Nintendo Nintendo Megathread, v.6: Switch 2 Edition

Brand new Katamari game! Holy fucking shit. I am ecstatic. Never thought it would happen. There’s an Apple Arcade game but never expected to get something else on consoles that’s different

Why I jumped on the Switch 2 at launch. With this unstable moron in office, the prices of almost anything can swing wildly.

So I got the physical version of THPS 3+4 a few days ago..

I pulled my Switch 2 out of the dock, excited to pop in the cartridge. Opened up the case and found... a piece of paper with a code on it.

SMH
Expect that for pretty much all third party Switch 2 games.

This is going to remain pretty much a first party machine for me.

What's weird is that Target, Gamestop, etc. have these vouchers for Nintendo eshop credit and for full games in gift card type packaging.

Why go through the trouble of putting a voucher in a game case if the other option is already being used?

From my understanding the only differences are that the game cards can be played offline and that you can play them on another Nintendo account.

Xbox is getting less ports because they don’t really buy games and seem to be focusing digital next gen. Nintendo is putting downloads in physical cases. Just kind of funny that PlayStation is somehow the last of the big three to have games on the disc and have a lot of variety of both AAA and indie titles. Was reading how Cronos The New Dawn will only be available physically on the PS5. Just wild how fast things changed

Ok

Well FWIW THPS 3+4 plays well on the system. There's a little bit of slowdown when you first load up a level but it only last like 5 seconds, then it goes away. If you retry the same level there's no slowdown at all.

This is the kind of game I think is perfect for playing on the go. I have no intentions of making Switch 2 my main system, but certain kinds of games are better suited for it, IMO.

Been juggling a few games so I haven't beaten Bananza yet but I can definitely see why people rank it as one of the best games of the year. It certainly is really fun destroying a bunch of stuff. I think it's not quite a masterpiece like some say because it lacks the traditional platforming that I crave and has a bit too many bananas for my liking. I think Mario 64 did it better with having less but each one felt more rewarding. Other than those two flaws I'd score it like a 9 out of 10 so far and I'm probably a little over half way done.

I did end up getting Kirby back from my brother. He actually finished it and returned it to me because he's not going to buy a Switch 2 for some time. I'm looking forward to replaying the entire game in 60 FPS and upgraded visuals. The added content looks nice too.

Last, if anyone is looking for something different to play on their Switch I recommend giving this demo a try. It shows some promise and I may pick it up at some point next year. Some people say they're getting sick of this visual style but I love it. I'd like to see Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger made in this manner. Anyway, this title reminds me a bit of Zelda, Cat Quest, and Secret of Mana all rolled into one.

I saw an article recently saying you're now renting Nintendo games, not owning since they could just not let you have them anymore and you're left with that code paper.

Finished up Donkey Kong, what an amazing game. This is Nintendo operating at their peak. The level of creativity you have in collecting, exploring, and platforming is so good. The controls and impeccable, the graphics and art direction are beautiful (it seriously rivals his look in the new Mario movie). Then introducing all the different Bananza powers just adds so many extra layers. The game loop is incredibly addictive, I just wanted to keep searching for more and more.

Obviously story is as shallow as a pond but the characters were still enjoyable and there were some fun surprises.

Loved just about everything about this. As good as Odyssey is, this team has seriously outdone themselves from that outing. Only minor complaint is that it really did feel a bit too easy and the boss mechanics were recycled too often but yeah, this is a definite classic that should be experienced.

I think the crystal dudes in layer 300 or so that keep regenerating if you damage them are hilarious.

You can punch them, throw stuff at them, completely destroy them, and they act all chill.

Wasn’t really sold on what I saw from Air Riders. Think I’ll just get my Kirby fix from the update to Forgotten Land. 70 dollars is a lot and by the time I get back from vacation Sonic Racing will be on discount and I think that looks better honestly.

Air Riders looked amazing to me, great sense of speed, beautiful visuals, much more in depth gameplay than the previous game.

Finished Donkey Kong up and I did really enjoy it overall but it fell a bit below my expectations. I was assuming there would be more platforming considering I've heard people hype this up as the best platformer ever. Odyssey was a 9 out of 10 so I think I'd give this an 8. I enjoyed it a bit less. I think what lowered the score for me is the poor camera at times, the absurdly easy boss fights that don't last longer than a minute, and the overwhelming amount of collectibles which I got of a bit tired of collecting. The major positive is the amount of destruction you can cause and how the map remembers what you did. I think that's incredible and I like that they went with this instead of just trying to make a game be as pretty as possible. Love the fact there's voice acting too. I really hope Nintendo puts more effort into storytelling with full VA. They certainly have the money. Their games sell like crazy so there's no excuse.

I still think Kirby and The Forgotten Land is the better game. I know I'm in the minority on that one, I absolutely love that game and I'm possibly more excited about finally getting to replay that glorious 60 FPS. Anyone else buying the expansion?

I feel like Kirby and the Forgotten Land is really slept on. Fantastic game, and I will definitely pick up the DLC.

For Bananza, I haven't finished it yet. I think I am one area past the elephant zone. I am still having fun, but I think it peaks really early. The very first area, where you're so free to explore and just smash through everything...it's incredible. Such a sense of wonder. As the game goes on, you get more and more restrained to force you into the puzzles and problem solving bits, but those sections just don't feel as satisfying as that initial experience. I also think that the little self-contained challenges are super disappointing. My favorite one was an early one where you have to demolish a building. A little problem solving with a lot of smashing. Perfect. Super fun. I foolishly expected to see a lot of challenges like this, but so far, I've seen two. And they're both essentially the same building.
