Considering PS4 games now a days are a mixture of low/medium 1080p with a 30FPS cap the 7850 might be able to keep up with it to be honest or at least be competitve. My parents PC is still rocking a RX460 which is probably 10% faster than a 7850 and there playing even modern titles on mostly medium settings 1080p

Old equivalent hardware can probably keep up it's just 95% of PC users will upgrade the moment they can't get a consistent 60FPS or the moment they have to start dropping settings down to medium.

This happened to me last generation as well. The first 4-5 years of last gen I had a third party 8600GT which wasn't much faster than the Xbox 360s GPU and I was able to keep up even with optimization/game engines being a complete mess that gen
I'm aware of the settings discrepancy, but keep in mind the CPU in the original PS4 isn't even an FX-8300 equivalent (the RAM is what soars-- both in terms of speed and volume). I think they're still getting more out of the consoles with all the time they spend on dynamic resolution scaling, and every other technique to squeeze water from a stone, than PC analogues can hope to achieve.

An FX-8300 + Radeon HD 7850 2GB + 8GB DDR3-RAM desktop is not going to run any game that looks as good as Red Dead Redemption 2 on the original PS4.

An R9 380 is the minimum required AMD GPU to run Shadow of the Tomb Raider, for example, and we all know how well minimums plays out in reality. That card is a whopping 65% more powerful than the 7850. So, IMO, only affording the PC analogue a 30% processing power advantage in the long term is short-changing the consoles if it's erring.

R9 380 minimum would literally be impossible. That would mean basically every single new card under $150 can't run modern games (RX 460/550/560, GTX 1050 no Ti).

You must of misread the box, the minimum for that game (shadow of tomb raider) is only a 7770 which is even slower than the Xbox one gpu and even slightly slower than the previous generation 6850. R8 380 would easily get high settings on shadows. 7850 I've seen videos of people sneaking mostly medium which I doubt the PS4 in 2018 is doing better.

For red dead 2 I'll try to run it on my parents desktop just to see when it comes out. There stock rx460 isn't much faster than the 7850

Agreed. I don't mind the 30% buffer in terms of FLOP power afforded to the analogue build, since despite pure horsepower the 7850 obviously can't keep up with the PS4 in 2019, but the R7-3700X definitely appears to be overkill affording well above a 30% increase in FLOP power. After all, that's an 8-core CPU that turbos on all cores to at least 3.9GHz. I'll wait until we see figures on FLOPs and all that before I scruple anything more closely, but I'm impressed by the clocks on both the CPU and GPU.

I knew that "10 year roadmap" was bullshit in 2013. Called that. Hell, not only could they not stick to 10 years, as pitifully underpowered as the PS4 and Xbox One were, but they couldn't even make it to 5 years before they had to release an upgrade revision with the Pro and X units.

Everyone knew the 10 year road map was bullshit. You thumping your chest acting like you know everything is laughable.

Some did, many didn't make that clear. I was on record in those old threads saying so, and if I dug through I could produce that.

I find it more laughable when those with the advantage of 20/20 hindsight insist they were right there with me when they probably were too timid to forward any such opinion at the time.

"Big Navi" could be on its way next year, its just passed its RRA certification in South Korea which is the first step in the process of getting a product to market after development in the country.

The controller (which history suggests will one day be called the DualShock 5, though Cerny just says "it doesn't have a name yet") does have some features Cerny's more interested in acknowledging. One is "adaptive triggers" that can offer varying levels of resistance to make shooting a bow and arrow feel like the real thing—the tension increasing as you pull the arrow back—or make a machine gun feel far different from a shotgun. It also boasts haptic feedback far more capable than the rumble motor console gamers are used to, with highly programmable voice-coil actuators located in the left and right grips of the controller.

