Xbox Official Xbox thread

That seems like an odd strategy. Where’s the incentive to upgrade then. I have both a base PS4 and a One S. Where’s the incentive for me to upgrade to a Series X as opposed to a PS5 if Microsoft doesn’t care if I upgrade? If anything I’m arguably better off selling my One S and then maybe buying a used One X to hold me over for the next couple of years.

Well I mean Xbox has stated something about not caring about how many consoles they sell. So maybe they aren't joking about that.

I find it a little bit odd that the Series S appears to be weaker than a One X, at least on paper. Makes me wonder if that will stop people that already own a One X from upgrading, on the basis that they’ve already got a console more powerful than the series S which presumably will be able to play games for years to come, so why bother upgrading to even a series X unless a person had to have the most bleeding edge hardware.
It doesn't target those users. The XBX was a premium device for Xbox users with a lot of disposable income. The Lockhart is after the budget market (probably mostly parents) who just want to spend less. Nintendo did great going after this market. The XBX is already a minority of the XB1 base.

Also, the expanded snapshot seems to put to bed the theory that Game Pass will be required. It offers full XBX support. It's simply the cheaper, all-digital version. It sacrifices horsepower for a $100 lower price than the (rumored) PS4 all-digital version.

Looking at the switch it looks pretty small.

I guess this can go here. "EA Play" is getting bundled with "Game Pass Ultimate" for no extra charge just in time for the next gen launch.

They ain't fuckin' around.

Wondering whether the X or S will support a lot of games using cross-play with steam users. A buddy plays on a self-built pc with steam. We haven't played together using cross-play because I usually just play solo campaign modes. This could be a good time to try it. Also does anyone know if many games are supported on cross-play with steam currently for the xbone? I have an xbone special edition that came bundled with the halo collection. Got it mainly because it supported ufc fight pass and have been using it frequently for games & apps.

So both The Verge and Unboxed Therapy put out unboxing videos with these consoles earlier today, and yet we still don't know what the precise gen/standard is for the USB ports or the WiFi networking card for these consoles.

FFS, when did so many of these channels become an outlet for consumer fetishism? They're fucking useless. Lewis spent his whole goddamn video talking about how he was surprised by the size of the console, and how it wasn't as big as he expected, then placing them in various orientations next to each other, and a PS4. There's already a billion photos of the console (leaked and official) next to other physical objects, or held by people.

And there really is some weird fetish these guys have with consumer goods. I've seen dozens of videos on these electronic channels where these guys open up a box, then spend 30 seconds sniffing the inside of the box like a creep rifling through a woman's panty drawer (Jay's recent video with the NVIDIA RTX 3080 comes to mind). They sit there running their fingers longingly up and down the edges of the box. They coo about the materials, design, and quality of the box. You can almost see them slipping into a fugue state...from the box. It's just a hunk of a metal and the parcel to deliver it, you weirdos.

This is why channels like Gamers Nexus have risen to the apex of tech channels on YouTube. Steve Burke actually delivers concrete information about the things that matter. He in inquisitive. He is critical. He is downright adversarial. He isn't a well-conditioned goat licking the grimy tin vessel of his modest ration.

Lol I saw that jayz2cent video earlier and he even promoted Gamernexus in the video because he said he wouldn't take the card apart but Steve would be taking it apart.

I don’t know about any other games but I frequently play sea of thieves with steam players

Streamers are 90% cancer and should be ignored.

I don't usually conflate YouTube Channel content creators with "Streamers", a term I tend to associate with Twitch and gaming culture, though all of these tech channels do live streams, now, too, so I suppose the shoe fits. Speaking generally, I agree, though I would put this figure at 99%+ for Twitch/gaming streamers.

Dolby Vision and Atmos have been confirmed for the Next Gen Xboxes.

Gotta say Xbox is winning in the features department, too bad their exclusives are lacking.

Also HDR10. We still haven't received any confirmation of support for these standards from Sony, and they're only a week away from launch. We already knew about Dolby Vision a long time ago, though now we're getting a concrete glimpse of what that means-- courtesy of @LuchaBear from the other thread:

News of the Dolby Atmos support largely invalidates Sony's attempt to hype their new physical "Tempest 3D Audio Engine", especially since the Xbox possesses such a profound processing power advantage.

Microsoft really is destroying them on every front: customer options, price point, payment plans, gaming services, processing power, hardware & software backwards compatibility, "Smart Delivery" entitling you to ownership of a game purchased once on both the Series X/S & Xbox One, interoperability with other platforms, streaming capability, and HTPC media device functionality. All except the one that, well, sort of matters the most to a gaming product: the games. Sony definitely offered a more appetizing exhibition for its launch library.

Apart from games so far these have been Sony's sole, modest boasts:
  • SSD: it's about twice as fast, but it isn't yet clear what practical benefit this will have apart from modestly improved load times based on what we know from the past decade of SSD usage in gaming
  • Universal m.2 storage expansion slot
    • Not faster. Hopefully cheaper (possibly also bigger storage devices will ultimately be possible for PS5 owners)
    • The catch: only devices Sony "pre-approves" will work, and my suspicion is the only SSDs that will have sufficient speed to run PS5 games directly from this external storage device will be equally expensive as the proprietary Seagate storage card Microsoft is using; however, I think this should favor Sony over time since SSDs that are fast enough will become much more cheap over the years, but based on its current competitive Gen4 pricing, I suspect Microsoft/Seagate will reduce the price of their proprietary card in concert to offset this, at least partially, as there is a drop in manufacturing costs
  • Tempest Discrete Audio Engine processor: but it isn't clear how sophisticated the 3D audio technology of this processor is, while on the other hand Dolby is known for their audio sophistication, and the whole point of a physical processor is to reduce the processing load, so Microsoft right now is positioned to boast superior audio output while still maintaining superior performance
  • Controller: touchscreen & haptic feedback (at the cost of battery life, and it isn't yet clear if it will work natively with Android/iOS devices like the XS controllers)

People can spam memes all they want, but Microsoft have done enough work to be taken seriously.

As much as they’re lacking on the game front (for now anyway) at some point all those studio purchases they did over the last two years or so have to start paying dividends. It will be interesting to see what will happen then.
