My ADD Training Log

this log seems to have improved greatly in the last 30 minutes or so

give me a minute to think up a good reason why

Is it because of Calvus's incredible athleticism?

display_image.jpg

Or is it because of how much we can learn from his log?

hot_teacher_c.jpg

Or maybe it is because he is a fighter.

BJJ - 1.5 Hours - Nogi

Worked on sacrifice throw, then arm drag variations from standing & open guard. Guard passing drills with open guard.

Sparred 1 7 minute round and 2 6 minute rounds. Did much better tonight. Rolled with a blue belt first, the guy's about my same size and athletic, got a D'Arce choke and then an arm bar. Second session was against another blue belt, really good but smaller than me. We went back & forth, pretty even - I had a lot of trouble passing his guard, but worked from the top most of the time and managed not to get swept. Third time was against a purple belt, we went for a simultaneous arm drag, but I chained a single leg right after and got the takedown. Passed and went to side control, then mount. In all fairness, this guy hasn't been training much & was GASSED. I was able to mount & finish with an arm triangle. Even though he's out of shape I'm happy I was able to execute some techniques.

Good lifting calvus. It's cool to see that you made that DIY dip belt. $18 is way better than $60, I gotta get on that.

What BJJ belt are you?

Thanks man - the belt is great - make sure you take the time to wrap the chain & padding in duct tape, makes a big difference. I use Gorilla Tape, so mine's black instead of silver. The pipe insulation was less than $2, so if you already have a length of chain somewhere you're set...

I'm a 2-stripe blue belt. Probably have another 1.5 years at blue.

BJJ 1.5 Hours Gi

Worked on Collar drag from standing and open guard. Worked on some combinations - collar drag to ankle pick, etc. Guard Passing drills from open guard. My open guard is pretty shitty, so I need a lot of work on this.

Sparring, went 1 6 minute round with another blue, was progressing nicely, got to mount started working for a collar choke, based on TrumpetDan's $0.60 Average Level Gi Seminar, but got a little off balance & got swept. The guy passed to half, but I was then able to recover my full guard & start working again.

Next session rolled with a more advanced blue belt who is really strong. He tried to sweep right off the bat, I avoided, ended up in his guard & basically defended sweeps for the next 5 minutes. Every time I tried to pass or to stand he came really close to sweeping me, but I kept my balance. Was never able to pass his guard.

Rolled with our black belt instructor next. That was funny. I've had some success lately against blue belts when I'm mounted - if the opportunity presents itself, I can get both arms under their legs and go out the back door. Didn't work against the black belt. He sat on my arms, completely pinning them, then collar choked me. Had to tap with my foot :-)

Anyway - good session, might do a tournament next weekend.

1.5 Hours BJJ - Gi

Fundamentals class tonight, worked on standing headlock escape then armbar from the ground. Also worked on a standing guard break & pass. Sparred 2 6 minute rounds with a blue belt. Tried to get a collar choke from mount both times & got swept while trying to get the 2nd hand in both times. Second round I swept from closed guard straight to mount almost immediately & then got swept & spent the next 4 minutes in bottom half guard. SUCK. Got to work on maintaining mount while getting the second hand in. Lots of mat time this week, today makes 5 days straight training jiu-jitsu. :-)

Tomorrow I'll start Cycle (or wave?) 2 of the 5/3/1 plan for 2011. The plan for this month is to continue the 5/3/1, eat a lot & try to gain some weight. Bodyweight this morning was 215.6, so I've gained 2.6 pounds in the past 2 weeks, which is pretty good. My goal is to be 220 by March 1.

I just went through & adjusted my weights for this month in my spreadsheet & switched the assistance up a bit. Adding in Barbell Hip Thrusts on squat day. For weighted chins I'm continuing a linear progression with a few sets of heavy singles on Monday and a 5x5 of lighter weight on Thursday, increasing by 5 pounds each week until I stall. When I stall, I'll either re-set & continue linear progression, or switch to a Matt Rhodes style 5/3/1 progression.

For March, I'm going to start introducing some cardio back into the program, and probably start trimming the diet a bit to prepare for the conditioning & dieting extravaganza I have planned for April/May/June :-)

In July, I'm planning to start the Juggernaut Training Method, which is essentially 5/3/1 with rep tapering month to month (10,8,5,3).

Little more detail as I'm trying to plan everything out in my head here....

I'd like to finish the last 4 months of the year on the Juggernaut Method, peaking in December to set some nice PR's. So I'm sort of planning in reverse from there.

