My ADD Training Log 2016

Cool, dude. I'll try to get this ball rolling again after I hit some PRs. I love the spirit of competition, and I'm pretty sure other guys do too.

Btw, I just found out Gold's Gym in Huntington Beach folded some time ago. Where do you train now?

Yep. Gold's HB was bought by the YMCA. Same building, people & equipment. I train there when I lift. I sold most of my home gym equipment, but eventually I'd like to rebuild the home gym.

BJJ - 2 Hours

2 Hours Advanced class tonight. First hour was spent on passing lasso guard, either with an inside or outside leg drag, depending on how the guard player reacts. After that had some really tough sparring. Not sure how many rounds we did, but several 6 minute rounds, followed by a 15 minute round & an 11 minute round. I did a good job of not quitting when things got tough lol. Really glad I made it tonight.

Bike ride to the beach for 2.5 hours of beach volleyball. Solid workout, pushed the pace on the bike. we've moved our volleyball group to a net a little farther up the beach, so now it's 4.8 miles one way.

Bike stats to the beach (headwind + hangover): 4.83 miles in 24:11, avg speed 13.2 mph, max 22.7 mph

Bike Stats back home (tailwind + feeling better): 4.86 miles in 19:41, avg speed 14.8 mph, max 25.7 mph

There's also 9 stoplights on my route to the beach, so the time & average speed depend on how long I have to sit at red lights.

BJJ - 1.5 Hours

Felt like Monday today, 1 hour beginners class, focusing on cross collar choke from mount. Lots of specific training from mount, then 30 minutes sparring.

BJJ - 1.5 Hours

Worked an outside trip takedown from double-overhooks, then continued working on mount control. 30 minutes of sparring went pretty well. Really wish I had made it Tuesday night as well. Work has been picking up a lot, so I've been tired. I'm logging this at 6am Thursday morning, getting ready to fly to Phoenix for the day, so no training tonight either.

Get out of the cty in Phoenix. I hear theres some really nice elavation style hiking there

Yeah there's great hiking in Phoenix, but I've never had a chance to do any of it. It's a 45-minute flight from Orange County, CA, so when I work in Phoenix it's usually just a day trip for me.

BJJ - 1 Hour

1 Hour of sparring this morning. Felt good, looking forward to it & then just sucked & got my ass kicked for an hour lol. I rolled a couple of black belts (just got mauled by Prof. Gordo - yes THAT Gordo) and with a young athletic white belt.....but it turns out he has been training nogi for a while and has already had a couple of pro MMA fights. At some point I need to realize that I train at a world-class MMA gym. Just because someone is wearing a white belt, it doesn't necessarily mean shit. And I tweaked my knee during training today - doesn't seem like it's too bad, hopefully it feels good enough tomorrow for me to either go to BJJ or beach volleyball.

Theres such a difference in caliber between your everyday bjj player and those rarified world class guys. The movement is either too fast to even know whats happening or painstakingly slow and crushing but theres nothing you can do.

Biked to the beach & played 2.5 hours of beach volleyball. Didn't feel great, shoulders were pretty stiff the whole time, but at least I got some good exercise in.

BJJ - 1 Hour

Played hooky form work & went to the 10am class today. We had 5 black belts, 2 browns, 1 purple (me), 3 blue belts and 2 white belts I think. Tough, top-heavy session. we just sparred 6 minute rounds for an hour, my open guard needs a ton of work.

BJJ - 1.5 Hours

Advanced class - worked on shin-to-shin guard. Seemed kind of ok to me - I picked the sweeps up pretty quickly and was then able to execute them against a white belt in sparring. So.. not bad. My knee, however, was hurting the entire class. It feels like a strain in the muscle or tendon near the teardrop part of the quad. Evidently it only hurts with jiujitsu. So that sucks. I think I'll go light this week with the jiujitsu & see how it feels.

Biked to the beach & played volleyball for 2.5 hours. Good stuff, biked home then packed for Hawaii & went to a friends house to watch the UFC. Unreal finishes in the 2 main events!

In Hawaii this week, here are a couple of pictures from Sunday & Monday:

Great view of Waikiki on our flight in:

Misc. Assistance stuff + 15 minutes on treadmill. After the 5-hour flight last night & then daylight savings time, I really felt like crap today. Everything hurt - knee, shoulder, wrist, etc.... Hoping to get more consistent in the weight room to augment the BJJ.

BJJ - 1.5 Hours

Didn't make it during the day today, so went to the beginners class in the evening. There were some good guys there, and a couple of people preparing for Pans, so still got some competitive rolls in. Jacked my elbow up horsing around at home yesterday, but it did ok rolling.

Made it to the morning class today. Worked on a triangle & omoplata setup from foot on the hips guard. Was able to pull the omoplata off in live rolling.

Turned 44 today & celebrated by biking to the gym & getting in an hour of sparring. Will be celebrating with approximately 44 beers in downtown HB tomorrow for St. Paddy's day.
