i be no different than had i not gone there?

where you coming from? Where are you gonna train? I'm gettin there on October 3rd and I think I'm gonna train at WMC in Koh Samui.

I'm starting at Siam no1 in Sankampaeng i'll be there probably till the end of november. Not sure where i'm going after that.

I think alot of people go for the mma. the funny thing is i know someone who went there and said their grappling is a waste of time and just trained thai the whole time.

People go to Tiger because it's very accessible. They have a nice website that's easy to find and navigate, and they make it very easy for anyone interested in training to make it out there and stay and train. It's the same reason people go to Rawai. They're the top two search results in Google. This all seems pretty obvious.

I'm torn between Patong boxing and Sinbi at the moment.

I want to spar alot, I want to have some fights and I want as much advice on my technique as possible rather than just holding the pads and letting me get a work out. Any suggestions on which I should choose?

I can't speak for Patong as I haven't been there, but you'll get those things at Sinbi if you're dedicated. There's sparring every day during both sessions, as well. And I always suggest private lessons as a way to really get the most input into your technique.

I'm very open to suggestions. If you think its a bad camp then would you be able to suggest one that's a better idea?

Don't know if it was up to TUK or not and I don't care. He was a trainer so that's all I know.

I did not say that all fights were rigged but I did see some that were. It is also comical that you claim to have a fought a Thai that is 6'4 and 195. That is almost unheard of unless you fought Ganyao from Fairtex San Francisco. :) Also, don't try to correct me on Thai language you damn fool. Falang and Farang are the same word! Isaan people say Falang cause there is not R-round in their language. Just like how Thai people ROTE DAENG which means "red car" and Isaan people say LOTE DAENG.

You can make that claim but he should not have been in their in the first place with someone who has that much experience. That like your stupid jumping in the ring with Ernesto Hoost. You'd get dismantled with ease just off of the experience factor. Nothing you would do could really bother him cause you are still an upstart.

I'm not knocking Namsamno at all. Deserves it but I'm sure he is there for the easy money.

I have 5 fights in Thailand. You?

Tiger may very well be the best place for you. What kind of training are you looking for? Do you want to fight? If so, do you really want to be tested in that match? Are you just looking for a muaythai holiday? If so, that's cool too. Light training mixed with sight seeing and crazy nights in Patong are good times. It all depends on what you want.

I don't think I'd get enough experience to fight this time around. First and foremost, I want quality training, everything else is secondary. But I know I can't just go to any camp as a beginner and expect to be able to keep up.

so dont go to rawai because they either match you up with a cab driver or a vet with over 100 fights. ok

dont go to rawai because its one of the first websites you find when you search "training in thailand". so if im hardcore.... rawai isnt for me. ok

and dont train at rawai because namsaknoi is only out to hustle me.... growing up.... we always heard this saying "the game is to be sold... not to be told". do your trainers give you free pt's? do they let you stay at the gym for free? because obviously namsaknoi is just out to get over on me and everyone else.... who's the person you train with that gives you free pt's or do you trainers charge for pt's too? ahhahah. i'll be damned if i spent most of my life learning an art and to not make money off of it when i retire.... smart... very smart.

one thing that i learned at my current gym.... is to never kick dirt on another name. have a good day. and if you dont mind... you wanna post those videos of your fights?

Well you might want to check out Kaewsamrit. There was a fella that I trained with over the summer that had never trained Muay Thai in his life. The trainers were extremely helpful with him...It was a bit ridiculous at how much attention he got from all the trainers, lol. Hell even Anuwat coached him several times on how to throw one's and two's.

On being able to keep up, the trainers are very good at gauging what level you're at and they go at your pace. I remember the first week I was there I gassed very badly when doing the pads and they would end it after the 2nd or 3rd round. But as I got accustomed to the training they would usually do 5-6 rounds of pads with me later. How hard you want to train is basically up to you, but you will get a lot more help if you take training seriously.

Try not to come during the busy season, there can be a lot of people training and you won't get as much attention.

Thanks, reading through fightpassport, I heard patong has an open gym but whenever you come in your trainer will come work with you on the things you would like to improve. That sounds awsome, however it sounds too awsome to be true. Can anyone verify it?
