Poirier resume is insane

he fought all monsters in his divisions and mostly won them all

conor(W x2), gaethje(W), chandler(W), oliveira (L), khabib (L), alvarez(W), hooker(W), pettis(W), even prime Holloway(W)

Poirier is already virtually in HOF
It's interesting to me how Poirier beat some of the best guys by TKO, but had to go to a hard fought decision with Hooker. I wonder how he feels about that performance now.

He's literally never beaten anybody higher ranked than #3 Eddie Alvarez. Which was 5 years ago.

Stop calling people all time greats when they've never even been, however brief it might be, #1 in their weight class at any point in their career. It makes the whole concept meaningless if you start throwing in the perennial gatekeepers into the mix instead of actually keeping it among the best fighters.

Especially in situations like here where they repeatedly failed to win the belt. These aren't what if fighters. They had chances and lost them. They weren't the best.

Yeah Conor got in his head and Poirier didn't box back then. Despite having similar experience (time in the sport), you can say Poirier was a greener fighter than Conor was back then.

The roles revered and Dustin showed McGregor who daddy is. Don't get in this shot of you aren't all in, you can, and in Conor's case, will get hurt.
Prime Conor could and did absolutely flatten Dustin. He was a horrible stylistic matchup for him back when he was mobile, rangy and cared.

The whiskey bum Dustin embarrassed twice deserved it though and current Dustin would retire conor for good if they fought again.

Conor’s brief window was much higher though and he was a bad matchup for Dustin once upon a time.

Would love to see him get over the hump and get that belt.
Dude's a seriously violent fighter as well.

Unrelated: Do you only start threads about ethnically French fighters?

Ferreira, Bobby and Jim are great B level wins too. Werent ever in the top tier like some names here but still really good fighters.

Yancy and Duffy were decent fighters too. Dustin ended the short lived Duffy hypetrain people forget that now lol.

His most forgotten win is Josh Grispi. That was his FW debut and reason he dropped down after WEC merge. Grispi was 14-1, a top 5 FW, finished Hominick, Jens and LC Davis in under a round combined. He was the number 1 contender and supposed to fight Jose Aldo for the title. Dustin derailed his entire career. He stayed too long at FW the weight cut was hurting him he was never among the true contenders there.

Wtf brought Frankie Edgar into this conversation??? Frankie wasn’t even some MMA wrestling phenom, Gray outwrestled him before and Frankie couldn’t outwrestle Aldo when he needed to.

It would be nice to see him win a title but I doubt it with Islam being the champion.

I would say the punches that knocked him out were the difference. Conor had a couple minutes of even fighting before Dustin whooped that ass.
Conor won that first round! You started buying into Dustin’s narrative that it would’ve happened regardless, albeit the guy that fought Conor the third time dominated all phases of the fight, because Conor initiated the clinch. … But, in that second fight Dustin was down a round and ate another left hand before the calf kicks turned the tide. Besides the calf kicks, Dustin landed two surprise jabs that I’m shocked Conor didn’t counter, but he still lost that round.

Dustin's one of those weird cases, his resume is solid, but no championships and the losses to the tip top of the class kinda keep him at gatekeeper status, which feels weird to say about him.

Others mentioned it's hard to call someone all time great if they've never held that #1 spot, but he is a warrior for sure.

Gray Maynard was top 10 three years (might need a fact check) at MSU.
Aldo's TDD and scramble *"back up" hips were as good as anyone at the time.

I cannot stand Poirier but yeah he has pulled off some amazing wins like you listed, frankly I was amazed at his performances vs Alvarez and Gaetje, both he was so close to losing but outlasted them. His durability at 155 is something else.

So that makes his mention of Frankie relevant?
Also keep in mind we’ve seen more decorated wrestlers than Gray; and he dominated the wrestling in their first match, he looked another level above Frankie, (yet dude brought him on Page 1). Chad was able to take Aldo down, I don’t recall Frankie doing it all all in their first match, if he got him down in the second it was insignificant. (Yet dude mentioned Frankie on page 1)

The mma wrestling looked pretty even in the matches against Benson, I never understood why there even was a rematch. Prime Frankie wasn’t some juggernaut that was a matchup nightmare for Dustin is my point. It was irrelevant bringing him up.
