I’ve seen them counting down on Twitter almost every day for the past five days or so.It's eerily quiet for the DLC to be so close, not even 24 hours away at this point. Almost feels like they're trying to spring it on us by surprise.
I think at the very least, Eternal is far more fleshed out. DOOM 2016 was excellent, but its combat also lacked depth and was horribly balanced later on (the Super Shotgun being a prime example; that thing was absurdly cheesy when fully upgraded). Eternal actually forces you to mix up your arsenal from start to finish and places far more emphasis on resource management. It also features a much more challenging array of enemies, and asks you to deal with them more intelligently (many of them have "weakpoints" that can be destroyed to cripple them, for example).Do you guys think it’s better than the last one? I liked the last one but couldn’t ever get around to finishing it, just lost interest. I’ve actually already downloaded it on gamepass but I have such a huge backlog I haven’t gotten around to trying it out. I’ve read a lot of conflicting reviews and I don’t have as much time as I’d like to invest in just playing whatever. I’m way too busy playing through all the old splinter cell games I already beat 10 years ago or whenever they came out.
Thanks, I will def check it out. I appreciate the lengthy response.I think at the very least, Eternal is far more fleshed out. It's a much, much more difficult game overall in my opinion, and holds up better than 2016 in the long run since it doesn't devolve into a bunch of late-game arena battles that have you cheesing the same 2 or 3 weapons over and over again versus simplistic enemies. The Marauder alone makes this truer than ever. 2016 has nothing that even holds a candle to him, and once he arrives the game is never quite the same!
I can understand why some people prefer 2016. It's more accessible and asks less from players, so you can turn your brain off and just mow down hordes of demons without too much trouble. Eternal, on the other hand, absolutely demands that you master its layers of mechanics (from resource management to weakpoints and beyond), else you'll be slaughtered time and time again. In short: 2016 is fun for mindless ripping and tearing. Eternal is for pushing yourself to the absolute limits, especially at Ultra-Violence and above. You won't find a more challenging campaign in a big-budget FPS, I can promise you that.
Incredibly well said and perfect description of the differences between 2016 & Eternal.I think at the very least, Eternal is far more fleshed out. Can’t wait, been playing a bit so my mechanics aren’t too rusty.I knew the DLC would be really tough, but I'm not quite sure I expected this. The first level is just as hard as anything Eternal ever threw at you, even taking into account the Slayer gates. It's fucking insane.
I'm honestly not quite sure what they were thinking making this a stand-alone expansion. It's far too difficult and complex for a newcomer to just dive right into without having first gone through the base game and learned the mechanics one at a time. It doesn't even make the slightest effort to "re-explain" any of the mechanics, either, or ease you in. It just starts throwing some of the toughest enemies at you from the first battle onwards. The first level is surprisingly long, too. According to Steam it took me over 2 hours to beat (granted I explored and found all the secrets/did all the side stuff, but still).
Yeah, I don't think there's any way I could survive on Nightmare unless I really practiced. I started off rusty as hell on UV and lemme tell ya, it whipped my ass into shape in no time flat! Can’t wait, been playing a bit so my mechanics aren’t too rusty.
You playing on UV?
