This is horrible. They want to erase history and Robert E Lee was not a bad man.

I cannot get on board with my fellow progressives on this.

Lincoln was a racist by definition. Look up his comments on 'the blacks'. But just because he was racist didnt mean he wanted blacks enslaved. Still should we tear down Lincoln memorials because he was racist? Same with Woodrow Wilson who was a great president.

Fuck Lee. He was a racist little bitch... Not to mention a traitor. Only mention if him should be a lesson in douchebaggery.

Robert E Lee betrayed America. If you betray America, you do not deserve to be canonized in our history. He belongs just under Benedict Arnold in history.

If I remember correctly, Abe Lincoln said that he didn't want to abolish slavery at the beginning of the civil war. The war wasn't started over slavery.

I'm glad the North won or we'd still have it today.

It was started because of slavery, the south was afraid that Lincoln would abolish it as president.

What Lincoln did say was that slavery wouldn't spread westward, that it would be contained...Which fucked over the south since congress would now be controlled by the free states.

South Carolina seceded over slavery (because the ongoing trend at the time was to eventually end it), and Abe Lincoln's main goal was to preserve the union, and secession is illegal. The south fired first.

So it boils down to it starting over slavery. It may have just been one variable at the time among others (the South getting screwed by the North over taxation without representation, etc.) but it was the catalyst for SC to secede, thus starting the Civil War.

So Germany should have monuments to Leni Riefenstahl because she was a good director?

Good for New Orleans. Why any nation would allow monuments to a bunch of traitors to stand all across broad swaths of their country is beyond me.

They're traitors because they lost. Everyone in the original colonies is a traitor to the english crown, yet they aren't remembered as such villains.

The south can have their war heroes like anyone else.

Do you think if England had won the 1776 war US would have been allowed to keep statues of Washington everywhere?

Because it would have been a strategic mistake not to?

Pretty much. Look at any talk of secession. People get all bent out of shape at the thought of losing claim to resources. They'll kill for them. Enraged from being jilted to boot!

Probably not. I wonder how long slavery would been around if England would have won.
