Official Judo Thread VIII

When I first started judo I'd get reprimanded for sacrifice throws and counters because it's easy and you aren't learning good judo.

Don't fight for the back grip, take a normal sleeve and lapel grip and work on your forwards and backwards throws. No more than one or two each way.

When you start throwing experienced guys with those then start looking at counters and sacrifice throws.

RJ, there's two organisations in the US right? Can't you just get your shodan in the other one and they'd be pretty much forced to transfer it over if you applied for it, wouldn't they?

3.

But yes you can, I got my USJF certification, which I can also get a Kodokan cert for. I emailed a photo of the credentials to USA Judo and boom, i'm a black belt with them too. Don't even need to do another background check to boot.

Nice. Well RJ should just do that then, no?

One of the dangers with ura-nage and similar counters is that it is an all or nothing throw; if your opponent gets a leg in between yours then he may fall over you and get the score instead. To avoid this the throw can be taken in two parts; first lift the guy up with an exaggerated hip drive to get his legs away from you, and then throw yourself backwards for ura-nage. The first part of the movement can also be combined with Utsuri-goshi, let uke come down on your hip and throw him forward similar to o-goshi in the final part of the throw

He upset someone and they won't give him his shodan.

That's ghey!

RJ, you should get a shodan packet from the former governing body and look up the head of the yudanshakai. Call them up, explain that you have all the time in grade, points, and would like to get recommended for shodan.

Send your packet in to the Yudanshakai head black belt and wait.

Which org are you with now?

If you have a shit load of points, I would point (intended pun) that out to the head hancho.

This was the route I had to take because I had no place here to train and had all the points, time in grade, and learned all of the kata.

i always wanted to Batsugun. I know that's what the points are supposed to be for, but i'm not really jazzed on competing in Judo anytime soon. it's a weekend's pay and about another $1000 for me to get to any decent point tournament. i'd've played the state games but i split my lip open the Wednesday before, and i think i got points for reffing and getting certified and whatnot.

there's a club down here i could go to on Tuesdays, but it'd be like $50 a month. my BJJ club has nogi and i already pay for unlimited soooo yeah. plus, at BJJ i've done enough Judo shenanigans that I'm wondering if I could teach a bit? that'd be sweet.

good news though - Caique is coming to town next Saturday for a promotion seminar. ONE STRIPE WHITE BELT HERE I COME!

Fair enough.

Really getting into BJJ but I did some tachiwaza yesterday and man, I've lost a step. Arms dying from grip fighting and my entries aren't nearly as smooth as they were.

I don't just try doing sacrifice throws, but am trying to do throws like osoto gari, sasae and kouchi, but if there is oppurtunity to grab him around waist i go for sacrifice throw. Do you know any set-ups for them? With which throws they chain good together?

That's really what ended up happening to me. I live in Maine where there aren't any Judo tournaments. If I want to compete then I have to drive 4+ hours, get a hotel room, gas, food, etc. I just got old enough that it wasn't worth it, and I stopped caring.

Tani-otoshi goes well as a follow-up to o-goshi.

Yeah I heard RJ fucked someone's wife, and that's why he can't get his Shodan.

Come on we're all gentlemen here.

You can't tell me that you didn't administer a salami injection to the Shihan's wife?

You know, a good ol ride on the bologna pony?

nope, no ippon bone for Mrs. Walrus. never ever saw the lady, always assumed she was dead and that's why he was so grumpy.
