The only thing I can think is maybe something is being set up for Islam at 170? Otherwise, goddamn, used to be that interims were for when champs were gonna be out for like a year & you’d think Islam is just as ready to go as he was last weekend. There’s gotta be an explanation behind the scenes??

If Volk actually turns around and makes the Topuria fight in January after getting koed then he’d be fighting not only before the next 155 title fight but before even the interim…crazy. Given the potential timeline, would not be surprised if his crazy ass tries to be a back up for the 155 unification fight lol

If it's true at all, that's actually probably best. I said yesterday to someone, it's stupid to have Islam take fights where he's like a -350 or 400 favorite, and is much better for both divisions if Islam fights for the WW title while these 2 fight each other, and Islam stays at WW if he wins and these guys can be a real champ, or Islam loses and the odds will be closer with him coming off a loss and whoever wins this having a better win streak, especially if it's Gaethje.

When he initially called out Conor, Islam was being matched with Dariush for a number 1 contender spot because he had no top 5 wins and the RDA fight kept falling through. He wasn't avoiding Islam, Islam got the shot because Charles had beaten everyone else and with Dariush out they just skipped that fight. Originally Islam called out RDA, who accepted and then Islam ended up ducking that fight at 170.

Same interview Dana mentions the plastic surgeon, he mentions that fighters do this to him all the time and call after it's too late to fix it and make the fight.

Go and watch the interview that the quote is pulled from about calling out Conor again. The entire prior conversation is about him wanting the Islam fight or title fight.

I agree...as much as I like Charles his behaviour has been questionable especially when it comes to fighting Islam. I don't know if it's to do with Abu Dhabi but at the end of the day once the cage closes it's mano a mano.

Before the first fight, he kept complaining that Islam doesn't deserve a title shot whilst at the same time calling for a Connor fight.

Before the second fight was announced, he was behaving strangely then too. He said he wouldn't be ready for October but happy to fight in November onwards lol.

When the fight got announced many (rightly) said he would pull out and lo and behold that's what happened.

Last week he was calling for Connor again, anytime, any weight and any PLACE. Instead of being criticised people are still giving him a pass and making excuses for him!

I think you forget there are payscales for title holders in both fight purses and in sponsorship dollars. It's just an excuse to pay the fighters more money.

Also if a champion can't return for june or whatever date you can always promote interim champs to full time champ, like they did with barao and whittaker.

Barao is an example of interim champ done right. IIRC, Cruz had to pull out of a defense about a month before the fight, and had a long timetable for return. Barao defended that interim BW title twice before being promoted to undisputed champ.

Likewise, when Couture was in contract disputes with the UFC with no idea of he’d ever return or how long it might be, that was a good reason to crown an interim champ. This shit that the UFC has been doing with interims these past few years hurts the product and really needs to stop.
