'Prometheus' and 'Alien Covenant' explained

The writing in these movies was so awful it completely ruined whatever Ridley was going for.

It's hard to get behind and care for characters who are so fucking dumb that the first thing they do is remove their protective gear when exploring a new planet.

How about handing out pamphlets to moviegoers?

Good lord. Though the mythology of Dune is so dense the writers were facing an uphill battle no matter what they did.

Pretty much. They were handing these out when I went to see it. They handed them out at the entrance of a dimly lit theater. So, good luck reading it. They just ended up littering the theater. Without understanding the lore, or reading Herbert's work, you were lost.

The toy line was interesting. It was one of the first toy lines geared towards adult fans.

Prometheus was a wasted opportunity that could have been completely redeemed with a sweet sequel. Instead we got really bad sci fi with no real sci and a good fassbender performance wasted.

They didn’t listen to smart people all screaming for the same things because they didn’t like realizing fans are actually fkn smarter than they are.. So they pretended the opposite of reality was true, that it needed to be dumbed down, and they wasted another opportunity even worse than before.

I really like "Prometheus" and still do. "Alien Covenant" was a bit of a mess, but not without it's qualities. I'll take Ridley Scott messing around with the franchise any day of the week, over some by the numbers bullshit that others have made of this franchise.

Audience: Your story was poorly written for reasons W, X, Y and Z and here are the scenes and plotholes for reference.

Ridley and Studio: What, you're mad because it didn't have enough of the xenomorph? Okay here we go!

I don't know. It's pretty easy to just forget about Alien: Resurrection and even Alien 3. They can both kind of be dismissed as fever dreams.

It's somewhat harder to dismiss the ruination of the Space Jockey and pretend it didn't happen. These prequels really went in and gorilla glued themselves to the underpinnings of the first movies.

The fans asking for more xenomorph action annoyed me, because I wanted Enginner lore. We have freaking multiple Alien movies with Xenomorphs, so more of the same is boring. Lore / backstory and Engineer homeworld would have been far more interesting.

The YouTuber Kroft, who has made a lot of Aliens/Prometheus/Covenant vides, says Scott has Alien Awakening in the works. Hopefully Scott does not throw in more xenomorphs and call it a day, but focus on the Engineers and their homeworld. But I don't have high hopes, because it would take a lot more hard work - creatively speaking - to make a convincing Engineer homeworld and lore.

It would be nice if they did the heavy lifting and fleshed all of that out. Sure seems like they're set on something like strong woman with shortish hair leads team of dummies against bad monsters and mean robot though.

The plot holes of these movies are fucking staggering. Not only do they retcon Alien, they fucking retcon themselves for Christ’s sake.

In Alien it was pretty apparent that the derelict space ship had been crashed on LV 426 for a very long time, centuries, maybe even millennia, with the facehugger eggs onboar. Meanwhile in Prometheus in the engineer’s ship there’s murals on the walls showing xenomorphs. Yet Covenant makes it as though David is going to eventually create the xenomorphs through his experiments when chronologically Covenant takes place maybe like 10-20 years before Alien?

Fuck off.

It gets even worse. I've seen the third draft of the Alien: Awakening script and they go to LV-117 and remove the Space Jockey's mask to reveal this underneath.

Prometheus was trash. Couldnt keep my attention for more than fifteen minutes and I tried from various points throughout the movie just catching it on a TV. Never watched Covenant. The series will always be Sigourney Weaver for me and I like 3.

Nothing to add except Katherine waterston looks waaaay better with long hair.

What’s to explain? Those movies were fucking dogshit.

While not great movies either I prefer to treat the AVP movies as “canon” and ignore Prometheus and Covenant.

This.

AvP, while shitty, doesn’t massacre the Alien lore like what Prometheus and Covenant did.

Honestly I don't understand why all the hate for the film's. I loved both Prometheus and Covenant. I'm starting to think it's the die hard fans that didn't like the film's due to the plot holes. I'm not the biggest fan of the franchise to begin with so I guess it didn't bother me as much.

But I can't take people seriously when they say they were bored or that they were practically sleeping through the movies.
