Official Women's Division Discussion #27

Good to see you're still around Severian...and are dealing with the restraining order (LOL Eater)

I almost picked 'em perfect. I knew Mazo's head kicks would be the difference...thought Eubanks would be too strong on the ground...and picked Hill (who arguably won). I forgot, however, how KGB loves to throw away fights. Clearly 1-1 going in to the 3rd...Lee starts to take over, landing often and accurately, stuffing take downs..."Hey, let's go for a wild, off-balance spinning back-fist that will allow Roxy to take us down easily and win the fight! Great! Yahoooo!" Her cowboy hat has better fight IQ than she does. Also, my Roxy-curse stays perfect (EVERY time I pick Roxy to lose, she wins. EVERY time. Finally, I acknowledged it and picked her to beat Murphy. And we know how that turned out.)

Fun morning of fights. Glad I tuned in.

Fun night of fights.

Kish came out aggressive. By round 3 Mazo found her range. Landed a kick up in the face & knocked Kish to the ground. Dove in & cinched up the RNC. Mazo has a laconic style where she finds opportunities. At 23 she has a bright future.

Eubanks put together a dominant well-rounded performance. Avila was no match for her anywhere.

Another veteran display from Roxy. Particularly in grappling and top control.

Waterson - Hill received the well-deserved fight of the night. Hill started strong, winning the first two rounds. Waterson showed heart in clawing & kicking her way back to victory. Both can be proud. They put on an exciting main event.

Overall I really enjoyed Mazo and Kish, they sort of fought how I expected, both are still a bit wild, but Mazo is lethal with those headkicks when they land.

Eubanks/Avila was a really fun competitive fight. Avila needed to stop pushing with her punches and relax cause Eubanks was using the forward motion of the flurries to complete her shots. Avila obviously eats a L, but she fought a legit Jiu Jitsu black belt who is also a physically imposing takedown artist. I have a felling she’ll back better than ever, and Sijara picks up a nice win. I like Eubanks at 135 a lot.

Modaferri Lee was fun and Roxy showed off all her experience well, she’s faster on the feet than Lee and better on the mat, so I was picking her and she eeked out a decision win. Lee seems really slow at 125 to me, sometimes I think if she’d move up, she might be better off.

The main event was also very fun, Hills TDD was really improved as well. I did think I was ironic that Hill called Watertson out for being a point fighter, then proceeded to try and outpoint her in the 5th.. but alas. I was happy with the outcome of this fight like the last Hill fight. I don’t think she is wrong to be upset about 2 split decision losses.. but I scored both fights against her when I watched.

The best part of a Roxy win isn’t seeing a grizzled vet come out on top yet again, it’s the butt hurt from all the usual suspects on here, YouTube, and elsewhere.
“I can’t stand her style. It’s like she’s fighting blind!”
No shit, Sherlock. She’s extremely near sighted.
I love when people from “striking backgrounds” come over to mma and get frustrated because it isn’t always the most technical and pure styles that win.

They seem to forget they are watching MMA. Example: one can technically criticize Shevchenko's and Anderson Silva's Muay Thai from a purist standpoint all day long. As far as MMA goes, who gives a shit? They get the job done in a different arena. Making stupid-ass apples and oranges comparisons is one of the way assholes masquerading as fans get to bash fighters.

What I like about Lee as a striker is she doesn't get timid against grapplers, she'll keep using her kicks & combos and stay aggressive instead of becoming a scared defensive puncher. The problem is she's still stuck in Invicta mode and has no concept of risk management, and once again she threw a winnable fight away. Interesting part for me was the way Roxy got the takedowns on the fence, she kinda let Lee do half the work for her while trying to escape. Lee would get impatient and try to force herself off the fence to one side and get her feet out of position, then Roxy would step a leg behind Andrea and get the easy dump.

Avila...needs work. She fought like Eubanks was some scrub who'd fold over and die after a good flurry, but Eubanks has never been stopped in her career. Not the brightest choice going ham and swinging wild.

Waterson vs. Hill was pretty much as expected, Hill lit up Michelle early with punches, then slowed down enough in later rounds for Waterson to get back into the fight with her kicks. Only real surprise for me was how poor Waterson's wrestling is. She had no idea of how to use grips for bodylocks or singles and kept trying for trips from way out of position where Hill could easily back step or hop out of them.

Mazo vs. Kish was the interesting one for me. Kish came in a lot more aggressive after her last stinker and got to Mazo early, but Sabina made the adjustments and started figuring out some counters. Mazo started flicking out jabs to end her sequences so that Kish couldn't rush in and swarm her, then added in her step-in knee to further deter the rushes. One thing I like about Mazo is she doesn't try to KO people with her non-existent punching power, rather, she flicks her punches out to keep distance and score points. She's not wasting energy by loading up and missing on them like Kish was. Also, reads. All the landed head kicks came off the same setup.

Fun night of fights, and the white shirt curse remains undefeated.

Was interested in the scorecard for Kish/Mazo. I had it 2-0 Kish but it could have been anything. Turns out Kish was up 2 on two cards. Would have been a clean sweep for the underdogs if supa-leegit mooey-tie champ Kish coulda just not get kicked in her friggin' head so much.

While Sherdog argues about "race", Hill quietly passed by one Cowboy in activity of late. Knew she had been busy as hell, but busier than Cerrone? Blimey.

Is she thought cowboy is fighting this week too. Very misleading pic.

That list has hill and vera, then 3 of the oldest men in the ufc.

So damn true! She has to realize there are levels to this. 135 might lack in talent but UFC 135 is a whole different beast from Invicta. Those quick flurries she beat people with before will not work vs ranked people in the UFC.