I'm currently lifting 4 days a week, and I plan to continue that through Feb & March. In April, when I start the diet & conditioning phase, I'll either be dropping to 3 days a week with 5/3/1 or doing a Westside split for April/May/June, since I'm getting my diet & conditioning guidance from Dave Tate's "Strong(er) Phase 3".

Not sure about July & Aug yet, but will be back to 4 days a week by September. I think I may want to schedule the training so that I can lift 2 days a week for the last 2 weeks of the year & focus on some big PR's.

Needless to say, September->December will be eating months, not dieting months :-)

BJJ - 1.5 Hours Gi

I'm starting to really like logging the grappling workouts, because it forces me to think about what we did...

Anyway...today we worked on an inside trip where I have judo grips & as my opponent steps forward with his right foot, I reach across with my right foot sort of hook the let while tugging down on the grips. Also worked on a new guard pass. This one is going to require some work, but I think I like it. Basically you get one knee through to the ground on the same side, then post the other leg really wide. I under hook the opposite side of the knee that is through and apply shoulder pressure to turn the opponent's head with the other arm. I can then swing my posted leg back to the other side & move my underhook to control the hips while bringing the knee all the way though to side control.

Did guard pass drills from open guard...my open guard sucks. Then we sparred. First 6 minutes I got a big 3-stripe blue who is bigger than me, stronger than me & more advanced than me. Was a good learning experience. I need to keep my hips DOWN and apply pressure when rolling with guys who are strong.

Second round I got Bruno. He's one of the black belt instructors. Guy tapped me 3 times in 6 minutes. But I learned some stuff. KEEP YOUR ELBOWS IN!!

Third round I rolled with a blue belt I haven't rolled with before. I think we're probably in the same weight class or close. I pulled guard, but couldn't sweep him - played guard for a long time - he finally passed to half guard & I was able to sweep from there. I worked and progressed to side control & then mount. I started going for a collar choke from mount & he tapped. Said he was exhausted & getting claustrophobic. He was a fcool guy, but I was a little bummed because I wanted to see if I could keep from getting swept when putting the 2nd hand in on the collar choke.

Anyway, back home now & I'm starving. So I pull a frozen pizza out of the fridge & when I open it, I realize its veggie?!?!?! WTF??? Who buys a fucking VEGGIE pizza??? Pissed.

So I managed to train jiu-jitsu 15 times in January, which is great. If I can keep that pace up, I'll eventually start improving, right?

On another note, I am baffled by my inability to gain weight. I think when I lift & train BJJ in the same day I am seriously burning a lot of calories. This morning I weighed 215.4, which is down from yesterday (215.8). Here's what I ate yesterday:

1/31/2011

BW: 215.8

7:00 AM - 2 fried eggs with toast
10:00 AM - small bag of pretzels
11:00 AM - 1.5 scoops protein + 16oz milk
12:00 PM - sandwich w ham, turkey, lettuce, tomato, cheese, mayo, mustard. 1 pickle, handfull of chips, handfull of M&M's
3:00 PM - peanut butter & honey sandwich
5:30 PM - plate of shrimp, rice pilaf, broccoli, portobella mushroom
9:00 PM - 1 scoop protein + 12 oz milk
9:30 PM - 1 whole Digiornio's veggie pizza. Fucking pizzed that my wife bought a veggie pizza  1 beer

Can't believe I finished the day at 9:30pm with a whole pizza a glass of milk & a beer and somehow lost weight...

1.5 Hours BJJ - Gi

Worked on inside hook takedown, then transition to ankle pick. Worked on passing spider guard. Learned 2 passes, 1 where you step on the leg to break the grip, then pass to the other side. the other one you push forward with your hips & sort of smash the guy, sitting on his hips to pass.

Rolled 3 rounds, first was against another blue belt, tall guy. We started standing, I got the takedown to side control, mounted & finished with an armbar. We restarted, I got the takedown to sidemount and mounted again then time ran out. Second round was against a brown belt Lacierda. I got the takedown (double-leg), which surprised the hell out of me, but I was not able to pass his guard - he eventually swept me, passed & got an armbar. 3rd round was against a really good blue belt. He pulled guard - I really have trouble with his guard - we worked there for a few minutes, bu eventually swept me to mount. I was having some problems with my shoulder yesterday, and he forced it above my head from mount & I tapped. My shoulder is screwed up from volleball, shotput & discuss for years & sometimes it flares up & I can't lift it above my head. We reset, I pulled guard & we worked from there until time ran out.

Iced my shoulder when I got home, hopefully I can still lift & go to BJJ tomorrow.
