Palhares should not be cut! The Ref sucks.

The problem was that he held on to long AFTER the ref jumped in. Actually I think the ref was pretty fast imo and he tried to make Palhares release as good as he could instead of just waving with his hands. Palhares is the only one to blame. He has a history of doing it in MMA and Grappling as well.

Maybe he will get another chance but imo he needs to apologize and not try to justify what he did. And that

Yes. You go until the ref stops it. But as soon as the ref touches you, you have to let go of your submission/pull back on your strikes.

That is what the problem is. Palhares tightened the torque after the ref touched him. It doesn't matter if it was only an extra 1.3 seconds - Palhares has created the perception that a ref has to forcibly separate him from a submitted/defenseless fighter in a safe and timely manner. That's horseshit. What if it was Kim Winslow and she was unable to break Palhares' grip? It honestly looks like that's what the ref had to do to get Palhares to stop...

Big John would have problems to open Palhares grip especially if it has to happen fast. Kim Winslow would have to hit him in the head with a bat to make him stop. The guy is strong as an ox.

Ok so why did Palhares crank the sub AFTER the ref jumped in?

Watch the ref's head and pushing motion at what may or may not be the moment Palhares cranked. It's very possible that the ref caused him to turn to his left.

In a perfect world the ref would break the submission apart as they dive in
rather than just belly-flopping close by

Palhares will continue to make money and be exciting outside of the UFC. People actin' like he died.

In a perfect world the fighters would know when to stop. Especially in situations where it is as obvious as here.

Sonnen's little tap against Anderson was strange to begin with, so it's a bad comparison

That gif just shows the he kept cranking the leg after the ref literally jumped into the pile. What do you want the ref to do, punch him in the face?

It's not the ref's job to have precision point accuracy in where he lands when he steps in to stop the fight. His job is to look in on the action, recognize when the tap comes, and then step in to signal the end of the fight. The ref did that, it was Paul Harris who screwed up. He should have recognized that his hold was tight and deep, he should have recognized the tap, and he should have been looking out for the ref coming in to stop it. But instead he just stayed in his own little world and even cranked the sub as the ref was on top of them. Maybe it's not malicious, but it's still dangerous, and he has a long history of doing this in fights, in submission wrestling matches, in training, etc. He needs to nip this in the bud. I can only hope that he FINALLY got the message now and will act accordingly.

While I agree Palhares should have been disiplined I think a lifetime ban was harsh. Its not like he used illegal drugs , which is cheating. Unsportsman like conduct is pitiful but they should take his purse and give him a 6 month suspension and make it worse each time. But lifetime ban for a fight that he won and held a leg lock for a second too long? I got pushed by a scranny coworker at work last month that in " the real world" outside my job I would have knocked his head off. He was just warned but not fired to not do it again. Palhares should not have been fired..

It's not entirely clear if he received a lifetime ban or not. Some reports said he was "banned" others said he was merely "released".

He had the sub cranked, ref jumped in, clearly saw him, still held on for an extra second or two. That's enough time to seriously damage a ligament, deserved cut.

No way was it a extra second, people are just using this as a scapegoat

Finally a thread that talks about this....oh wait a minute....cry, sniff, boo hoo....he is cut...three strikes and your gone....like it or not....two times for holding holds too long and one PED use.....

Why is this so hard to grasp?

it was a complete overreaction.

that's why the Brazilian commission suspended him, UFC cut him and Bellator refused to sign him the following day.

He is a vicious killer only belonging in the streets!

lol
