@Stargazer Rex Man, part 4 was so much darker than I remembered. Lots of brutal practical effects kills and it felt like his highest body count. He mowed through every single character <lmao>

I've always thought all those movies were very dark. It showed how a man can do earthly evil (raping kids) and then getting dark power and allowed free reign to continue doing it. Man turning into a demon which is all too real.

Yeah there's some really dark shit in part 3 where you see the little skeletons in his furnace and then in the same dream a little girl says "this is where he takes us.." showing the main girl the boiler room. Really makes it sink in. I think people forget what a disgusting character he is because of the funny one liners and being such a horror culture icon.

And I wouldn't be surprised one bit if that was intentionally done. He wasn't like that in the first movie and it did pretty well. Could have kept him like that.

Don't doubt it. Wes Craven only wrote and directed the first movie with a few rewriters on the 3rd script. He was largely only a ceremonial producer for all the sequels. So it was all the studio just trying to created a character to cash in on every October for a few years. They cranked out 4 movies in 5 years lol. He didnt fully write and direct another one until New Nightmare in which Freddy is not funny at all.

Kind of interesting how they did that. It's always funny when I see someone love Freddy Krueger so much and I'm just thinking, "You know he raped and murdered very young children right?". But I get it. I don't think the average horror fan is thinking that deep or has ever had an experience with demonic forces so it's whatever. We all gotta see some shit for ourselves sometimes to understand I guess.

IIRC that was actually a complaint people had about the atempted new one they did. He was not funny, and folks didn't like it.

Yeah it went dark again. It was an uphill battle from the start. You just can't do a remake where the villain is such a character closely associated with an actor. Michael Myers will always be Michael Myers regardless of who's under the mask but Freddy is Robert Englund, period.

The story works better dark but they already programed everyone to like a funny demon. Plus, yeah Robert Englund.
