Too many threads about the main event.

Carlos Prates was getting the better of the standup by far. But Geoff didn't even get a chance to go to his corner and get some advice.

Geoff protected himself at the end of R1 by wrestling Prates to the fence. He had control. Then Prates talked shit to him about becoming a wrestler and Neal let go, I guess caring too much about Prates' opinion or about looking good to onlookers, rather than sticking to what he needed to maximise the chance of winning. He didnt make Prates fight out of it. Then got KOed almost right away.

Pretty bad case of a fighter letting their opponent taunt them into a bad plan.

I'm also trying to think of similar cases, mid-fight. Someone being persuaded by their opponent to switch from striking to grappling or from grappling control to striking and then losing.
Any cases where someone's really dominating and then loses due to reacting to trash talk? Mythical fighter: "X with earplugs"?

I never once thought about this! This might be one of the most interesting threads anyone has ever started here, I really hope it doesn't sink to the bottom and disappear.

Hmm, not the best example, but first one coming to mind is Melvin Gulliard vs Nate.

He's winning the stand-up, Diaz is trying to clinch and even going for TDs, Diaz is slowly starting to land, hits some good jabs, a 1-2, and suddenly Melvin does a silly rope-a-dope, into a TD, and gets choked out.

Nate doesn't do much besides land a couple good punches, to get Melvin to change tactics.

Neal was in no way dominating up until that. He was going to lose that round handily.

What a load of nonsense. Neal wasn't dominating anywhere in the fight; he held Carlos against the fence, but Prates defended himself well and got out. He gave up on his opponent's merit, not on his words.

Never said he was dominating. He just had control enough to maybe make it to his corner.
"Any cases where someone was dominating" was a Q inspired by this fight, but asking for different types of scenarios to this particular one.

Sherdoggers can't read, confirmed. Back to elementary school bucko.

Maybe Kevin Holland at some point. You know that motherfucker likes to talk in the middle of a fight.

I feel like Carlos kind of reminded Neal that they should stand. And Neal was like oh yeah what am I doing wrestling this isn’t doing anything for me anyways. Lol

It was a slick comment that played to his ego.
