Murder and violent crime in general was in a freefall from about 1990-2010. This is almost perfectly in line with the internet and home computers either not being a factor in social life at all, being in their infancy, or not being available in your pocket 24/7.

On the other hand, technology has made crime easier to track and punish. It has created a ton of distractions (porn, computer games, virtual communities) for people that would otherwise seek this in the outside world and in deviant ways.

Free fall kind of like how marriage rates were in freefall. I think the adage is cops start with spouses as suspects in crimes for a reason. Anyhow, I think people look to tail events too much TBH, like murder and suicide as a barometer of things. It's easy to measure, but I think whether something happens to 5 out of 100,000 people or 7 out of 100,000 people isn't particularly meaningful.

Where people will see vice and decadence is generally through their every day interactions and the feelings; which will likely be people addicted online seeing too much outrageous stuff, the massive proliferation of pornography and online sex work, or perpetually inundated with bad news tragic media stories. IRL "decadence" will largely if not entirely be anecdotal and philosophical and people don't like arguing over anecdotes since the ending will always be "that's just your opinion". There's not much for stat keeping in that regards.

It's pretty silly to think it's the most violent and decadent the world has ever been; but I can understand (especially religious) conservative types born post WW2 viewing their society as being the most decadent of their lifetimes.

How did you know who was a bad tipper before a delivery was made? If you just did it by address or number, then there was collateral damage...
