News PFL Dropping Tournament Format

Get with the times. Unless you're pushing for a tournament with 1 5min round per fight for 8 guys. There's not anywhere with a sanctioning body that allows this.
screw the times. something different will be the biggest thing they can do.

kickboxing still does one night tournaments. oklahoma was the last state to do it, brock larson won, and you could still do it today.

this would be refreshing and brings it back to the roots. a proper one man tournament, only the most badass can do it/and want to do it.

the bragging rights would be insane. that would actually be a feat you can hold over a UFC fighter.

a modern day 2026 ultimate ultimate would be the most badass thing ever. the ultimate ultimate title. there's no denying that.

I like the tournaments but it did seem the best was rarely the winner so stopped caring and just wanted a good fight.

I think this is a mistake,

Why couldnt they just have tournments run with Match ups done outside of the tournament matches ...

The tournament format was good for keeping the sport more pure vs...the non sense we see sometimes in the UFC.

PFL giving its identity up in a niche market...that usually a big mistake or atleast a gamble...

They need to stay the course while boosting cards with the other fighters who dont want to compete in the tournaments ...they can do fun match ups with no ranking ramifications while leaving title contention for the tournaments..

So if you want to be a PFL champion you do the tournaments...

If you want to fight under the PFL banner and put on great fights and maybe do some matchups we the fans have never seen then fight outside the tournaments..

This should be the way ..

if you're going to do a tournament, the ONLY way that people can get interested, especially if its a bunch of no ones, is you have to do a ONE NIGHT tournament again. that's it. that's real MMA, that's the basis of it, that's the reality.

any event that did that, would guarantee views, interest, buzz, etc. ANYONE who wins a one night tournament instalty deservers respect and would get it in my opinion. that is how you stand out. that's the only way you can do tournaments.
They tried that when they were WSOF already in 2015 with the lightweights. It was a complete shitshow and nobody even remembered it after it happened.

Nah. They were literally doing what you are talking about ever since they bought Bellator. Y'know, the Champions series, PFL Tournament Season, Super Fights series, Europe series, etc. That's literally what that was. Donn Davis was a dumbass with no sense of the MMA scene.

It didn't work. Neither hardcore fans or casuals were interested so they're moving forward and it's a good thing.

They went about it wrong...

Creating this different series or sideshows was a mistake...

No1 can follow a show within a show...with in a show..

They need to organize, and do cards with Tournament matches and proper top level match making on the same cards, super fights, cross weight division fights ( one offs) , big marquee match ups .. that way you tune in for tournament and get bonus content of fun fights or strong match making...like why would you have Gegard Mousasi sitting ever...or some of the other guys they had...

Bellator dropped off pretty fucking hard when the ended the BellaBjorn tournaments after Coker's fat ass took over.

PFL is just gonna turn into WSOF all over again without the tournaments. Dark times ahead for MMA without any decent competition to the UFC. At least Strike Force and EliteXC had some decently big names putting on some pretty exciting fights.

PFL will die unless they learn to promote. Not the promotion but the new guys... build them up. Tell and show us where they are great. Build up anticipation.

Do they have enough big stars to discard star making tourneys?

They're awful at those outside the tournament matchmaking
Ngannou didn't fight for the last 12 months, same for his opponent, same for Doumbé, Lazy King, Musaev, Loughnane
They have guys on a big pay, but it looks like they don't have enough events and a budget for each event to match those guys

As cool as that would be, I'm not sure today's fighters of noteworthy are willing to do that.

Then do enough people care to watch a one night tournament with little name value attach to it, can that even make money?

Personally, back in the day when I was watching early UFC's it was more about just seeing two guys locked in a cage fighting and the tournament was more or less the cherry on top of it all. It was just something the general fan never saw before and that is what made it interesting to joe blow fan. The sport and fan base has evolved so much that most fans are now looking for names or key match ups to draw themselves in. That isn't event taking into account that for joe blow the UFC=MMA today and everything else is trash in their minds.

Bellator Friday nights tournaments were awesome.

PFL tournaments didn't felt the same.

I would drop you harder than PFL dropped their shitty tournaments.
i'm not worried, our legendary canadian ground game and takedowns are legendary, i would G'n'Pound you like never before !

Most ACs are not sanctioning a one night tournament like that. Combate Global held a tournament in Florida a little bit ago and they had to it across 2 days and had to modify the rounds to adjust with only the final being 3 5 minute rounds.

You would try to lay on me in a not complete heterosexal way... be honest.

well yea thats 2015 WSOF.

doesn't have the name of UFC, or even name power that current PFL has.

PFL can separate themselves, has the ESPN, got some decent fighters, it'd be totally different. and even if it is a shitshow, compared to the crap they are churning out now?

its only a win win.

oklahoma state its legal, it can be done, and if one MMA org was smart, they'd do it
