Being from New Orleans, I never understood why our city had those monuments. One, New Orleans promptly surrendered at the beginning of the civil war when the Navy just sailed upriver and trained their cannons on the Quarter and Downtown. The Union wasn't about to let the Mississippi be used as a supply line for the confederacy. Two, as a far a citizens still enlisting with the confederate army, New Orleans hardly had any compared to the rest of the south or even other smaller cities across Louisiana. So the placement of such monuments really had more to do with the city being able to afford their commission, rather than any actual confederate attachment to the city.

To that degree, most people I know in New Orleans, conservatives included, really don't seem to care about removal. We get more pressure on the issue from conservatives outside the state, and a few local politicians with higher aspirations who don't want to appear to be siding with democrats on anything.

And she has had to answer for that, and probably will more so assuming she wins the nomination. But I'm not going to pretend that her voting for it is the same as Bush leading the charge to invade on the basis of 'intelligence' that he knew to be false because of his weird messianic feelings towards Iraq and Saddam. Frankly, if WMDs had been there, history would judge him very differently and that (false) information was what Clinton and the rest of Congress voted on the basis of.
