Competition time again.

This is my first more open comp, I'm a yellow belt and could fight up to Blue belts. In my other comps it's been yellow or bellow, looking forward to getting schooled.

So I came 1st! Won one by throwing for ippon, 1 arm bar and two by keza pins. Great day out!

ATTABOY! the mat doesn't care what color your belt is :)

are you european? here in Trumpland we've disallowed armbars in novice divisions for a while and we don't have blue belts past juniors competition.

Yes from England. As far as I know (in my very limited experience) armbars have always been allowed.

Pros from yesterday:
*Turned in more for techniques compared to previous comps

*won with a different number of techniques

*managed to bridge and shrimp out of a pin in my first match against a 4 stripe blue belt bjj guy.

*wrangled out of a triangle against same guy.

I'd spotted this guy before the comp, wearing a bright jiu jitsu rash guard whilst warming up so knew immediately to try and stall on the ground to bring the fight back up to our feet. Thankfully I had avoided the above two moments and every timehe pulled guard (about 10 times) I carried out my game plan

Areas to improve

*first match I felt very stiff and was completely gassed afterwards. So cardio and actually warming up properly

*didn't include any combination of moves entries I had been working on, still relied on one attack, move opponent around then another attack

*movement of opponent had improved a lot but this is still a big area I want to improve on. Especially as I usually tower over opponents and once I have my grips have noticed I can move guys where I want

*following on from above, always stand upright, don't let guys pull me down and break posture. Play my game

I'm curious about the guard pulls. Was the guy dragging you into guard during scrambles? Or was he getting away with some fasle attacks and pulling guard? You don't often see someone get away with so many!

Pulled me down with his foot on my hip a few times, then a couple times into his guard.

attaboy. as a tall guy i can empathize with you - new rules neutered our defense against shorter guys. they can spam drop-throws all they want and the best we can do is sprawl or roundoff. you'll be able to give these guys fits as you work your sweep game but it's gonna suck for a while because people are going to play so fuckin' far away from you.

tomoenage's really hard on taller people without breaking the posture really well because we've got longer torsos and legs than most people. conversely, it's pretty successful against shorter people if you're able to get underneath of them.

i don't mind BJJ guys cross-training but it kinda pisses me off that there's been an epidemic of douchey blue belts trying to enter tournaments and pull guard, especially since they'll enter the novice division. most competitive blues have better groundwork than 90% of hobbyist black belts, and most purple belts have ground games equivalent to or better than the majority of competitive Judoka.

if you can learn osotogari or uchimata and stay in a weight class where you're bigger than people you should be able to go on an absolute tear. plus you'll be able to compete a bit longer since you're not gonna be thrashing your knees with drop throws.

and if they ever bring back leg grabs...man...i'm not saying any schmuck could've beaten Teddy Riner, but SOMEONE would have beaten him by now if they were allowed to tackle or suplex their way out of osotogari.

They can still suplex him, we just need someone to get close enough and do it. We just have to continue dreaming.

ugh i forgot they kept the 'bear hug' rule in. also no 2-on-1 grip breaks are still around. blah.

but you know what i'm digging on?

"Wakigatame may be legally applied in a standing position if is completely executed in a standing position."

Yes please.

A mongolian most probably...

this is pure conjecture but i say the Japanese and the Vizer cronies colluded back in 2010 to stop the utter dominance of the Mongolia Judoka.

nobody could beat them with the old rules, so they changed them.

Judo should beat all grappling disciplines, not sit around and find excuses why they can't.

my biggest problem with judo is not rules so much as sucky training partners.

I'm gonna visit. another club tonight and see if its any good.

Yeah I had a crap partner tonight who stiff arms everything

haha the only throws I can really get consistently are sacrifice throws. But of course people tend to figure out how to stop it once ive done it to them a couple times.

Also sometimes I mess up the timing and wind up pining myself.

So I often feel as if im stalling or taking big risks.
