Elections NYC mayoral race

I never knew Socialism was this popular in the state. Its not that surprising when people feel like the current system isnt working for them. Theres only one way to learn that lesson unfortunately.

Yep, he was a nasty dude. Are your ancestors from Uganda?
No, but I was born in '72 and Amin was in power from '71-'79 so our timeline coincided. He just happened to be in the news when I was asking questions like that as kids tend to do.

That’s the city. Remove NYC, buffalo, the capital district and it’s a red state full of hillbillies. Most of NYS is the middle of nowhere.

Idi Amin? I remember growing up and asking my parents who the meanest (worst) person in the world was and they would throw that name out more often than not.
He has some great gifs though

Not a fan of some of Mamdani's signature policies like the rent freeze and the free busses but he's also hinted at an "Abundance" agenda along the lines of what Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson advocate for, which is to say a focus on tackling government inefficiency and cutting red tape which are big problems in cites like NYC.

If he leans into the socialist stuff that would be bad I think but if he leans the other way towards "Abundance" that could change the city for the better in a big way.
What's wrong with free mass transit? Is there a better way to encourage people to use it rather than driving themselves?

Makes sense. I was born in USSR, so I never heard of him when I was a kid. Guess the communists portrayed him and Bokassa as the greatest men in Africa.

If he wins and does what the has said the city will go way deeper into the shit hole. More business will leave crime will sky rocket.

I hope he wins.

The transit org has no money and they are almost always in a hole. They are in charged of tunnels, bridges, buses and trains. I think the bus revenue generates around 500 million a year? Their transit system is very bloated and old. It's maintained by corrupted bidding and kickbacks. There is a giant unionized workforce. They want to use American engineers and construction but Americans are awful at managing public transportation. They just don't have the expertise. You can look at the barriers they built. The yellow barrier is 2000 each and each station spends about 100k on it. This should be a crime. https://pix11.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/03/subway-guard-rails.jpg?w=900

They don't have to make buses completely free but they can change it so it charges by stops or distance instead of a flat rate for even one stop. Completely free also causes issues like making buses a mobile homeless shelter.

You really have no clue what that would do? The amount of shit that goes on mass transit as it is, is insane. Make it free and it would be an absolute shit show of crime, homelessness, and drug operations.

Yeah there is, it's better service in terms of things like frequency and cleanliness.

If the NYC Subway system is already a hell hole, imagine if it's free.
If he goes ahead with the defund the police ideal then...

Only 5% of New Yorkers Voted for Mamdani

Less than 30% even bothered to vote.

I think it is more or less normal in terms of recent years. There is also a heat wave going on. Other major cities in NY state didn't crack 30 percent.

Ok, but that doesn't explain why you object to eliminating the charge, although I could imagine a better alternative to removing them altogether might be a special bus pass for the working poor and the unemployed.

Because removing the fee would reduce the revenue of the MTA which desperately needs it. Additionally, I feel that's good to make people pay for certain public services like transit because a minimum fee acts like a filter against anti-social people.

This isn't to say that I think the fees should cover the cost of the system or that it has to be profitable, the fare should be subsidized to make it affordable to take the bus, but making it free would hurt the system as it'd need to be subsidized further from other sources and could invite anti-social people who would make the experience worse for most people.
