PWD PWD 1141: You Serious, Clark?

My #1 main complaint is that the film really failed to convey just how huge the Von Erichs and WCCW was at their peak, these dudes were legitimate rock stars that were on top of the world and you just dont get that in the movie, you never get a sense of the magnitude of shock and heartbreak these deaths caused on the people of Texas because it seems like nothing more than a podunk small time operation when it was oh so much more than that
I'm glad A24 made the film but have to wonder if a bigger budget could have captured that magnitude more. Only showing Kerry backstage at Texas Stadium then Doris watching footage of the real match with Flair at home felt like classic "we dont have the budget" storytelling. Same with the funeral scenes with only a few people.

The relegation of Kerry to such a side character was my biggest issue. I get that the movie is about Kevin but if you had no knowledge off them, just off the movie, you would walk away with Kevin was the star and Kerry was just happy to be there. There's only one minor line about houses being down since Kerry left and they do talk about him being in the WWF, which surprised me.

Fritz telling Kerry in that scene that the IC Belt is the second most important belt in wrestling "now that your brother has ruined our promotion" and Kevin's "WTF" shrug in the background got a pop <Lmaoo>

Oh, please, Rex. Rumor and innuendo was Fritz was getting the boys call girls when they were still in high school and they were in Vegas for a TV convention!

That looks amazing, I need me two of them apple fritters and a few of them fruit tarts!

If Im out that way Im hitting up Als Donuts on Lone Tree, love that place, cant pass it up

You should go check out that little hole in the wall panaderia in Bay Point that I love so much, see if it compares to down there, plus its in a southsider neighborhood so you'll feel right at home😒

@RollSonnenRoll what did your sister think about the movie?

@Stargazer Rex how bout your wife, did she get into the emotional rollercoaster?

Did your sons watch it, was it too slow for them?
She thought it was really depressing and was amazed that it all happened. We were both cringing in our seats as Mike downed the pills. She said it was really good though. She was very impressed with the complex portrayal of masculinity and how pro wrestling is a lot deeper than she thought when it comes to that

@Pliny Pete that above conversation lead me down the rabbit hole of explaining why Naitch is GOAT because he could make everyone in the Sportatorium think that Kevin was going to beat him, beat the hell out of him for 45 minutes and then cheat and escape with his NWA title! Then everybody would come back and buy a ticket next time cause "Kevin was gonna get him this time!"

She also found it interesting how Flair was sort of this effeminate diva type guy and how going against the blue collar Texas boys was an interesting dynamic and that got me all about Gorgeous George, Adrian Adonis/Street, Goldust and the rich history in This Business of riling up rednecks with effeminate men. I knew I'd get going!

If I had someone with me I'd a been doing the same thing, prolly why I always end up going alone lol

I also really liked how Kevin wouldn't expose The Business to Pam on their first date. That would have pulled me right out of the movie, a wrestler in 1980 would never do that! "There's nothing fake about what I do....."

This picture is wild, all those people crammed onto the field during baseball season, no way you could do that now days
Oakland Coliseum looked a lot different before they built that ugly ass Mt Davis on top of it

Damn, I miss walking those concrete hallways, just looking at that picture is bringing me back to those crowded concourses and that unmatched sense of childlike excitement I'd get everytime I walked through the entrance gap and looked out onto that field
Memories...
