I doubt this.
And if they crown an interim champ in February, when would they be ready to actually defend it? June at the earliest, same as the actual LW title lol.Well, we know islam will not fight in march because of Ramadan, We know he wont fight in april either for the same reason, Probably can start training around the end of april, then he'll be ready to fight late may or june. If the LW title doesn't get defended in February, then it's may/june at the absolute earliest.
That's too long to not have a title picture, No top LW are going to want to fight.
Which is his only standing sub and a typical to his normal style. I'm not saying it won't happen. I'm saying it's hard to do and unlikely even for Charles. He submitted Dustin with a standing RNC.
He submitted Lentz, Brooks and Jury standing too. Also the Guida, Teymur and Lee subs did not need a takedown. He submitted Dustin with a standing RNC.
Also, to say Gaethje has 0 bjj is inaccurate. He defended an arm bar and rear triangle from Charles while rocked. His issue is that, like most folk style guys, he is too comfortable exposing his backJustin has zero BJJ and is going to get subbed again.
Olivera doesn't need to wrestle to take him down. He can chain submissions off strikes and submit him standing.
It makes sense if Islam was promised a shot at 170. If Colby wins the belt then a fight with Islam is probably the biggest event that the UFC will have that year. We know that the UFC will do everything in its power to put on big spectacles and ignore the rankings entirely.
Colby doesn't take fights on short camps. Leon Edwards also takes longer camps and breaks. So if Islam is moving up to 170 he's going to be sitting out for probably 8-9 months from now at least before Colby or Leon will return. So the UFC will do an interim Lightweight fight with their two biggest names in the division to keep things exciting for the casual fans.
This is basically the UFC signalling that Islam is going for two belts.
It's hard to undo years of wrestling especially when you get rocked. It's the best way to get back to your feet, but guys like Charles and Aljo have really mastered jumping on that offence immediately and making it a very poor idea. Also, to say Gaethje has 0 bjj is inaccurate. Its a criticism I've had of D1 guys for years. Khabib and other grapple heavy fighters capitalized on it too. It's hard to undo years of wrestling especially when you get rocked. I think you forget there are payscales for title holders in both fight purses and in sponsorship dollars. It's just an excuse to pay the fighters more money. And if they crown an interim champ in February, when would they be ready to actually defend it? I feel like I’ve said this 1000 times, but here it is again: If the very first fight an interim champ has is to unify the belt, then you didn’t need an interim champ.
The point of an interim champ is to have someone to defend a title while the actual champ is out for an extended period of time, not to have some PPV main event placeholder fight.

Because Dana loves handing out interim belts ?What?
Why would LW need an interim?
Whyyyyyyyyy????
