PlayStation Official Returnal Discussion

Yea, I get why they did it but I wasn’t feeling it either. Somewhat of a pace killer.
Everything is a chore. Getting to items that are just below you and navigating the platforms are so annoying. It's so easy to fly off into the abyss.

Have you done all bosses on a fresh file?

You know, where you delete your old save file and start all over with no permanent upgrades. I'm wondering how bad that would be. No ether and no unlocked consumables or weapon traits, and you have to find all keys and unlock all doors in each biome. Sounds miserable.

I have not. I mused about it cause it becomes stale from time.

i have played with 2 randoms who i have friended. one was as good as I was and the other was waaaayyy better than me. this dude resetted his game 2x already. Most of the time I am leading and saving my partner regardless of whether i am the lead or not. but this dude was special. he moved better than me and knew as much if not more than me.. more technical. he even knew how to "bunny hop", something you you do by changing the button scheme. I will say i had the most fun playing with those 2. sometimes no discussions are needed when you are destroying enemies together.

i also am not a super fan of biome 6. it's also part of the reason why i run biome 1-3 way more than biome 4-6. biome 1-3 is tad more difficult and more fun.

Maybe after platinum I'll try it. That is if I can ever get these last 7 ciphers. They just won't spawn, it's so frustrating.

If I reset I'm going to miss the weapon traits the most. Just unlocked rapid spitter 2 for the spitmaw blaster and holy shit is that fun. It's crazy good now.

I changed my controller layout to jump on L1, dash on R1 and melee on R3 so they were easier to use. Then I watched a speedrun and learned about DMJ so I've been messing around with that a bit. You can really catch some air but it's awkward to do so not really useful imo.

So I realized that I have a second sub-account. Fired that up and started a brand new run. Can’t believe I didn’t realize it earlier.

Anyway the initial run I died to the first mini boss (drop down near the beginning). Almost killed it but couldn’t close the deal.

On my 2nd run and I cleared biome 1. Ready to retrace steps collect and increase my integrity before my fight with the boss.

Some things to note:
1. Forgot how awesome the layout of the biome was on the initial run. There are areas I never saw again after that first run. I swear to God that room with the floating orb had 10x more dead bodies compared to usual..
2. On the 2nd run and there is no gold (door) room. The 2nd run is a bit different because there’s a lot of cut scenes that occur for the first time (like getting the teleporter ability and sword) so I don’t think the gold room spawn at all. Oh well.

I’m still stuck on Ophion. Hate this guy and want to quit. Visual clutter through the roof and my mind is juggling too many variables, timings.

The enemy density is too high in this biome and ledging myself happens frequently with how dark it is.

It’s a slog for me to prepare and make it back to this boss every night.

Welcome to biome 6, eveyrone's favorite funhouse.

I like that boss actually. You probably figured this out already but you have to hit the big orbs and then the little red ones that spawn afterwards. Just keep moving from one side of the room to the other and most of the projectiles will miss you. And of course jump the purple rings since you can't iframe them.

Yeah you probably haven't seen half the game in years lol. I'm constantly amazed at how biome 1 changes ever since I beat the first boss (I was stuck there for a long time). B4 is like that too.

Just found the last cipher I needed in biome 3 by total fluke. In the middle of an arena fight I accidentally fell into a pool of water. The cipher was on the wall. Underwater. Lol I never would have looked there.

Quick update on my 2nd run from a fresh start.

Not as hard as I thought. Reached biome 3 and even cleared the star gold room (spawned pretty close to the beginning). It really helps knowing the game inside and out as I just ran it like I usually do. Clear the biome then the gold room, level up and increase my integrity as much as i can before taking on the boss. The only difference is i am picking and opening chests almost immediately to find the next weapon so i can level up as many perks as possible. It helps that i ended up getting almost every great artifact i could want for a run like this:

10% chance of repair integrity on hit
repair integrity by 2% per adrenaline level
autorepair on low integrity
immune to slow
grant 5% damage per 200 obolites
extra 30% damage to low health enemies
35% change enemy explode on death
20% stagger power
10% protection while alt recharging
Astronaut figure and powered-up sword

Almost double health, 3 silphium vials

Notes:
1. Lots of areas and side rooms i could not reach such as biome 1 areas with grapple, lava and water areas. so i missed out on some bonuses.
2. i was super aggressive with every single weapon i could find since i needed every obolites i could get.
3. managed to increase my protection to 30% and that helps a lot with damage.
4. the first 3 perks i listed practically makes me almost invincible. my health never dropped more than 50% during tough fights and then i would regen facing the scrubs.
5. biome 2 was actually quite easy. i killed biome 2 boss with almost 70% of my health. then went back and picked up a large silphium to fully heal me for biome 3. there were sooo many silphium scattered throughout the biome once i cleared it.
6. never got the pylon weapon.. AT ALL... it's been a heavy rotation of the carbine, hollowseeker, and spitmaw shotty with a bit of the sidearm. I did just pick the thermogenic launcher in biome 3 so i am leveling that up for a bit.
7. walked out of a side room and noticed a little austronaut figurine up in the corner of a tall pillar. i was like wtf!? looked at it, looked around the room and it disappeared.. i forgot about these mind fucks it used to do.. that was so long ago.
8. Not sure really sure but it feels creepier. biome 2 was brighter reddish for some reason. i dunno...

Barring some catastrophic mistake i am pretty sure I will clear biome 3. Too late and tired to continue. played on longer than i wanted but it was a lot of fun "discovering" everything over again.

which weapons are you using?

concentrate on hitting the light orbs on the left and right side. Don't empty your entire clip. the light on the left always pops up first, shoot that, then start working on one of the red eyes on the body, but save your last few bullets to hit the right light orb before reloading. stand as far back as possible if you have a long distance weapon.

level your protection as much as possible in your runs. The side rooms in biome 5 offer opportunities to level them up. don't even bother leveling up your weapon damage unless you have a LOT of obolites.
Protection and repair efficiency is the highest priority.. every thing (weapon damage, alt-fire cooldown) are bonuses. I never level up proficiency rate unless i am am filthy rich in obolites.

To be real, I'm taking my frustrations out on the boss but he's actually a very cool fight.

It's the runback from recycle to and through that biome. My goodness, it's hell. And I'm a Soulsborne guy who's run the Blue Smelter Demon runback countless times. This is the second worst runback of all time, IMO.

The starfish movement and spawn density are OP (especially given the floaty, underwater physics changes) and there's one or two minibosses that shoot those homing red-arrow projectiles at you. Dude, immediate suit malfunction on hit and I'm not hurt – I'm F crit, 1 HP. Ugh, so crap. Whole run gone. I've tried kamikaze runs as well as taking it slow.

Currently at 60h. Really want to beat this guy.

Biome 6 sucks. I'm a movement snob. Most of my favorite games have responsive, fast movement so the weightless mechanic is a huge pain in the ass. And that enemy that inflicts malfunctions can suck it too.

You'll get the boss soon. The ending afterwards is worth the grind.
