Purple is the new blue.

Are you bma_mat, I have never seen a purple ever been subbed by a white belt before. The purple is either not legit or the white belt has a background in something like judo or wrestling. Even if they have a background in those arts, its still going to be a challenge.

Oh yeah, theres also the possibility that the purple belt gave you the submission because they can't be arsed expending energy on a white belt when they could be using it against the next more worthy sparring partner.

There are white belts catching higher belts (blue, purple, brown, black) every day, and it's not always because the higher belt doesn't want to expend energy. Sure the frequency drops the more seriously the higher belt takes the session, but get real. I'm not a white belt anymore, but put me in enough matches with somebody and I will eventually catch them. It shouldn't mean much to either person.

"If you're not tapping you're not really training." - this is a motto I follow, and I've seen more than a few grapplers that appear to follow it as well. This means we put ourselves in more positions at the limit of our abilities and will eventually misjudge and get caught.

Theres a difference between a person putting themselves in a bad position to see if they can get out of it and doing a full on, general spar.

Yes, its possible that if some of the really talented higher belts are exhausted or allowed me to put them in bad positions I could possibly tap them.

I can understand that a white may tap a blue, a blue may tap a purple, a purple tap a brown etc, but thats totally different to a white belt tapping a purple belt. The only time I have ever seen anything like that is when there is a large weight, height, cardio difference or if the white belt has an awesome open guard.

I have been a purple belt for quite a while and got subbed by a white belt this week. I tried a fancy choke and missed, he passed to side control and when I turned in he went to knee on belly and far side armbar, got the tap via wristlock. I dd choke him silly like three times before that though.

(The Caveat is that he is 6'2" 220 and is a cop, I am a grad student who smokes too much pot and I'm barely 5'6" 145 soaking wet, but hey a tap is a tap)

Ok, I concede, a white belt can tap a purple belt.

I don't think I have ever sparred anyone with a 75 pound weight and 8 inch height difference. Im guessing by being on the SWAT team, you would have to keep your cardio up high.

That knee on belly must of hurt.

Actually thats not totally true, when I was doing judo a guy I was sparring was around that much different to me. He kind of looked like Quiton Jackson and funny but in a more educated way, I got him in an armbar and he stood up, lifted me from the floor and shook me off. He told me that once he has stood up, then I have to let go.

I did randori with him and he just threw me at will. Well he was a long time black belt and I was a white belt in bjj and judo.

Yea I agree purple is the new blue. Blue is alot easier to attain now a days in some schools. A friend told me at his school they get awarded by attendance as well. But because of the popularity of BJJ, it makes sense there would be so many blues. People are staying with it longer which is great. Our blues have been blue for about 2 going on 3 yrs now. So in our gym it's a much greater accomplishment to reach purple.
