BJJ - 1 hour - Nogi

Nogi class tonight with Bruno. My shoulder is really causing some issues for me. Hurts to press, can't raise it above my head - so tried to focus on drilling some technique & didn't stay for the sparring (which sucks!). In nogi, worked on an inside leg trip. Worked pretty well, but needs work. also worked on passing open guard from nogi. Did open guard passing drills. Open guard is working reasonable well for me in nogi - sucks in gi.

Don't think I'll be benching tomorrow with this shitty shoulder. Also I'm in jeopardy of having to sit out the tournament on Saturday. SUCK!! Iced it tonight, will take it really easy tomorrow & ice throughout the day, hopefully it will feel better by Saturday morning.

My shoulder is still screwed up. So no bench, no chins, no nothing today. Gonna try to ice it throughout the day. Probably no BJJ tonight either. sucks.

In-House BJJ Tournament this AM. Participants were from 2 local schools, GB Huntington Beach and GB Arcadia. My shoulder is still a little sore, but did not affect my performance so that's good. I think taking Thursday & Friday off was just what I needed.

I'm currently a 2-stripe blue belt and I weigh 215 lbs. I had 3 matches, all matches were 5 minutes:

1) Fought a 4-stripe white belt from the other school. He's about 200-205 pounds. He got judo grips pretty quickly and almost tripped me, but I was able to execute a collar-drag to single-leg takedown. Actually surprised myself with that. I landed in half guard, and I worked slowly & methodically and passed straight to mount. This guy was very flexible & slippery on the bottom, however & he regained half-guard. This time I passed to side control and again to mount, where he regained half guard again. I passed again to side control and ran out of time. So I won, but to be honest, that's one I should have won. I saw this guys next 2 matches & he was pretty good, probably very close to a blue belt.

2) Another 4-stripe white belt - this guy is 215, same weight as me. He came out really aggressive, looking for a takedown. I sprawled, he tries a collar drag, I defended, and since he was on the ground I pushed hips forward & he stayed there & locked up his closed guard. I broke his guard after a couple of tries, and then passed to side mount using a technique from this week :-) From side mount, went to mount, kept everything really tight, moved to high mount & slowly worked for a collar choke. Didn't get swept & got the tap.

3) Third match was against another blue belt. We are pretty evenly matched, but he's lost some weight in the past few months & now I outweigh him by about 20 pounds. We start standing, I shot for a double, left my neck out & he locks up a guillotine. I defended, got my head loose & we're standing again. He pulled guard & worked for a long time to try to pass his guard. It was tough. When there was 1 minute to go, I was able to advance to half guard & from there I went quickly to side control & then mount. I won on points.

So I won all 3 matches, which was great, but more importantly I met my goals for the day, which were:
- Get a takedown
- Don't give up a takedown
- Play top position.

Congrats that's awesome! Especially the collar choke from mount! Did you use Trumpet Dan's advice!

Yes I did use Trumpet Dan's advice :-) Every single step - didn't get swept this time, which was awesome!

8x145 <-- 1 rep better than last week at this weight

Push Press

5xBW+35
4x1xBW+70 (296.2lb Total) <-- New PR

Dips
5x15xBW

Shrugs
12x135
12x135
40x135

Curls
5x12x65

I wasn't sure how the workout would go today, but my shoulder felt 100% this morning and didn't cause any discomfort during the pressing or chinups. since I missed 2 workouts and didn't get any deadlift assistance last week, I restarted week 1 of the 5/3/1 this week. The weighted chin was a new PR - but it was tough. You will see in the video that I had to give a 2nd effort to complete the pull. not sure if I'll be able to get 75 next week, we'll see. That would put my over a 300lb total, which would be exciting.

In house tournies are a great learning tool.

Thanks Midmo! Love the cheer pics :-) And yes, I agree - the in-house tourneys are great.

BJJ - 1 Hour - Gi

Worked on an outside hook takedown. this was good for me, because I can never seem to get this one, but I have been stepping toward my opponent instead diagonally. So hopefully that will help me get it. Worked on 2 new half-guard passes. did half-guard passing drills. I kinda sucked & got pretty tired. First time in a week I've done BJJ on the same day as lifting - it was tough. Plus my workout in the am was really tough.

I had 1 5 minute sparring session with really tough blue belt - he's lighter than me, but really good & same level as me (2 stripes). We start from knees, he gets a collar grip on me & then immediately lunges for the other collar while sort of rolling - he had a sort of baseball choke & it was TIGHT. Totally surprised me. I'm gurgling, tried to roll with it & eventually got to a position from the bottom where I could put pressure to straighten his elbow so I could breathe. Stayed in that position until his grip gave out. I tried to sweep, didn't get it, but transitioned to butterfly guard. Went for a hook sweep at the same instant he tries to jump over & I end up kicking him in the nuts. Sucked. We had to break for a minute or so, then continued from butterfly. I pulled half guard this time, eventually swept & got top half guard & then ran out of time. I was exhausted & called it a night.

BTW, throat is still sore Tuesday morning from that choke attempt.

5/3/1*, Day 2, Week 1, Wave 2

*Not strictly doing 5/3/1 for deadlift anymore due to the race to 450 competition. The programming is a bit different, but deadlift day is still deadlift day in the spirit of 5/3/1, except now its FUCKING DEADLIFT DAY.

Deadlifts
5x155
5x195
3x230
3x270
3x310
2x340

Speed Deadlifts
8 sets x 3 reps x 270 (90 sec rest between sets)

3 Circuits
- 8 reps each exercise
- 90 sec rest between exercises
- 2 minutes between Circuits

Stiff Legged Deads (135, 155, 155)
BORs (135, 135, 155)
Chins (BW)
GMs (135, 135, 135)

For the deadlift comp, I switched the programming to the Coan/Phillipi 10 Week Deadlift Routine. I went to this website: Tsampa.org: Coan-Phillipi 10 Week Deadlift Routine and put in my current 1RM (405) and my goal (450), and it outputs a 10 week program. Looks pretty good, and BTW, today's workout was INTENSE. Fuckin Awesome. Might be too wiped out for BJJ tonight though. My hands are sore...

That makes it sound significantly more intense. I approve. Also, good luck!

I'm really happy with my workout today :-)

I'm a little more happy about the photo but I suppose the workout was pretty good too. Keep it up! :icon_chee

5/3/1, Day 3, Week 1, Wave 2

Bench (Standard Grip)

5x45
5x95
5x135
5x155
5x175
5x205
7x230 (AMRAP)

Weighted Chins
5 sets x 5 reps x BW + 35lb (261.2 lb Total)

Bench (standard Grip)
10x135

Bench (Wide Grip - pinkies on rings)
10x155
10x155
10x155
10x155

DB Rows
3x15x60

Skull Crushers (done between sets of DB Rows)
3x12x65

Workout felt great today! For my regular grip on bench, I place my hands about halfway between the rings & the smooth part of the bar but slightly narrower. For the Bench assistance, I decided to try a wider grip, pinkies on rings. It felt surprisingly good - was much easier to keep my back tight with the wider grip. Also easier to unrack the weight without losing tightness.

Barely made it through the 5x5 with the extra 35 lbs. It was tough but I squeaked it out.

Will definitely need some type of recovery activity tonight. I'm investigating the Beach Rolling these girls are demonstrating. Its the latest fad.
