One-hit wonder champions in MMA

Looks like Holly Holm does not get mentioned when she is the Buster Douglas of MMA. That is her legacy to the sport of MMA. She did show some great promise when she came into the sport, but ultimately entering MMA too late at the age of 34 and her fierce and blind loyalty to Winklejohn academy when her skills were failing to evolve, really did her in. Even when she was asked to switch coaching after successive losses, she would refuse to let one word against Winklejohn.

She only had one big-hit win. She only looked good against extremely mediocre fighters like Bethe Correia or Megan Anderson (who also was beating Holly on the feet and Holly had to become a panic wrestler to get a decision win).

After the Rousey win, she completely fizzled out and never could get close to replicating that success that she did against Ronda Rousey. Her next best win was against Irene Aldana who was exposed later on, as a mediocre fighter and none of the hype of the ultimate Mexican boxer that was been perpetuated.

As far as elite fighters go, she completely failed to do any significant damage against Cyborg, Miesha or Valentina and was completely demolished without even much of a fight by the GOAT herself Amanda Nunes via a 1st round knockout. While I understand, she was long way past her prime when she fought Kayla Harrison, but Kayla put a clinic on her.

Anyway, all in all, Holly Holm will always be remembered as the Buster Douglas of MMA. She only did the same thing over and over again in MMA. The same exact repeated rushing in and blitzing of rapid fire one-two combinations (accompanied by "ish! ish!") followed by a kick. Also, the same repeated oblique kick that Rogan raved so much about earlier on, but was easily countered once she got figured out. Most of her wins were by walling and stalling against the cage while maintaining good cardio. She came in as a 19 times boxing champion, but only showed how big the difference is between men's boxing championships and women's championships in terms of skill sets.

I'd say Holly Holm belongs on the list. Had the biggest upset win in WMMA against Ronda, then lost the belt in her next fight and is an under .500 fighter since then.
And what a one hit it was… like Vanilla Ice Ice Ice Baby level one hit wonder.. If you’re gunna be a one hit wonder, what a way to do it…

I would add Marlon Sandro. He held the Pancrase and Sengoku titles at the same time. Prior to losing a decision to Hatsu Hioki, he had put three straight dudes on stretchers.

If I remember correctly he was also the favorite to win the Bellator tournament despite that loss to Hioki, and was handily winning the fight against Pat Curran in the final before his head movement led him straight to a kick to the head. From that point on he was never the same

For a brief one year period in 2009 he was the most feared FW, and there were debates about if Sandro or Aldo was the best FW in Nova Uniao and in the world. Nowadays UFC fans probably remember him from this reaction gif

I was high on Sandro before he walked into Hioki. Still one of my worst predictions and comparisons I'll ever make in this sport.

Same here. If I remember correctly they were all underwhelming.

I remember he fought Stun Gun Kim in a close but boring fight. Lost though.
He had a very decent fight with Hyun Gyu Lim at his UFC debut, which was not only a FOTN but also a premature FOTY contender (fight happened in January)...
But after that... it was all downhill...

Eddie Wineland was a 1-time WEC bantamweight champ before it was acquired by UFC. No defenses, never got another title shot, except a shot at interim gold in UFC, which he lost.

That's a great pick.

I was a fan of the guy... He gave us a lot of fun fights in both WEC and UFC.

But he was really stubborn about his 'hands down" style of standup and it really hurt him as far as wins and losses go... But Damn it make for some great stuff in the JBG category.

Sean stickland is the one i think of. That dude maxed out with his skill set and won a championship. That guy will never beat a top 5 guy again
Bro, he beat Izzy, Costa, Imavov and Dricus, basically the top 5 guys in the division lol. Hate his fighting style and personality in general and also think he kinda gave up on fighting and is now only looking for clout on social media, but dude beat all the top guys at MW, including one of the top 5 MW’s of all time, the actual champ and the next number 1 contender (Imavov) after Khamzat, you cant call him 1 hit wonder.
