Aprils update brings cold storage for PS5 on external storage and some new social features

https://blog.playstation.com/2021/0...ings-new-storage-options-and-social-features/

  • Store PS5 Games on Compatible External USB Drives.* With this feature, you can now transfer your PS5 games to USB extended storage from your console’s internal storage. It’s a great way to extend the storage capabilities of your PS5 console, and you can seamlessly copy your PS5 games back to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play. It is faster to reinstall PS5 games from USB extended storage than to re-download or copy them from a disc.
  • Because PS5 games are designed to take advantage of the console’s ultra high-speed SSD, PS5 titles can’t be played from USB extended storage. PS5 titles also cannot be directly downloaded to USB extended storage. However, games that you transfer or copy back to internal storage will automatically update when applicable. In addition, you can select which game modes you want to install (such as campaign or multiplayer) for select titles that support the option.
  • For tips on using USB extended storage on PS5, including storage device requirements, please visit: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5-extended-storage/.

Don't do it.

None of the big games are coming any time soon, few months more hardly makes a difference. Don't give those clowns a single dollar.
: ( I need it though....I need it. Like a crack where needs crack

As long as their games continue to come to Steam I don't care. If they start making it Epic exclusive I'm going to be pissed.

Unless it includes a deal that removes the unreal engine 5 royalty Sony should be publishing on every format available excluding Xbox services. Sony games will most likely be cheaper to buy on Epic. This will likely drive me towards Epic a bit more if anything. I’ve been collecting their free offerings periodically and even though most of them aren’t popular and famous games there are several real gems here. The only Sony games I’d want so far would be exclusive single player games anyway so it wouldn’t matter where I get it (Epic or Steam).

I just like to keep everything on Steam if possible. Last reported Epic was bleeding through money and they expect to become profitable in 2023 which I don't see happening. I don't want my games tied to a store that could eventually go away or be discontinued.

They're losing money because they are trying to fight against one of the biggest dog of them all (Steam). They made a lot of deals and promotion to lure and build a player base. It is not surprising at all for them to not be profitable. Just like Game Pass is technically not profitable for Microsoft as of now. Yes they make a shit ton of revenues each year but it is offset by all the promotions and deals to bring high profile games and now they just dropped several billions for Bethesda. All to build a player base.

Last I checked the Epic player base has grown. By a lot. I don't see why they won't be successful later on. I was one of those people that was reluctant into getting Epic just like you. Why play on Epic when I can just buy shit on Steam (and keep it all in one spot). But I have come around. it's not different from Steam and it is just as easy to set up. I have played only one game on Epic so far but I can see myself using it more later on (and there are several free games that I will be playing once I find some time). It is just that every time I am logged on I am playing with my friends. I don't see myself switching out of Steam for co-op games (cause all my online friends are on Steam) unless there's a co-op blockbuster game that is free only on Epic and my friends and I really want to play it. But who knows.

I don't understand why they don't get serious with PSNow.

There's been rumors about a "counterpunch" to Game Pass, but the latest rumor I saw talked about balling up all this dumb shit that has nothing to do with gaming into a single entertainment service. Hopefully it isn't that because that's such a garbage idea.

Just make PSNow viable! The only reason I can surmise why Sony is hesitant to do this is because accommodating the PC is accommodating Microsoft Windows, and Microsoft is their competitor. Every PC sale ultimately delivers a cut to Microsoft. Cool, I get that. So why not go all-in with Linux? Sony could become the force that finally, truly pushes Linux into the mainstream so that developers don't ignore it. Steam would love them for it. They would ignore Sony's partnership with their rival Epic out of interest for this common goal.

Now that would really make Microsoft shit bricks. That's not threatening a crop. That's threatening the whole farm.

Priorities
  1. End the requirement to subscribe to PS Plus to access the service on PC. This is by far the most important measure.
  2. End this streaming-only crap for games that exist on PC. Let gamers download the game. Then show Microsoft up and give them folder control for each individual game's installation.
  3. Enable the app on PC to integrate with stores like Steam and Epic so that users may use their respective services (i.e. friends lists, chat, mods, etc).
  4. Increase the streaming resolution to 1080p for games which must be rendered on Sony servers & streamed (because they are Playstation exclusives with no PC port).
  5. Implement the same discount to games for permanent ownership to those who are subscribed that Microsoft does for Game Pass. Afford dual ownership to games that exist on both Playstation and PC for this. If you buy it on PC, you own it on Playstation, and vice versa.
  6. For gamers on both platforms who do also subscribe to PS Plus, extend Playstation Plus giveaways for multiplatform games that exist on PC to that platform for PSNow subscribers. Maybe go ahead and bundle PS Plus and PSNow into an "Ultimate" tier like Microsoft does for Game Pass. Difference is there could be two "Ultimate" tiers. One tier bundles both services on Playstation alone. The highest tier bundles them on Playstation and PC.

Don't tell me that 6-point plan doesn't get your dick diamond hard.

Don't buy on Epic. Don't let Tencent and China win. They think they can buy us with the free games. I've been happy to collect those, but that's the end of it. Use them. Exploit them. Suck up every ounce of free capital they're willing to squander until they realize there won't be a return.

Beyond that, I appreciate the competition they've brought, which has been good to incentivize Steam to share more profits with developers, but that's just another silver lining. Long term, they'll never be anything other than a puppet who answers directly to an authoritarian Chinese government, and as soon as that government believes Epic has achieved enough influence to project CCP interests & values, they won't hesitate to leverage that.

Sony doesn't seem to mind accommodating PC since they are releasing their games on steam and will be doing more after Days Gone according to Jim Ryan. I have no idea what the counterpunch to gamepass will be from Sony. I doubt it will involve all their first party games being day 1 launches though. They've previously stated that they've looked into this and financially it just doesn't make sense for them. Whether they've changed their mind on that or not who knows.

Regarding #1 though are you saying you have to pay for PS plus and Psnow in order to use the service or just to play games online? I agree with the rest of the points 100%.

Oh I know why they are losing money and I think once they are done with exclusives\free games people will just continue to use the store they prefer which is steam. Almost every PC gaming community I see is saying they wont be touching Epic beyond the free games. There are some outliers here and there but they are far and few between. It's not helping Epic that they seem to be putting in almost no effort into improving the store.

Yes, unless that changed recently. This was something I learned while compiling all the most meaningful bullet points about each service when I built my Game Services thread. PC gamers have to subscribe to PS Plus in order to use PSNow. Playstation users do not.

If that's changed one major hurdle has already been leapt, and I'll update the Game Services OP accordingly.

hhmm I'm not to sure never used the service just surprised to hear that. Looking online wasn't very clear either.

Another thing they should try to figure out with PS Now is on the game you stream have them pick up where you left off instead of at the title screen. I basically don't bother with the games I have to stream because it's such a pain in the ass having to make sure I save and exit properly so I don't lose progress.

I'd also love for them to bring over some ps1 games.

Weird dont they already do tue the preload thing, warzone let me update about 3 days before and when its done it says its ready for use only on said date.

Btw im glad the anxiety of not having a ps5 is over a friend hooked me up for one at srp all i had to do was buy it with a bundle of 1 controller and a game of my choice, i i actually like that new strategy as it lessens the scalpers option they thinl twice about buying a expensive bundle because they wouldn't be able to easily sell all the games and accessories.
