BJJ - 1 Hour

Forgot to mention earlier that this month is 7 years from when I started jiujitsu. So I guess I'm no prodigy, but I'm pleased that I've stuck with it. I don't think I've stuck with anything for 7 years before. Except my wife. And that was more her sticking with me lol.

Anyway, another day of 100% sparring. 8x 5 minute rounds. Rolled with a variety of belts, tried to work open guard, guard recovery, side control escapes. Made small small improvements I think. Still got smashed a bunch. Picked up some open guard tips as well.

BJJ - 2 Hours gi & nogi

Worked some nice details on the longstep pass today in gi. Need to keep drilling it. Also picked up some good details on my DLR guard. I've been setting my hook with my knee pointed out, which isn't as strong. If I set the hook & then pinch my knee in it helps keep my opponent off balance when I push the far leg. good stuff.

Nogi we drilled some passes, lots of repetitions. Then sparred 2x 5 minute rounds. I need to do a better job defending footlocks...

On a positive note, I did a good job defending side control EARLY. sitting up before position is established & recovering guard or sweeping.

I've been REALLY fortunate work has been light this month & I've been able to train almost every day. Need to continue to take advantage while I can.

BJJ - 1 Hour gi

Another hour of straight sparring. 8 x 5 minute rounds. Felt a little slow & beat down today. I did get to roll with Benniel Dariush (UFC Fighter) today. His jiujitsu is slick. Looking forward to UFC fights tonight & tomorrow, then flying to the east coast Sunday.

Solid bjj'ing. Playing with world class athletes can be humbling. How do you as a recreational player feel during those sessions.

No, but seriously, great job.
But actually, no, really. Get it together.

Good question - basically I don't feel like I'm offering much. When I roll with pro fighters who are jiu-jitsu beginners it's different. You know they are going to bring the pace & they won't quit or give up any positions, but I can deal with them. The pros who also have good jiujitsu are just smashing me easily. Any mistake is immediately capitalized on.

Biked to the beach & played 2 hours of sand volleyball. Felt great, I think all the jiujitsu has been good for my conditioning.

BJJ - 1.5 Hours gi @ GB Charlotte

Traveling for work, but had time to train tonight in Charlotte, NC. Got in a solid 1.5 hours, and figured out something I need to drill when I get back. When I set up or pull open guard, I'm not establishing my bottom foot first. I need to do this to keep distance. Bottom foot on the hip or somewhere. I was getting caught establishing my top hook 1st, and then getting passed. Good thing to figure out. Thanks to brown belt Ray for pointing it out.

Pulling guard has always been a no no in my world. But the of being on bottom in 20# of gear doesnt sit right with me for work. So my first coach(olympic level judoka) made sure i fought every take down to thr death. Having a set of knees developed from Mauy Thai is a real tool and doesnt look so bad on video in court. Luckily even in the half assed condition im in now im still bigger stronger faster than people who dont train.

I found the same thing against the really incrediable athletes who were nee but was rag dolled by the true bjj guys who were in the gym daily. I finally decided to focus on being the best training partner i could which in turn let me learn how to mimic attacks and pacing of upcoming oppentants like i did in boxing where i was always more in demand in the gym than the ring. Im ambidextrous and long so as a sparing oppentant for boxing there was always a market.

My log is back!

Thanks for the comments Midmo. I'm definitely a better top player, which is why I'm working from the bottom. I had an opportunity to do exactly what you said with a guy on Monday. One of our fighters had his 2nd pro fight this past weekend. He's a world champion kickboxer, but fought a wrestler & just got taken down & controlled in all 3 rounds. I worked with him on Monday on getting back to his feet.

BJJ Update - While the logs were unavailable, I trained on 12/16, 12/17, & 12/21. 1 Hour each time.

12/26/2015

Biked to the beach & played volleyball for 2-3 hours. It was really cold (for us) this weekend, temp was about 65 degrees & breezy.

Yeah, looks freezing calvus, how do you cope?!
It was tough but long sleeves & a beanie hat helped get me through it. After volleyball went to Main Street & sat on the patio in the sun & had margaritas :)

BJJ - 1 Hour Sparring

Good rolls tonight. All upper belts & a big purple & big blue belt. Rolled twice with one of our new black belts. Overall I improved in some small things I'm trying to do better. Grip fighting improved, defended a couple of leg lock attempts, had fun :)

1.5 Hours Jiujitsu

Got some nice rolls in, got some half-guard pointers from some black belts. Probably the last day I'll be able to train this year - but it was a good day. Contemplating a tournament in January, but it's the same day as a friends 50th birthday, so not sure. See you guys next year!

Solid mat work. Does your school put an emphasis on grip strength and training. I remeber all sorts of finger tip pushups, gi pulllups and just dragging fools around the mats. My grip is thankfully on of my advantages most of the time in the gi.

No we really don't do anything special for grip.
