Official Women's Division Discussion #27

They can't deny Carla the next shot, can they? Would love to see her beat Rose again and have the SW title come full circle @Xuh

Namajunas/Esparza 2:

Interesting fights tonight Norma definitely surprised with her ability to circle out of clinching that was Fee s bread and butter, as well as smooth combos. I had fee 1 & 3, but it is what it is, fee missed her husband coaching too.

I thought carla could win but didn't know it would be a blowout. Yan had show alright tdd before but carla was sharper then ever chainging tds and control.

Carla also had the cursed white tee... did the curse die with reebok?

Not going to comment on the FW fight.

I was never sold on Xiaonan and this is why. When you're having a competitive fight with Angela Hill and getting taken down by a washed up Claudia, you're gonna struggle when the favourable matchups run out. A certain youtuber is probably having a stroke right now. Yan had no idea what she's doing on the ground and Carla made her pay for it. All Yan had to do was turn in and stand up, it's Joanna get up 101, but she just kept trying to prevent the non-existent mount from coming and leaving herself flat on her back where she couldn't do anything. I don't know who Yan's coaches are, but they're either Edmond level or she's the worst student ever.

Carla also looks like she scouted Yan pretty good. She knew that Yan would run in with combos so all she had to do was wait for that to happen and get a free shot at the hips. Either that or she'd throw a body kick which could also be caught into a takedown. Yan doesn't jab into range or control the distance well, if you can do that you force Carla to shoot from the outside where it's easy to stuff her (see Waterson or Joanna).

Guess it's time for the Rose Carla rematch. Rose hasn't fought a wrestler in years so we'll see if the rest of her skills have been keeping up with her striking. I will laugh so hard if she gets grounded & dominated again.

Cyborg vs Holm was good too, and it was at 145. Dare I say it, the first round Of Budd vs Cyborg was good too, the remaining rounds couldn't keep up that pace though.

Carla Esparza also won performance of the night! It'll be an injustice if she gets skipped again, as she just extended her win streak to five, capped it with a finish, has a win over Rose, AND called out for a title shot. Weili vs Joanna makes too much sense, it's the only non title fight Joanna is willing to take too... Just book them against each other, and let Esparza challenge Namajunas for the title.

UFC
Carla showed us fools what's up with superior wrestling. What a beatdown. Obviously should get the title shot v Rose.
Dumont was the more efficient striker. That's two in a row for her.

Invicta
Rodriguez looked great. Zappitella did it again in a split decision. It would behoove Delboni to throw more volume next time around.

Bellator
Enjoyed the Hawaiian atom weight Sumiko Inaba. She got a tko in the final round.
Harding was effective standing, couldn't understand why she kept diving in to Leah McCourt's dangerous guard. Got a foot in the face, triangle choked & it was good night Irene.
Hannah Guy made mincemeat of the gassed Loureda.
Smith put up a valiant effort nearly going the distance. Another clinic for Cyborg against a smaller fighter.

The Harding fight was potatoing on a rarely seen level. Janay kept putting herself into the clinch and getting tripped & thrown the exact same way more times than I could count. And then she somehow threw herself into a triangle and got tapped when she had the fight in the bag.

Loureda is just bad and Hannah Guy was almost as terrible. Hannah was trying to run in with the slowest most telegraphed punches from anyone not named Dandois and Loureda was still having trouble dealing with it. The ground game was just straight up horrible from both, anyone with half-decent BJJ would've snapped Valerie's arm in half and tapped her easily in the 2nd, but somehow Guy kept yanking from the wrong angles and Valerie kept putting herself back into the sub. This was even more painful to watch than Andrea vs. Antonina last week.

I think Valerie needs to cut to a lower division. She looks slow, and not really very powerful - especially for a TKD black belt. A weight cut might give some more speed, and snap.

I'd say more training, less instagramming. She was never a particularly good athlete to begin with and WTF style TKD isn't exactly a good background for MMA. She has no fundamentals and was literally fighting Hooters waitresses. What she needs is 2-3 years of serious dedicated training and fights at the amateur level, she ain't ready for the pros unless Smellator wants to line up more 1-5 cans for her to try & crush.

I think it only gets better from here.

Yeah, I guess you are right. :) But I am truly afraid that the reruns will stay unwatchable with the youtube ads popping up every now and then - those were not present live I think? (and yes, I do know I can stream my adblocked computer version into tellyvision, just stuck with the mindset of not wanting to bother with that kind of stuff in the days of smart tvs... so my own fault)

@Xuh Carla should have earned a title shot tonight.

Yes, verily! @Xuh my hat's off to you!

Nothing but Carla vs. Rose can happen now! Absolutely nothing!

(and Dana will no doubt book the Chinadollar anyway, boo)

Zappitella did it again in a split decision.

I would say that the judges did it again, not Zapatella :) I'll be butthurt on this on major level until someone reminds me of how Australia kept screwing Seo Hee Ham over.

Naturally skipped Bellator, but otherwise nice weekend for fights! But next weekend, oh, fuck yes! <3 <3

@Mittens
Fans will have to wait a little bit longer to witness ONE Championship’s first all-women’s card.

Oh, crap, I have missed that news completely, cannot understand how... oh, well, good things come to those that wait!

This DOES explain the empty beers in Ham's Insta feed though :D Was wondering how she was dinnering with brews with a week to go :D

LOL! Hope she stays sober enough to keep up her training.

Is it me or Dumont actually put the last nail in the 145 coffin?
With any luck, yes. Spencer, Dumont, & Fairn should all be given the chance to work with the PI to move down. I would even give Wolfe the option, but for her I do think it would actually be impossible.

Dumont reminds of a lot of Sanda fighters I’ve seen, she has ok footwork, little jabs or head movement, and she often fires strikes off in combos. I am not sure if it was a read by her team, but I liked how Dumont authoritatively shucked Spencer off in the clinch. Spencer has occasionally hit leg sweeps from a single leg, and hip tosses in the center of the cage, but most of her TDs come from the clinch. I have noticed if you stuff her, Fee usually engages on the feet with funky kicks and weird punches for a few minutes before reattempting the grappling.

I thought Carla looked excellent. Yan was a bit of stylistic gift, but Carla looked the best she has in years, and is the most deserving of a title shot by a wide margin IMO. I can’t wait to see how Rose fares. I think Whitman has been drilling hisstudents excessively on their opponents tendencies, so I am interested to see what Rose does.

I agree with Dumont

Also, i believe her base is actually sanda.

Edit: Wikipedia says she was actually a national sanda champion

I probably should’ve said other Sanda fighters, as I did know that :). After last night, I’m just glad her & Erin didn’t fight, as the size difference would’ve been a tad unfair.

Janay last fight looks like she slayed her low fight IQ demons but I guess it was just she fought a lower level fighter. Terrible fight IQ seems to have gotten the best of Janay again this fight. She falls for the slowest triangle setup ever. I don't think Janay had any idea she was being put in one until it was locked in for like 5 seconds.

I only seen highlights of the Sumiko fight but her opponent seemed to only throw a single punch that missed after eating a few. Maybe I am wrong and the full was competitive but Kristina looked like a punching bag. Which is normal booking for Bellator.

I finally got around to seeing this fight, that's a bit harsh I believe Janay was only semi awake there that upkick had her dazed af so it's understandable to not see a triangle coming when you're brain isn't functional.
