Multiplat Official DOOM ETERNAL Discussion

Some of the platforming gets to be a bit much in Eternal. I probably even rant about it in earlier pages. 2016 is much more straight forward
Most of it is easy enough but it just doesn't do anything for me, you know? And it's more the wall jumping tricks they have you do in between arena fights. I'll probably mind it less on a second playthrough. The combat's amazing though so I'm still liking the game.

I had the opposite reaction. I thought the platforming was alright on the first playthrough, but on subsequent ones I just hated it and had no patience for it. Much of it is just recognizing the path you need to take, so once you figure that out it's just tedious. I find the levels to be too restrictive and linear to be much fun on repeat, so I'm glad they added Horde mode.

I restarted my playthrough when I couldn't figure out the jump puzzle in the infiltrate the cultist base mission (after the timed gore nest you have to do a 180 off some monkey bars and then reuse them to jump up to a hidden elevator that will take you to a higher floor). I found the platforming to be easier the second time so I'm hoping that goes for all the parkour. But I agree, I find it more of a chore than anything.

Does horde mode skip all the missions and just do the arena fights?

Platforming doesn’t bother me at all. It’s there to emphasize the important of movement.
I love the added dashing and monkey bars in arenas. It's so much fun. But I don't think the out of combat challenges teach me much.

I learn more when I die because I didn't use the jump pad or dash out of there when I had the chance after getting outnumbered. And I'd rather practice the new mechanics on little groups of fodder as I explore the level. It's easier to groove your muscle memory that way.

Yeah, Horde mode is just a series of arena fights where you start with a limited arsenal and earn weapons as you progress. Kind of like an extended slayer gate.

I still can't get used to chainsawing. That's what I need more practice doing. After 2016 my brain naturally wants to preserve fuel for emergencies and it's so hard to do the opposite.

you have to use it pretty much as soon and as often as you can.

It changes the dynamic of playing so much that I cant go back to the 2016 one,and i loved that game. This is like that game on cocaine.

I haven't found those weapons yet but good to know.

He also mentions comboing sticky bombs and precision bolt, both of which I have now so I should start practicing with that.
Yea the double shotgun is gonna be your defaul all purpose weapon because the flaming grappling hook yields armor pickups and that is gonna keep you alive in rough situations. It all seems overwhelming and complicated at first but it actually becomes second nature

I really hope I can get the hang of the loop because I'll play the shit out of this game.

2016 is just a pure play of awesome though. From the first scene to the last all you do is fight demons. It's a masterpiece. I love the tone too so I'll probably keep playing it.

I hear ya. Everything is more frantic and you move faster too. The higher skill ceiling is great for replayability as well.

Logged back on and that boss still sucks cock. Of course I've long forgotten the controls and haven't played in 2 years but still expected to get it first try
