Wrestling is just as important now as it ever was. NCAA championships are not as important anymore because most of this new bread of MMA fighter is turning pro in MMA between age 18-22 which is the age that they would be in college. Most have a highschool wrestling background that may go back as far as starting wrestling at 8 years old today.
The fighters that do not have wrestling backgrounds are RDA,McGregor and Werdum. RDA turned pro MMA at age 19. Werdum was a late bloomer and started competing at BJJ at age 21, won a world BJJ championship and world submision wrestling championship by age 25 when he turned pro mma.
Werdum has been training his wrestling through MMA for at least 15 years.
RDA has been training his wrestling with his MMA for over 11 years and has excellent takedowns.
McGegor has been training his wrestling with MMA for thepast 11 years at least.
JOHNSON-Wrestler
Born in Kentucky, Johnson grew up in
Parkland, Washingtonwhere he attended
Washington High Schooland was a stand-out athlete in track,
wrestling, and cross country. In wrestling, he placed 3rd and 2nd in state in his junior and senior years. Although he participated in track and cross country to improve his cardio for wrestling, he competed at the State Championships in both sports as well
Turned pro MMA at age 20.
CRUZ- Wrestler
Cruz competed in
amateur wrestlingwhile attending junior high school in Tucson, Arizona.
[8] Started pro mma career at age 20. Cruz is probably the best wrestler in his weight class.
McGregor- No. Pro MMA since age 20. Amateur MMA fights since age 18. McGregor started training wrestling through MMA at age 16.
RDA- No HS wrestling but has been pro MMA since 19.
LAWLER- Wrestler
Lawler was born in San Diego, California and moved to
Bettendorf, Iowa at the age of ten to live with his father. Lawler began training in
karate at the age of nine and later attended
Bettendorf High School where he received All-State honors in
wrestling and
football. Lawler was taken under the wing of
Pat Miletich when he was 16 years old and began training with
Miletich Fighting Systems as soon as he graduated in 2000.

ROCKHOLD- Wrestled
Luke started training in
judowhen he was 6 years old but quit upon turning ten.
[10]When he entered the seventh grade, he joined his school's
wrestlingteam and stuck with the sport all through
Soquel High School[11]while taking jiu-jitsu classes.
Rockhold tried wrestling for a local community college but he felt the sport wasn't for him and instead took jiu-jitsu on full-time.
[12]He experimented more with jiu-jitsu and began to find this gentle art complimented his long flexible body and style. After winning a few BJJ tournaments, he decided to ponder into mixed martial arts. In 2006, a friend invited Rockhold to train at the
American Kickboxing Academy(AKA) in
San Jose, California.
[12]His raw talent and kicking displays immediately caught the eye of AKA head coach Javier Mendez, who touted Rockhold as a potential future champion.
Rockhold turned pro at 22.
CORMIER- Olympian Wrestler
JONES- Junior college wrestling champion that took Cormier down.
WERDUM- Started BJJ at 21 or 22 became world BJJ champ and world submission wrestling champion, turned pro mma age 25.
