Answer is 9. Source is grams was an elementary school teacher. I asked her she was emabarassed....

This is some Grade 5 math.....
 
Why did brackets get cancelled and replaced with this thin wristed nose in the air parentheses?
 


I'm old enough that I learned it both ways. In junior school we were taught the old way which gives an answer of 1, in middle school we went to the modern method which gives 9. Then in high school we had this one teacher who still did things the old way which confused the shit out of everyone.
 
Multiplication and division have the same priority. So working left to right division comes first here.

9 is correct.



Only correct answers. I intuitively answered 9, and my TI-36X also answered 9. Division and multiplication have the same priority and division doesn't separate terms, unless it's a fraction. You can think of the division as a multiplication of 6 times one half: 6*1/2. So after solving the parenthesis you get:

6*1/2*3 = 9
