Islam was on an impressive winning streak. If he didn't deserve a title shot then neither did Charles for beating the ghost of Tony or Chandler for being a Bellator veteran.
On one hand Charles was calling for a Connor fight and on the other he wanted Islam to fight other guys. The irony was amusing. It was only when Rogan had a quiet word with Dana did common sense prevail.
Leading to the rematch, Charles was at it again. First he said he won't be ready until November then he accepted the fight. Perhaps he got a better offer but regardless, many remained skeptical and rightly so. Charles isn't the champ and there should be repercussions for pulling out so near a major event.
The ghost of Tony? He was one fight removed from the same streak as Islam with actual quality ranked wins,ex LW champions and an interim belt. Chandler got his shot off beating Islams best win in a dominant 1st round finish. When you discredit these guys you discredit Islam and prove the point. It's almost like you forget the only reason we got Charles vs Chandler was because Khabib had just beaten DP and Gaethje within the proceeding 12 months and they had no wins since then.
If Conor got past DP he would have gotten the shot. I don't agree with it, but saying Charles was avoiding Islam at that time is just stupid. He still had some value as a previous champ at that point.
Islam didn't have a real claim to the shot at that time. He had one active year his entire UFC career (2021) and went from number 14 to top 5 with 1 top 10 win. The guy looks amazing with the belt now and is impressive, but that's off a fight against a guy who apparently ducked him in Charles and the 2 Volk wins.
He got a massive cut in the last round before he went out to Abu dhabi. Do you think he was out the back banging his head against a wall just to duck Islam? It's a contact sport where injuries happen.
