Official Women's Division Discussion #26

Hmm. I wouldn’t have. Lee had almost no actual offense.
I'll agree with you there. The problem with the fight was neither did Nicolini. So I thought the first two had to be decided strictly on control. Which doesn't make for the most entertaining fight to say the least.

Nicolini vs. Lee
Entertaining fight. They used to train together at Evolve. Nicolini said Lee was rude to her there. Lee claimed 'we didn't even go that hard, it's not my fault her striking sucks.'

Using One scoring, Michele imposed more of her will onto Angela. Constantly going for submissions and spent more time in top control. Nearly every time Lee tried to break free and get it to the feet Nicolini quickly grabbed an ankle forcing her back to the ground. Nicolini demonstrated that she's a third degree black belt in bjj.

Lee's tough to submit or hold down. Tried getting the ground & pound going and threw strong elbows. Tired Michelle at the end with that triangle attempt. Bounced around and reversed position. This fight she was a hair too slow. Probably should have kept it on the feet as much as possible - especially in starting every round.

Really impressive performance from Juliana Velasquez.

Seems like Loma Lookboonmee will be back trying to get another IFMA medal at the end of July.

Was an amazing performance her movement was the best she's been vs the best striker she's faced Kristina was missing more then she landed by far.

Was a good showing for the bellator ladies overall Budd and Blencowe with tko's in 1st, Smith and Kavanagh was a banger, and even Ellen vs kallionidou had it's moments.

Time for Bellator to do MacFarlane vs Velasquez and Budd vs Smith.
Wouldn't mind Blencowe vs Rubin, and Ellen vs Jackson either.

Anyone have any idea why ONE has their SW champion fighting random FLW bouts? Not being sarcastic, just curious.

Yeah, I thought both Juliana and Julia were impressive in their stoppage wins. Juliana's striking looked sharp and her power didn't take long for her to bloody Kristina up. Once she kept backing her to the cage and landing bombs, it was only a matter of time.

Nice to see Budd continue her stoppage streak. Body shots are some of my favorite shots in MMA, and the one that set up her victory was nice.

Hope Chiasson found her passport, she's fighting Lansberg on the Copenhagen card.

she cant make the weight anymore

I don't know or follow her. Does she even do S&C? Doesn't look like it. It looks to me that, like Ladd, she can lose a few pounds just with a more strict diet.

I dunno do they do hard S&C work over there or just squeeze the fruit? Anyone know? Their guys look like Greek statues and that Chinese girl she last faced looked like a piece of steel compared to her.

She’s talked about having difficulty making the weight. Her next title defense in October is likely her last fight at the weight, which is not good for her, as she has lost two straight in the higher weight class.

145 is significantly more viable than its been in a long time, but it desperately needs to be in one place. Ideally not the UFC, and instead Belltor, as that allows people like Sarah Kaufman and Leslie Smith to help populate it as well.

Unfortunately, Kayla Harrison likely means that the UFC keeps a 145 Division for the foreseeable future.

Lina really impressed in her last outing, and Macy’s been on a massive roll since TUF, excited for this one. Macy is back training in Dallas, which I’m glad to see. Must’ve sucked losing your apartment that way.

Also noticed that Lansberg has alternated wins & losses (a la Markos) in the 6 fights since her UFC debut.

I am not sure how Kaufman and Leslie fighting at 145 does it any good. It is just a reminder that the talent level is so low that good(Kaufman) to average(Leslie) fighters from a lower weight class can come and instantly beat most of the fighters. Look at the transition from 105 to 115 to show how that move up in weight would look when dealing with a talent rich division.

I have not heard about Macy's issues?

And it is not as if Smith is a big BW. She has had at least two fights at 125 if I recall correctly.

My thoughts from last night.
Blencowe vs. Bell: Not much to say from a 22 second stoppage, great job by Blencowe.

Smith vs. Kavanaugh: Smith didn't look like she had missed a step after a two year layoff. Although, I am distinctly not a fan of her already talking about winning the title and holding it hostage for more money. At least the fight was entertaining.

Ellen vs Kallionidou: Ellen won it with her superior control. Wasn't super entertaining, but these ladies are 23 and 20 years old respectively. Very bright futures ahead if they continue improving.

Velasquez vs Williams: Wow, Juliana looked outstanding. She beat up Kristina until she just couldn't take anymore. Very much looking forward to Juliana vs Ilima-lei (After this, they have to make that fight right?)

Budd vs Rubin: Absolutely beautiful body kick from Budd that led to the ko. I also love a good body shot stoppage. I have also been a fan of Budd even when she was putting on Ambien style fights, so I'm really happy to see her starting to get some stoppage victories. After the fight she called out Leslie Smith and said she wants to go to Rizin and fight Gabi Garcia. I know which one of those I prefer to see ( I love a good freakshow fight every now and then, sue me.)

UFC tonight: I like Livinha to win against Van Buren. I think this is just a little too much too soon for Brianna. I'm not even going to attempt to predict Pena vs Montano. They have both been away from the cage so long I have no idea how that one will go. Ladd vs GDR will probably be decided by whether or not Ladd can get her to the ground. Usually I don't pay attention at all to weigh-ins, but man Ladd looked BAD yesterday. I hope she is rehydrated and ready to go tonight, or it could be ugly for her.

Maybe it's just me, but I kind of have the feeling that if Kayla wins the million in PFL she will take the money and ride off into the sunset. She's a big girl, and she seems like a smart cookie, I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't want to cut down that extra ten pounds.

I don't see it. She is like what Ronda and Joanna used to be. Wanting a legacy. To make her mark. Can't do that if she retired just as she hit her stride. If she won that I can see the UFC picking her up. 100% it would happen unless there was some crazy business decision that got in the way. Now once they sign her and she loses at some point they will do to her what they are doing to Cyborg. If she got huge somehow then they will do to her what they are doing to Conor. The UFC is going to UFC.
