My ADD Training Log

I can't imagine living so close to so many dif schools. Around here I've been very lucky to be blessed with the people I have to train me/with me. But there I think the options would blow my mind.

Yeah, we're really fortunate. Its kinda crazy - here's a map TrumpetDan put together of BJJ Schools in Orange County & LA - Doesn't include San Diego:

Feel kinda silly being all geared up for not much weight, but my wrists are a little screwed up, so the wraps help. Same thing with the knees. Oh well...

I have basically 2 choices with in an hour. Luckily both are good schools. One is run by a Arnold's Absolute Champ Brown belt. The other is run my an ATT black belt and former ADCC competior. My first coach is a 6 time national Judo champ and a member or USA Wrestlings and USA Judo's devolpmental squads.

My previous best on OH Press was 155x2 - and I really struggled with it. Hit 155 for 5 times today, so that's a definite improvement:

Weighted chins, BW+55 (275 lb) today (lift starts @ 1:00 in...I need to make a belt that I don't have to tie.):

My left wrist & thumb has been giving me some pain all weekend. It started hurting doing grip work today, so I bailed on the wrist curls and reverse wrist curls. I'll try again on Wednesday.

BJJ - Gi - 1 Hour

1 Hour Advanced Class. Worked on double-leg takedown, then a closed guard pass by standing. Struggled a little tonight. Tired...my lower back hurts too...I think its due to lack of sleep. Dog kept me up last night...nothing like cleaning up dog puke at midnight & then again at 2am...

Maybe snoop dog needs to lay off the sauce...

1.5 Hours BJJ

1 Hour Advanced class. Worked on Double-leg takedowns & standing guard pass. The guard pass today was one I've seen once, but had forgotten about it. You stand & grab both pants legs. "Punch" the feet down to the ground, put your shoulder in the opponent's gut, head on/near the floor & flip over the guy's knees, holding the feet to the floor & keeping the hips stationary with your head & shoulder pressure. One you've completed the flip, switch your base, put your knee behind the hip, block the other side of the hip with your arm, finish in side control.

Followed class with 4x5 minutes sparring, starting from knees. Worked with a 4-stripe white belt once, brown belt once, purple belt twice. Did better today...

Some of the potential reasons I did better today:
- Better sleep last night
- Day class instead of evening class
- Didn't lift today

Deadlifts are fun :D I reduced the distance between my feet slightly (~1/2") and hit the groove a little more often today. I started with hook grip, but then remembered that my left thumb had been hurting some, so figured this wasn't a good day to try hook grip. Completed the sets with the over/under grip.

Was not able to do wrist curls due to pain in my left wrist. On Friday I'm going to try with a lighter weight.

BJJ - Nogi - 1.5 hours

Drilled several techniques: fighting for underhooks while standing, ankle locks, basic knee bar. Worked on breaking closed guard by putting your hands on armpits (elbows out), scooting back, standing, putting one knee in the guys butt, then sitting back & pushing on hips to force your knee in the middle & break the guard. Then worked on passing from that position. Did some positional training where you start with closed guard & reset if the guard is broken. That was interesting, because you couldn't play an open guard - good for me, my open guard sucks anyway...more positional training from guard...

Sparred 2 x 6 minute rounds, starting from knees. Got fucking OWNED by a blue belt that I outweigh by 50 lbs. That sucked. I have work to do. He didn't submit me, but dominated me positionally for 6 minutes. After that I rolled with another blue belt that I know I'm better than & of course I did much better against him. But I'm supposed to be able to beat that guy. Oh well, I know I have a lot of work to do on my jiu-jitsu. I'm going to try to keep going as much as I can. Mat time has to help.

Rough day today. Woke up this morning and my right arm was hurting from the wrist, up the inside of my forearm, through the ditch of my elbow & up my bicep. Feels like I strained it doing deadlifts yesterday. So I was unable to do pullups at all, and although I did set a PR on bench, wasn't as much as I was hoping. Arm was aching so I just cut the workout short. Pissed but I'll take it easy through the weekend - should be ok to squat on Saturday.

Freaking bummed right now - shitty workout & I'm really having trouble gaining weight, although I'm eating a TON. Over 4000 calories every day this week & finished up yesterday with 3 pieces of pizza, protein powder + 16oz of milk & 2 22oz beers before bed. Woke up 2 pounds lighter...WTF?? Gonna keep eating...maybe I need more buffets...

