Multiplat Official Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Discussion

From what I read the lip syncing is tied to the English Language not sure how much that matters to you.

I thought I was crazy or something. I don't even know when it's saving or not. Very weird system hopefully they quickly patch in a manual save.

I'm just under 2 hours in and I'm really enjoying it so far. I like the way they are telling the story\lore of the world around you. The whole prologue and just after it was amazing as hell. The story is starting off very strong. I saw someone say these devs out sqaureenix'd, square enix which I thought was dumb. Playing it now though I can see what they mean. The story and everything just feels very much like a very good FF story\world.

Also not really a soundtrack guy by man it's incredible in this game.

I saw a knackered Eiffel Tower and the Arc De Triomphe split in half, so I thought that the French language would be better for it. I don't regret it so far. Voice acting has been good. Only thing is sometimes the subtitles come too thick and fast and can be camoflaged by the backdrop.

I felt the same about Yakuza. Hearing the word "san" being used in English so frequently made it seem inauthentic.

Based on my first few hours in the game, I think that the story has been excellent. Really moving in a cinematic world.

I bet everyone is happy about that "Oblivion" shadow drop, except these guys. LOL.

They got done dirty. Get a nice clean window of a release date, and then BAM, a game people have been begging for for over a decade gets thrown in your face from outta nowhere.

Kind of reminds me of Mistborn a little bit. In that book you had a team that was on a mission to take down the lord ruler. In reality when they succeeded they made the world more chaotic. I’m thinking the paintress may not actually be bad but more of a necessary balance to the universe and the guy played by Andy Serkis understands this. My prediction is paintress won’t be the final boss but perhaps someone you fight in the middle of the game or two thirds into the game. No idea, just some speculation. I’m not going to post any further until I finish the game but I’ll come back and give a mini review. I’m so scared of getting spoiled. Doesn’t seem like the type of game you want to discuss until it’s finished.

I'm still running through Act 1.

The game can be quite unforgiving. Attacks aren't easy to read at times.

I'm hoping that there is a warning for the end of Act 1.

I also may have to backtrack and hit that cave. I don't want to miss anything.

I don't really watch this guy because it seems like he's depressed and hates gaming but this guy named Luke on youtube loved it. Said it was damn near perfect. He also said it's a very spoilable game and that there are several pictures alone that can spoil it for you. Tonight I'm fully diving in since I found out my wife picked up a shift tonight. I'll be tired as hell since I woke up at 5am to train but I'm going to play this damn near all night and I'll drink coffee to power through.

I was shocked at how hard it was at the start already. I was hitting my parries thankfully (which fill so damn satisfying) but when you don't the damage you take is pretty big. Which is a good thing I want the parries/dodge to be an important part of the game otherwise there's no point. Wish there was a difficulty trophy also.

I took a stab at the cave and got wiped. I'm wondering if it's something to go back to at a later date.

Parrying is really satisfying but success is rare for me. I also wiped several times at a boss because of something that seemed like it was supposed to be jumped along with, but I was supposed to dodge instead.

It's still really good, but it's also quite intense, so I'm not gorging on it like I would with a Yakuza game.

I am liking the game a lot. Everything has been so well done.

The only big thing I don't like is the parry and dodge mechanics. They feel way more punishing than rewarding. Mix that in with. Ot just being able to retry a battle, I am pretty frustrated trying to do bosses or Special monsters

Do you mean like if you don't time the parry/dodge properly you get punished heavily? If so it kind of has to be that way or what's the point of having it in the game. It's actually one thing I hate about games where they have some sort of unique mechanic but the game is so easy it's not even necessary to use it.

The manual saving and not being able to retry after losing is very weird though.

Well, I'm just past the tutorial, and it was the best introduction to a JRPG in a loooong time. Usually, these games start so incredibly slow. There's a bit of that in the intro, but it gets going pretty quickly. Very unique world that doesn't really borrow from much, other than maybe "Logan's Run". The world design is spectacular. I literally caught myself with my jaw hanging open just walking around the first real area after the intro. Haven't done that in a while.