Combined with an improved speaker on the controller, the haptics can enable some astonishing effects. First, I play through a series of short demos, courtesy of the same Japan Studio team that designed PlayStation VR's Astro Bot Rescue Mission. In the most impressive, I ran a character through a platform level featuring a number of different surfaces, all of which gave distinct—and surprisingly immersive—tactile experiences. Sand felt slow and sloggy; mud felt slow and soggy. On ice, a high-frequency response made the thumbsticks really feel like my character was gliding. Jumping into a pool, I got a sense of the resistance of the water; on a wooden bridge, a bouncy sensation.

Also revealed over the weekend was a patent registered in Brazil from Sony for a new cartridge but unsure what its for so far:

How can AMD work with both consoles at the same time? Of course it would be just two separate teams, but I don't see the point in MS and Sony having the exact same supplier. Again, the consoles will be virtually identical.
 
Relieved they’re getting rid of the light bar on the DS5. Should greatly improve battery life.

Not having the ability to turn it off was always a head scratcher. Felt like hubris and they just didn’t want to admit it was a pointless feature no one cared about.

Yep and this is a good thing. Will make it easier for devs to cater to both sides.

100% agreed. Reminds me of MS refusing to remove the Kinect from the bundle until they finally were forced to. Except in MS's case it was costing them a lot more money. Sony was just more annoying than anything.
 
Yeah, now the war is who has the better marketing and deeper pockets.

Not sure how much that will matter this gen because of BC. Sony is going to have BC for PS4 games so leaving the Sony ecossytem from PS4 to MS means you will lose your library. Same for anyone thinking of going Sony to MS.

I think a bunch of people will stick with whatever they had last gen. Especially now that MS has purchased a bunch of studios to help them with their exclusives.
 
I will stay with PlayStation... I have Xbox game pass on my pc so legit haven’t even turned my Xbox on in a month... if I didn’t get such a good Black Friday deal last year I wouldn’t of ever bought an Xbox anyways. Just got it because a few friends have it but with Xbox gamepass on pc no reason to pick up there next gen
 
The light bar was originally for the camera that was going to be originally packed in with the base PS4 at launch for tracking which ended up with the VR instead.

Also some games make use of it as indicators too:

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition: Whenever Lara picks up a torch, your controller turns into a real-life guiding light, flickering yellow and red to mimic the in-game flame. Atmospheric when you're playing in the dark, and useful for an impromptu round of campfire stories.


Destiny: Bungie's shooter offers a number of colors to indicate states, including the ever-popular red for low health, white to match Ghost's flashlight, and yellow if your super attack is fully charged. That last one's perfect for backseat players who love to tell people what they already know.


Alien Isolation: Creative Assembly puts the shock into DualShock with arguably the best light bar feature to date. The controller mirrors the in-game motion tracker, pulsing white light against green in time with the device to indicate someone is nearby, or... something. Throw in the creepy speaker noises and you've just added jeebies to go with those heebies.

Grand Theft Auto 5: In addition to changing color based on which character you're playing, the light bar flashes red and blue whenever the cops are on your tail. You know, just in case there was any confusion.


Infamous Second Son: A real karma chameleon. The strength of the hue emitted indicates your karma level; a nice strong red and you're clearly a bit of a bastard. On the more gimmicky side, when you hold your DualShock vertically to spray paint, the light bar matches the color of the graffiti.


Transistor: The light bar pulses the same blue as the game's talking weapon, flashing in sync with the big sword's speech. The idea, presumably, is to make you feel like you're holding the Transistor, minus having to drag around something twice your size.


Honorable mentions: Fez (color changes to match in-game time of day), Peggle 2 (a rainbow fireworks show when you beat a level), Thief (shines a bright white when you're out in the open), Hohokum (matches the ever-changing color of the Long Mover), Outlast (goes green when night vision is activated)
 
Hopefully the old DS4 works with the PS5. "Adaptive triggers" and "haptic feedback" sound like expensive gimmicks that will decrease the new controllers' lifespan.

Yeah it has some features but I think myself and every other PS4 user would trade that for the option to turn it off.

That’s part of the reason I have multiple controllers, being the short battery life. That and I like the looks of the ones I’ve purchased.