A bit of a sucky workout today, but I did finish it instead of bailing. Struggled with my squat form today. Videoed every set of squats & tweaked it as I went along, but just continued to struggle. My technique wasn't great on the 255, so I decided to do the same weight again instead of increasing to 285 as planned, and then 255 sucked again. So I won't be increasing my weight for squats next month, but I think I may add some volume of squats (5x5 or 5x10) on deadlift day so that I'm squatting twice a week.

For a warmup today, I went through all of the warmup exercises that were listed in the depth article on t-nation. Had to do some extra stuff to loosen up my shoulders, but I really liked some of the hip stretches.

This is my planned deload week for my 1st month of 5/3/1 in 2011. Good timing, since my wrists have been sore. Did not use wrist wraps today on anything though, since they're feeling a little better & the intensity was low (except for chins).

For SOHP, I just did my usual warmup sets twice each. For the assistance exercises I did 3 sets instead of 5.

Here is the video of the weighted chin. The actual lift starts at 1:25. Took me forever to tie the damn belt. I think I'm going to build a DIY weight belt for this so that it's not as annoying - would be WAY easier to just have a carabiner instead of having to tie knots.

I posted this in the chinup comp log, but will post here as well...I've been using an old BJJ belt to load weight for chins. It worked, but was a pain in the ass to tie & untie. So this afternoon I made a weight belt so I can load chins & dips easier.

I bought a prepackaged 10' length of chain, 2 Carabiners and a piece of pipe insulation. Total cost at Home Depot was $18 including tax. The dip belt on ironmind is $60. I used duck tape I had at home & ended up cutting off about 2' of chain.

I followed the instructions in this video, the belt's awesome:

BJJ - 1.5 Hours, Gi

Worked on an interesting guard-pull/sweep combo from standing. Cross grip opponents sleeve, grab back of belt with other hand, shoulder pressure, hook opponents leg with my inside leg, sit down & pull him onto his back, take side mount. Also worked on sacrifice throw as single leg defense. Worked on hook sweep from butterfly guard - lots of 1-1 drills working on butterfly guard & passing.

Sparred 3 6-minute rounds. First round, worked with guy who is a relatively new blue belt. I also outweigh him by about 35 pounds. We started from knees, I took top control first, worked to mount & finished with an arm bar, pulled guard next, locked up a kimura from bottom half, he rolled, I rolled with him & finished it from mount. Started form bottom side control the 3rd time, got to my knees & was working for a head-arm choke when we ran out of time.

2nd round I was matched up against a guy who is about 225-230 & REALLY muscular, plus he's a 3 stripe blue belt, about 8-10 months ahead of me. didn"t want to midget wrestle too long & he wasn't gonna let me start on top, so I pulled guard. h=He immediately jumped to half, but i regained my closed guard. Worked closed guard for a long time - he was more patient than me & after about 4 minutes passed to side mount. He went knee-on-belly to mount, but I was able to get my arms under & escape out the back. Reset worked my closed guard more as time ran out. Not too bad.

3rd Round was against another 3-stripe blue belt. I outweigh the guy by at least 40 lbs, but he's really good. This one was back & forth a lot - he kicked my ass in No Gi last week, so I was determined not to let that happen again. I put the pressure on from the start - it was really back & forth, lots of scrambles - I *almost* finished with a peruvian necktie as time ran out.

Overall a good class - conditioning was not a problem for me tonight.

BJJ 1.5 Hours - Gi

In class tonight we worked on a collar pull from standing. Grip sleeve, cross grip collar, step with outside leg & sit down on hip, pulling the person toward the mat. We then worked on a seated open guard with a collar cross grip and then executed the collar pull from there, combining with ankle pick or double leg, depending on how they defend.

Did some open guard passing drills. Then I made it through 1 6-minute round of sparring. I was tired about half way through this class for some reason, and was exhausted during the sparring session. I was rolling with a guy who is a little more advanced than me, but smaller. He kicked my ass. :( Tapped me with a triangle he set up from mount about 3 minutes in. So we restarted & I came out more aggressive, did not just give up top position, transitioned to his half guard & almost finished him with a cross collar choke from top half. Sneaky bastard worked a knee in for space, so I tried to transition to a head-arm choke, couldn't quite get it adjusted properly & we ran out of time. I was exhausted so went home & ate after that. Pretty much sucked ass today, but glad I went. At least I get to deadlift tomorrow so I'll be in a better mood.

Got a shitty email during my workout (why did I look at the blackberry?). Put me in a pissy mood & I had to stop the workout & get back to work. Got to visit customers today, probably won't do anymore lifting, but should be able to make BJJ tonight.

Nice Chin! You and I should have a competition for the messiest garage gym.

haha - thanks! I keep trying to get the camera close enough so you don't see all the crap in the periphery.