The battle system seems pretty cool, although I'm not sure how much I'll like it as time goes on. Those parries are tricky, and I'm getting kind of tired of every game focusing on parrying as a main defense. Dodging is a bit more forgiving at least. The overall combat is very fun, though. Doesn't re-invent the wheel, but it has enough tweaks and feels fresh for a JRPG system. Seems pretty deep too.

Anyways, this one is definitely worth a look.

I’m a few hours in and it’s absolutely amazing. This is exactly the kind of experience — story, gameplay, and aesthetics — that a modern Final Fantasy should offer, unlike XV and XVI.

What’s even more impressive is that the studio was only founded in 2020, and they transitioned from Unreal Engine 4 to 5 mid-development. Despite that, a team of just 30 people managed to deliver this game. Maybe other developers could take some notes.

Currently 11 hours in really enjoying it. Love the combat it's really satisfying when you hit all those parry and win without getting hit. Did it to few of the bosses I've fought

Yeah, it's pretty crazy that this is considered a AA game. The only corner cutting I've really noticed are some stock animations for NPC's and lip syncing being pretty bad outside of pre-rendered cut scenes. Usually with AA games, you can immediately tell where they didn't necessarily have all the tools, time and money to fully realize their vision. Not here. This is a AAA game with a AA price tag.

I figure it's gonna become more and more common for smaller studios to produce this level of quality, as the technology gets cheaper and easier to use for everyone. Not to mention what AI can potentially do for games and game development. The big boys better watch out.

About 8 hours in and it’s just getting better and better. The parrying is easy most of the time but some enemies can be tricky.

It's nice to have this in my back pocket. I'm too addicted to Oblivion atm, been on a big Bethesda kick the past couple of weeks, but your thoughts on this are the ones I wanted to hear about, being a big fellow JRPG fan.

How's the world map? Is it like some of the classics, where you'll get a vehicle or something? I heard something about healing and rest spots being like Souls-like bonfires and estus flasks? Do enemies respawn after you rest, Do you see all the enemies before battles?

If you could compare this to different games, what comes to mind first?

I heard this is easily spoilable too, so I've severely limited my exposure to it.

I really like you can really do whole bunch of builds with the right pictos. I'm going to try a suicide bomber got couple picos that will let me try it

Yep world map has a vehicle. Souls like resting and enemies do respawn but you can avoid them easily also. You see the enemies and can initiate combat with a preemptive strike.

The combat reminds me of super Mario rpg and shadow hearts in the sense that you are very active in battles. It’s not just pick moves and watch it play. It’s also very deep with lots of options. I’m sure there will be a meta sooner or later but I’m not looking up shit on my first play through. Atmosphere is just very much like a final fantasy game.

Yea I heard just pictures can ruin it.

The layers of the onion reveal themselves constantly. This is probably the best JRPG I've played since "Persona 5". I'm loving the "Dark Souls" hybrid as well. That "bonfire" mechanic just works, and now that this game has done it, I bet you see many more JRPG's implement it. No more "Tent" items. No more healing your party with thousands of potions in between fights. You get what are essentially "Estus Flasks" that you can use sparingly and strategically to heal your entire party, if you're a ways from a "bonfire". That system alone, is so revolutionary for JRPG's. Completely eliminates the needless busy work of going through menus to heal your party with items. The whole "item" system in general is great.

Only thing I want from it, is a "sparring" mode for enemies that have already been discovered. I don't mind the parry/dodge system, but It's a bit hard to get the timing down of their attacks in such a short window of time, and by the time you've gotten used to them, you're moving on to another zone with a fresh batch of enemies that have different attack patterns.

Oh', and mini-maps. Mini-maps are pretty essential in a JRPG. You never know where the hell you're actually supposed to be going in this game. It's just pick a path, but I'd like a map to show me the non-essential paths. Every time I go down a path, I'm wondering if it's the main path and if I'm gonna miss a bunch of shit.
