Multiplat Official Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Discussion

The layers of the onion reveal themselves constantly. This is probably the best JRPG I've played since "Persona 5". I'm loving the "Dark Souls" hybrid as well. That "bonfire" mechanic just works, and now that this game has done it, I bet you see many more JRPG's implement it. No more "Tent" items. No more healing your party with thousands of potions in between fights. You get what are essentially "Estus Flasks" that you can use sparingly and strategically to heal your entire party, if you're a ways from a "bonfire". That system alone, is so revolutionary for JRPG's. Completely eliminates the needless busy work of going through menus to heal your party with items. The whole "item" system in general is great.

Only thing I want from it, is a "sparring" mode for enemies that have already been discovered. I don't mind the parry/dodge system, but It's a bit hard to get the timing down of their attacks in such a short window of time, and by the time you've gotten used to them, you're moving on to another zone with a fresh batch of enemies that have different attack patterns.

Oh', and mini-maps. Mini-maps are pretty essential in a JRPG. You never know where the hell you're actually supposed to be going in this game. It's just pick a path, but I'd like a map to show me the non-essential paths. Every time I go down a path, I'm wondering if it's the main path and if I'm gonna miss a bunch of shit.
There is a way to know if it's the main path the main path Will always be lit up with some kind of light usually with lamps. It actually makes sense why there is no mini map for the areas you are on a expedition and no as ever come back from expedition

I know it fits with the lore but I do agree it’s annoying. I’ve been using the lights though like you said and it has helped.

Thanks for this. I had skimmed this post but it stuck with me. It's really helped me know what's the main path forward and what's a side area to find loot, outside the getting to the damn Gestral village. That was really annoying. Our characters would be idiots for not jotting things down, or leaving breadcrumbs. Reminds me of Subnautica, that was infuriating.

I wasn't planning on starting this for a bit, but man does it pull you in once you go on the expedition, first encounter was wild. The premise is really cool. Like @HereticBD said, makes me think of Logan's run with some Lovecraft nightmares tossed in.

The Souls-flask replenishing of full party healing along with items is a great fit. I thought revival/healing-type items at first were single use consumables. This game would be frustrating without it.

I love the graphics, art style, and colour pallet, makes it feel extra otherworldly. It reminds me of a mix between Lost Odyssey and Assassin's Creed unity. I just learned that this was made by a bunch of former Ubisoft devs, that's where the talent went lol.

The combat and story pacing is perfect, just flows. I love Turn based RPG's, but they can make me sleepy. I had to force myself to turn this off. It's so much fun tinkering with your build too, my OCD is on overdrive.

btw, Gustav is played by Charlie Cox (Daredevil) but was he intended to be played by Robert Pattison? It looks just like him, but looks to have Charlie Cox's facial expressions. Did he do facial motion cap? I recently did a binge of Boardwalk Empire, and watched some of Disney's Daredevil, so his expressions are still fresh in my memory. It's uncanny.

So, dodge, parry, and jump happen in real time in this or are also action-queued?

Real time. You can't move left or right, as you're stationary, but you can dodge, parry, and jump at will while in battle with the character being targeted. Sometimes all three are being targeted, so everyone will respond to the action simultaneously.

If you do either action too quickly, you can do it again and still get the perfect dodge/jump or pull off a parry. You're prob fucked though lol

Yeah. The battles are turn based, but you defend against attacks in real time. It's a bit of a "MarioRPG" system, where the battles are kind of a mini-game. Parrying is typically very tricky, though, but you get some nice counter-attack bonuses for pulling them off. Dodging and jumping have a way more forgiving window.

I figure if you've mastered something like "Sekiro", this game's parry system will be a breeze to get a handle on, since most enemies only have two or three attacks to memorize. The game's bosses have no problem one-shotting you if you fuck up, though. Thankfully, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of runbacks and it autosaves pretty frequently, so you can just keep fighting until you've got them down.

I finished Act 2 this weekend. Game is incredible. This is my GOTY so far. Still have to play KCD2 which I could see beating this game but as it stands this is my GOTY.

So far final bosses for both acts of this game have really made me work for it though and I even had to grind a bit on the act 1 boss. The second act boss was more of an issue of having to learn the moves and the boss probably has the toughest parry/dodge windows in the game so far. Also has more moves to memorize compared to the other enemies.

This is good to hear. Love the turn based RPG genre and this looks fantastic. Looking forward to adding it to the backlog.

I am 11 hours in and loving the game so far. The opening sequence and walk to the harbor was some the best character/world building I have seen in a long time. It was the perfect hook to get you invested in Gustave and expedition's mission.

Yea I love that way the opening was done. There was no long video\explanation of the world or what's going on. You just start with a guy standing looking out at the city and the conversation between him and someone else starts going. You have to put things together on your own from the conversations and events as they happen.

It was a natural flow of information. If you searched the city and interacted with everyone you could, you a deeper sense of what was going on and how they react to situation..Sophie was immediately endearing and pulled me into the story. The slow reveal that Gustave is there to see his lost love off to her death and why they separated was excellent.

Yep it was incredibly well done. I still would have loved it if they did the standard opening with a narrator explaining the world but it just felt so much better the way it was done. Like you said a natural flow of information.

Yep. What sets this game apart from most of the same ilk, is it's narrative flow. They wasted little time presenting the world to you, and after 45 minutes(and not 5-7 hours), you're all in. I'm only 9 hours in, and it feels like I've been playing for 30, but in a good way. Not a lot of wasted moments in this one.

On a side note, I'm wondering if they stole likenesses for the characters. The lead is clearly modeled after Robert Pattinson, but as far as I know, he didn't have anything to do with it. I've also spotted Sophie Marceau and Penelope Cruz. Could be a brain trick, like everyone thinking Ellie from TLOU was modeled after Ellen Page, but here, it's with more than one character. That can't be an accident.

Charlie Cox is the voice actor, so maybe they used him but younger and effeminate(french)

I very quickly picked up the sense of dread and hopelessness from it, then heartbreak and hatred.

It was excellent.

Found teammate no 4.

Any recommendations for where to allocate points? I'm not all that experienced with this type of game...

I'm honestly not even sure myself about the points allocation. I'm still trying to understand the best team setup. At first I was trying to think of it as a standard tank/healer/dps setup but that doesn't seem to work here. Seems like it's more 2 DPS and 1 healer. With that in mind only 1 team setup works really.
