Nick's Journey to Peaked Bi's

Nice to see you're improving your squats.
Also, I'm damn jealous at your bench. You, Sir, are a true gentleman and bench monkey.

Yeah the squats are going on considerably well, however today I had to drop the weight...
9/8
Background on today: It was my first day of new school year, got 7 hrs of sleep as opposed to my usual 8-10. Then I went to soccer for an hour and a half, then I did No-Gi for an hour, THEN I finally got to hit the weight room.

Bench
Warm-Up
140.5x5 PR!!! hahaha
150x1
155x1 (shitty form, basically lost everything form-wise trying to get this weight up, was a bad idea but I couldn't resist going for it)

Squats
145x3x5
I dropped the weight simply to help me finish the workout since I was dead tired by the end of the day. However I believe it will just help me to keep moving forward next time.

I just got REALLY hungry just from looking at that pic.

Hows the BJJ going?

Good work in here.

I'm trying to drop a few lbs and that picture is not helping!

Really well, and I am beating people who have been at it longer than me because I try and make as many classes as possible, and I try to have the best work ethic in the room because I really am there to learn and become the best I can. My guard game is very shoddy, I never really get anything done from bottom unless it involves reversing. My top game is really where I think Im doing my best. My best subs are keylocks and arm-triangles, but I finally got an arm-bar from mount today which I'm very happy with.

However my stand up still is terrible, the MMA coach is a mostly thai boxing guy so I get alot of shit for not being up to par with my form. Im drilling both the hands and kicks as often as possible trying to fix the problem before I approach the MMA coach again, though it was him who approached me in the first place (I had a feeling my stand up was gonna be exposed).

Hows San Diego??

Nice! I had problems with my guard at first too and what really helped it along was opening it up. Working on your open guard will make it a whole new game. You'll get passed easily in the beginning but after a while you'll get the hang of it and start catching dudes left and right.

I didn't do much stand up and sucked at it whenever I did so I have no advice there.

SD is good. The vibe here is way different than upstate NY but I'm getting used to it. I'm job and car hunting now and hoping I can get that stuff settled in the next week or 2. Having a beach 3 blocks away is really nice.

my boxing coach used to say "them wrestlers are too stiff to be boxers"...can you get loose yet?

@BB Ill try the open guard next time and Im glad your enjoying San Diego, its a really great place to live

@JB Nope, and I get shit for being too tense all the time haha.

Took a boxing class which is way more tiring then a No-Gi class, then I moved on to the weight room with a grappling buddy. He cant do squats powerlifting style because he is so skinny he cant lay the bar across his traps again, and he cant press because of an elbow injury. So I had him do Oly squats, a bunch of pull ups/chins, and rows. What I did was:

Squats
45x5
95x5
151.5x3x5

OHP
45x5
65x5
95x3x5

Pull-Ups
3x8

it seems like you have found a good place to train, eh?
For sure, I'm loving the access to free-weights, and Im very happy with the gains on my squats, I should do more deadlifts, but I need to stretch more.

So I played soccer today in a rec league that I join for some fun. Its teenage boys so its always pushing and fighting, but I enjoyed some new found freedom since last year because I put on some weight and am a little more solid. I got to play the tough defender role and the kid I was marking wanted none of it.

Being one of the heaviest guys on the field is always fun.
Take this from someone who plays football (or "soccer" as you like to call it) practically since he is able to walk: It's not the technical game for scrawny guys it's often seen as. Especially in our case (teenage boys), at least one or two guys end up bleeding/hurt every game.

Im not all that heavy, certainly not the heaviest on the field, just have had some practice with manipulating body weight.

I like watching technical scrawny guy soccer, but like you said with teenage boys it just ends up being a scrap.

9/15
Squats
45x5
95x5
135x3
157x3x5 (was very easy, nice to lift BEFORE class for once)
Which by the way is a PR.

Then did a conditioning circuit with the MMA coach, some medicine ball runs/squats/sprints/etc.
