I think that most food related illnesses probably occurr as a result of two sources. Food being undercooked if it requires cooking or uncooked food being exposed to contaminated water. I know not to drink tap water because, I believe that it can contain bacteria, viruses, and even chemical contaminents. What about ice in drinks? While doing some research on the TAT website, they said, that most restaurants are supplied with ice that comes from nationally inspected ice plants. Is that true or should I just settle for refrigerated drinks.

Also, what about freshly washed green salads? Tap water or is it washed in bottled water? Because, if it is tap water the bacteria or contaminants have just snuck by and into your system.

I have done some research and preparation and am not concerned about getting sick from the food. If anything the fresh, non processed food will probably be the only shock to my system :icon_lol:. However, can someone answer the ice and green salads question. My destinations are Bangkok and Pattaya. Thanks for all the help.

I have not had a stomach problem yet this year in Thailand, and I am eating everything from street vendors to market food.

I drink one of the little yogurt drinks from 7/11 everyday. I think that helps.

ECS123, I think you got to worry more about dirt and bacteial that comes from hands touching money then food, and the numerous insects crawling around in thailand than bacteria surviving in clear water.

Once, there was a cockroach in my pad thai. How does that sound

Sadly -- at least for me at the moment -- this is true. I'm down here with a farang right now (just a friend -- a student of mine) and the difference between this trip and previous trips is night and day. Of course that doesn't mean I can't check out everything that walks by.

That's not too bad, im here with a farang friend who trains at the same gym back at home. I look a lot like a Thai (im viet), I'm pretty sure people think i'm his Thai gay boy. :icon_neut

what do you mean except Japan??

meaning that most hotels in Japan are more on the expensive side and that $150 is actually mid-range so it would not be that bad. I think the cheapest hotel I have stayed at in Japan was around 99$.

Hanging out in Pattaya with your girlfriend? Yikes.

I actually had a girlfriend (fitness/pilates instructor) from BKK from 2006 to 2008 and I took her to Pattaya a couple times. It was OK and we had a good time at the beach.

There is no beaches in BKK and Phucket to far away (to drive).

God i hope i don't get hassled for sexual services, especially since i'm bringing the girlfriend.....

Maybe i should leave her behind and spread my seed a bit, lol? Just a thought.

*turns head around to check if she sees me typing this*

You will not get approached but you will get eyeballed like crazy. On Walking street and when entering disco clubs my ass got grabbed a few times by random girls even when I was holding hands with my girlfriend.

Walking around and see super hot girls looking at you is not fun when you know you can't do anything about it :( It was rough sometimes.

Ill be heading to Thailand for probably the last week of November and the first week of December, if anyone is also about that time. Gotta figure out where to head but was probably guna stay in Bangkok... Open to ideas tho! :)

Cheers:icon_chee

What do you do for food over there? If I go the room I'll be staying in only has a mini fridge. WOuld you suggest you just eating out? Anyone got any suggestions for foods I can eat from the fridge?

Edit: Also what would you suggest as the best way to get around busses or mopeds?

I just go to the nearby stand restaurant and eat there, cheap and havent got sick from it.

Where are you staying? Chances are no matter where you stay that there'll be plenty of stands, restaurants and carts. Even the locals eat out often, so you'll have no problem locating cheap, delicious food. It's much, much better than anything that's going to come out of your mini fridge.

As for the transportation issue, that one really depends on where you're staying. If you're in Bangkok, forget about a moped. The BTS is easy to navigate and there's a sea of cabs. If you're in Phuket, it's a lot more difficult to locate a cab and forget about catching a bus (unless you're in Phuket Town or something). Rent a moped (pretty much anyone will rent you one) and wear a helmet. Not only do thousands of people die a year in motorbike accidents down here, but the cops have been especially active down here recently. I'm a hypocrite, but I never wear my helmet, and I just got popped last week for the first time ever for not wearing a helmet. I don't have a Thai driver's license either, but I only got ticketed for the helmet. 500 baht. Not a huge deal, but still annoying.

use the taxi mopeds, get through traffic fast.

for those interested, there is a place in pratunam that opened about a year ago.
has 160 woman to chose from.
take 5 if you want, great cardio workout.
