As a huge fan of the mafia and mobster genre I have to say I really, really struggled with The Godfather. To me its way too long, self indulgent and boring - I expect to take a lashing on here for that statement but I've tried several times and I just can't get along with it.

I have a leg sleeve going on with all the guys from Sopranos, Goodfellas, Bronx Tale etc... my Tattooist asked me if I was having any Godfather characters added and I said "No" - he was taken aback and said its a classic but I just didn't like it so I don't want it on me just because its a 'classic'

There tend to be two quite different styles of gangster film a I would say, stuff like Goodfellas which is pretty snappy and deals strongly with the day to day lives of gangsters and the Godfather style of epic drama which is heavier on the slow atmosphere.

Agreed mate - I could watch Goodfellas and Sopranos everyday, but Godfather for me was just way too slow. I'll give it another go when I'm in the mood

I’ll never understand the hype for this movie. I’ve tried watching several times too.

Brother Idk what to tell you if you think the Godfather is a 'slow' movie. Stalker is a slow movie, so is 2001 (both are incredible btw), the Godfather is long but it definitely isn't slow. A lot goes down over those three hours. Lots of incredible set pieces, character performances, all with impeccable cinematography and an iconic score. I get that its slower paced than goodfellas but its a different kind of mob movie. Its like going to the opera.

Again really I think "gangster film" isnt really that great a guide for the style of films same as "sci fi" isnt. Stuff like the Godfathers or Once Upon A Time In America are just very different kinds of films to Goodfellas same as Stalker or even Blade Runner are very different films to say Nolan sci fi thrillers.

The demise of the "epic gangster drama" though is definitely a sad thing as post Godfather it was considered THE gold standard for great cinema for a couple of decades.

Tintin the animated series was quite disappointing rewatching it.

I am baffled by these thread sometimes. Braveheart, Gladiator, The Godfather, Casino? WTF....these were great then and great now. You can argue that some were better than others, but they are quality movies. The movies that don't hold up are the ones that actually were always bad, we just loved them anyway due to the genre or star. Van Damme and Seagal movies are awful. Total cheese fests, but back then we loved them. Many of the 2nd tier movies (not the Rockys, Predators, Terminators) from Stallone and Arnold were pretty bad too on rewatch.

You've just inspired me to make it a weekend watch - thank you! I'll give it another go - the majority of people can't be wrong, right? I need to view it from a different perspective

Not a movie but Twin Peaks is massively overrated. The first 1/3 of the show is awesome. The last 2/3 is nonsensical dogshit.

I think the first season being much better than the second is pretty universally agreed on.

First season is mostly Lynch and Frost. second season is trying to run it like a regular network show with others writing and directing cranking out 20 episodes.

Casino gave us the GOAT explosion effects imo

I was also including the new season where it just is absolute crap
