Official Judo Thread VIII

Okay, I need help, f12ers.

That nice tai otoshi (looked like a Korean tai o) in the latest British Commonwealth Games some months ago. I need to know who did it, or if you can, the Youtube link would work even better. I plan on adding it to my highlight.

Ippy, did you use a particular video which broke down Korean morote? It feels strange whenever I even try doing uchikomi of it and there isn't a lot of instruction available on it.

Nope. My coach taught it to us, though I think I'm the only one in my club who took a liking to it. As far as I know there's no English-speaking tutorial out there. Choi has an actual instructual video on YT, but unless you speak Korean....

Also yeah uchikomi feels weird. I only do nagekomi with it. I did a few last practice , and they felt pretty good.

Hmm...you are right, there is no instruction for Korean Tai O uchikomi.

I always did it like i was going for Ippon Seoi but I would have my forearm inside uke's arm (at the elbow) as I turn.

I would drill it like that and enter low with Tai O footwork at the end for the throw.

EDIT: you said Korean Morote, never mind!

Right at the start of the video. @ 0:06 is how it usually ends up looking when I do it. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't do it all that different from Choi.

Lo and behold, this even comes with a tutorial by Travis Stevens and Jimmy Pedro.

Just saw that video an hour ago lol but thanks anyway.

Just curious but does anyone know when the style of gi between judo and bjj started to differ? Such as the bjj gis started being a lot more tapered and judogis are more loose fitting.

As I understand it, BJJ gis are thinner/lighter because you have to weigh in with your gi on.

Not all judo suits are loose fitting, my fighting films, adidas and essimo gis are pretty tight. It's more of a European thing to have tighter fitting gis though.

Didn't know that about eruopean gis. I've done 2 bjj tournaments and in the first one we had to weigh in with the gi on but the second we didn't. This was the same tournament just a year apart so maybe the rules changed between that time.

Usually in BJJ competitions you must weigh in with your gi, so almost nobody is going to show up in a double weave monster gi.

Ah. What made you decide to start checking it out?

I'm decent at seoi nage and it goes off the other side so I'm thinking it would be nice to add to my repertoire.

I doubt I'll make the Batsugun but I'll come and train with you guys as I'll be in Tokyo in June.

Kay, if I were you, I'd only rep nagekomi for it, as uchikomi are very awkward with it. But if you figure out a way to make uchikomi feel less weird, lemme in on your sekrit.

btw, is it just me, or does it seem like a lot of drop throws are hard to rep uchikomi without uke falling into the throw?

so....Sherdog Japan Batsugun 2016?

I'll give it a go, I'm taking the session on Monday I think, so I'll see what people think of it.

I don't do uchikomi for drop throws, like for seoi nage I just do it standing and get my feet in and out as normal. It's only when we do randori or throw for throw I actually do the drop.
